Mehlman's Blog Call

At 2:30 p.m., RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman hosts a conference call today with conservative bloggers to talk about the Miers' nomination. And he'll take their questions. This is a sign that the RNC is taking the blogosphere more seriously. And look for other, subtle changes to the party's web strategy in the days to come.

The base is feeling sold out on this pick for numerous reasons. They got a nominee who doesn't have impeccable credentials and has no clearly defined ideological philosophy. We did not deliver the house, the senate, and the white house to the Republicans to receive an underqualified, stealth candidate whose main claim to fame is being friends of the President. Finally, when we have voiced our concerns, we have been dismissed as sexist and elitest which couldn't be further from the truth. Give the base a Karen Williams, an Emilio Garza, or a Michael Luttig and the base will rally around you. But give us someone like Miers and that base will fracture for at least the short term future and the Republican gains of the last 15 years will dissipate before your eyes.

Oh calm down. If we trusted President Bush enough to elect him, then we should trust him enough to nominate a proper person to the Supreme Court. Given the presence of a number of weak-kneed "republicans" from the northeast and the treacherous Senator McCain in the Senate, one can see why President Bush would rather not risk an all out battle at this point. I rather suspect he has a point. What we need to do is to back the President and work to both reduce the Democratic congressional infestation and firm up the Republican Congressional Delegation in 2006 and 2008. President Bush is not a magician. Let's give him the majority he needs in congress. Then we will not face this situation again.
