The VA Miracle?
Chatting with Gov. Mark Warner (D) following a Kaine for Governor rally on Friday in Warner's hometown of Alexandria, we could not resist hitting him with an '08 question or two. Perhaps leading the witness, we asked the gov if he would feel more comfortable being open about his nat'l ambitions after his successor is chosen on Tuesday.
Warner deftly batted that one aside, saying that he had a "job until January 14th" and that he would keep his focus until then on Richmond. Asked, then, if it was safe to assume that we would not see Warner in other capitals -- say, Des Monies or Concord -- between Tuesday and January 14th, he said nothing yet everything with a wide grin and a long, 'you're not getting me to go there' stare.
For the record, Warner was introduced at the rally to raucous applause and scattered chants of "4 More Years." And after saying wistfully that he wished he had a 2nd term and ticking off the accomplishments in the one he had, (also to applause) Warner previewed his message for those folks he may or may not see in IA and NH in the months to come. Sounding an outside-the-beltway note, he boasted that "at least on this side of the river, people in both parties" had come together to put VA first.
We can already see the ad now: "The Virginia Miracle." [JONATHAN MARTIN]

I just can't see Warner getting the nomination in 2008. He just doesn't have "it" (whatever the heck that is, but we all know it when we see it in a candidate).
But, golly, wouldn't he look just great running for the Senate in 2006?!?

Just back from the Kaine-Byrne-Deeds rally in Alexandria--Warner was acvtually quite brilliant in how obvious he made his presidential ambitions while still keeping the attention on Tim Kaine.

Warner is EXACTLY what the party needs in 2008, as a foil to Senator Clinton. He's smart, has a business background, is appealing to moderates/independents/Republicans disaffected by the current governing Right Wing cabal, and he's 100% genuine and honest.

My thoughts exactly, I have been eyeing a Warner-Clark ticket for some time. Great combo of business skill, governmental experience, and foreign policy experience. Both southern, both brilliant men. In my opinion, a "slam dunk" for the 2008 ticket!!

That's right; Warner doesn't have 'it'. Kind of like a local news anchor vs. the polished cable news types. In today's national politics, you have to be shinny and animated to get anywhere...blame it on TV.

Watched Gov Warner on C-Span yesterday and I was impressed. Being a Westerner though I'm holding out for Gov Schwietzer

Here is a tip - anytime a
'Dem Strategist' tells you someone is 100% anything do not believe them, ever, under any circumstances, regradless of the person they are speaking about.
Warner-Clark isn't going to happen but there is room for you on the Gore-Inouye/Salazar/Feingold/Obama wagon.

I completely agree on Warner-Clark. And I think Warner has IT all over the place.
I'd prefer Russ Feingold but I don't see that happening and I also see the Warner-Clark ticket as the most electable ticket EITHER party could put together. Who could the Republicans put forward that would beat them?

Well, you have the ticket upside down. Clark/Warner would be a great ticket and would win.

I was very impressed with your writing ability and professional slant on politics. Keep up the good word!!
