Bass And Flake Not Pleased

The Hotline has obtained a letter that moderate Rep. Charlie Bass (NH) and conservative Rep. Jeff Flake (AZ) will shortly send to GOP colleagues urging them to -- in the name of extracting reform commitments from the two candidates -- keep their powder dry in the nascent Maj Leader race.

Flake/Bass: "Elections that appear to be foregone conclusions do not advance the reformist agenda many of us pledged to uphold to our constituents."

The unlikely couple, of course, teamed up on Friday to lead the coalition of members urging DeLay to give up his claim as Maj Leader.

Full letter after the jump:

January 9, 2006

Dear Republican Colleague,

We urge you to consider the option of keeping your support for any of the open Leadership positions unannounced so that we might allow a full debate to occur over the future operation of our Conference.

Elections that appear to be foregone conclusions do not advance the reformist agenda many of us pledged to uphold to our constituents. Many of us have made public comments in support of:

Ø eliminating or severely reducing the use of earmarking and "emergency spending" designations in our appropriations bills;

Ø formalizing the duration of time votes are held open and legislation is available for review before floor action is taken; and

Ø disallowing the routine waiving of the rules against spending points of order.

Thus far, no candidate has appropriately addressed these and other much needed operational issues of the House of Representatives. We intend to ask the candidates to speak to them and urge you to join us.

Please contact xxxxx or xxxx for more information on changing the status quo or to more formally join the call for a reformist agenda for the balance of the 109th Congress.

Sincerely,

Charles F. Bass Jeff Flake

Reformist = libertarian?

Keeping one's own counsel until the play of the field shows itself seems as much to be common sense as libertarian. Stopping the practive of using taxpayer funds to buy support and loyalty can only be good government of the highest order. Is this for real?
