BREAKING NEWS: HOUSE GOPERS CALL FOR ELECTIONS
The Hotline has learned from three House sources that at least two-dozen House GOPers spanning the ideological spectrum have agreed to sign a letter to House Conference Chair Deborah Pryce (R-OH) requesting new leadership elections in an effort to block Rep. Tom DeLay from reclaiming his post as Maj Leader. A group of members and staffers held a conference call earlier today and plan to hold a second one later in the afternoon as they seek to obtain the required 50 signatures to force the vote.
The sources confirm that the effort to build the list is being led by conservative Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and moderate Rep. Charles Bass (R-NH). Flake has been tasked with lobbying his fellow conservative colleagues, while Bass is in charge of corralling other Tuesday Group moderates.
This is the first sign of what has been, since the Abramoff plea, a quickly-growing, behind-the-scenes effort to ensure that DeLay does not return to the top of the House GOP. [JONATHAN MARTIN]

I am a conservative and think that until Delay's legal problems--founded or not--are resolved, he should not hold a leadership post. it's simply a matter of propriety, something that, while the GOP constantly claims it stands for, GOP leaders have a rather difficult time following. I also think this is an early move to ensure the GOP holds onto the House and Senate--it might be interpreted as a desperate move, but it's too early for it to be considered as such.

Interesting Times! I read yesterday that up to 300 Senators and Representatives from BOTH parties will face serious questions and many indictments. We will just have to wait and see.
Demon Leader Harry Reid is also very prominent on the Bribe List. (As is former Minority Leader Tom Dascle). Pelosi .... who knows? So, the Republicans have problems, but the Demons do also.

I am all for DeLay retaining his leadership post. He IS the face of the modern-day GOP, and therefore, should be their titular cynosure.

The thing I, and independent voter, find stunning is not that "new leadership" elections are being called for, but rather that ANYONE, and that includes DeLay, would think his potential reinstatement is even worth discussion.
Those of us with a grasp of reality and with egos smaller than the planet kind of understand that "s--t happens" from time to time, and then you face it and move along to whatever the next chapter of your life can/should become, for the good of all concerned.
I guess that doesn't apply if you happen to be the one and only person who could possibly do what you had been doing before you were so rudely interrupted, but .....

I think unless you are charged with a crime, you should keep your position. In Delay's case, if it turns out (as much as it looks) that the prosecutor is indeed misusing his position...then Delay, who did get things done as opposed to many spineless repubs, stepped down for nothing.

It's really kind of sad to watch some Republicans still lamely trying to peddle the "Democrats took bribes too" baloney. The facts just don't back it up. They'd like to think no one can see the difference between those who took donations, and those who performed official acts in exchange for bribes.
Try as they might, these wingnuts just can't seem to condemn the crooks in their own party without bawling "He did it too" like a 5-year-old, even when they have to completely make up stories just to try to make themselves feel better.
They just don't seem to realise that it's a tacit acknowledgement of the guilt of their GOP leadership, as well as a transparent dodge. We sure don't hear much bragging anymore about their totally brilliant GOP flagship product, the K Street Project.
I predict the same wankers will be sobbing and throwing red-faced tantrums like spanked toddlers when the court gets done adjudicating the crimes of Ney, Frist, Delay, Libby, Rove, and the rest of the criminal conspiracy. Those expletives deserve every year of hard time they get for selling their public office like cheap hookers.

Delay is rotten to the core and he is going down. Maybe he needs to start praying harder. Beyond old Tommy Boy, Abramoff is in bed with so many Republicans that the sorry attempts that are being made to drag Democrats into this mess are falling flat. I also love the attempts that The Wall Street Journal is making at just shoving this "little" scandal under the rug.....hypocrisy abounds!

They will never, ever get rid of DeLay until and unless they have the courage to make Hastert step down. They are close friends and he has shown he will do near anything (including shutting down the whole House for a month and gutting the ethics ctee) to back his buddy. His national approval is like 22% - he's been strong-arming votes in his own party by threats, midnight votes and suspending the rules. NEVER have we seen so much pork.
He will continue to drag the party down into pay-to-play porkville, along with DeLay, until the rest of the House GOP have the courage to stand up to him. DeLay, Hastert and Frist HAVE to go.

Tom DeLay has been an incredibly effective leader in the House, but the Dems have used our own caucus rules (theirs are not the same) to tar him with the appearance of potential impropriety. Given the "culture of corruption" campaign mantra being chanted by the Dems and echoed in the media, DeLay's most effective leadership move at this point would be to quickly signal support for a new leader - and then to beat Ronnie Earle like drum in court!
