Cheney Expects To Be Warned By Texas

Some updates:

1. The USSS contacted local law enforcement officials on Saturday night; on Sunday morning, they interviewed Cheney and concluded that the shooting was accidental. Case closed. No word on why they did not respond Saturday night.

2. Cheney lacked the requisite stamp to hunt upland game bird; he expects to be fined $7 by Texas officials. (See the VP's office release below.) BTW: how weird is that the FIRST release by the VP's office is a terse bureaucratic acknowledgement of a game warning, and not a statement of sympathy for the victim? Or maybe we just don't get the VP....

3. It's still unclear why it took three hours for senior WH officials to be notified about the basic narrative. And why WH press sec. Scott McClellan was not fully informed until 6:00 am Sunday.

It has been brought to the Vice President's attention by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department this afternoon that, although he had acquired a 125 dollar Texas non-resident season hunting license, he lacked a 7 dollar stamp for hunting upland game birds. To address any questions about the licensing:

-- A member of the Vice President's staff wrote a check for 140 dollars understanding that this would purchase a Texas non-resident season hunting license that would permit the Vice President to hunt quail in Texas. It appears now that the license itself cost 125 dollars, and an extra 15 dollars covered the cost of a Federal migratory bird stamp. The Vice President did not need the Federal stamp, as he already possessed one.

-- The staff asked for all permits needed, but was not informed of the 7 dollar upland game bird stamp requirement.

-- Because the requirement is new, the Department has informed us that it is issuing warnings, and the Vice President expects to receive one. He will take whatever steps are needed to comply with applicable rules.

-- In the meantime, the Vice President has sent a 7 dollar check to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which is the cost of an upland game bird stamp.

You know, in Mississippi such an accident triggers a requirement that the shooter take a 'breathalizer' test automatically. i wonder if texas has a similar law and if it was administered. more to the point, it would be moot by sunday morning.

I worry about people that actually "get" the vp

Why is it that he would be fined only the cost of the stamp? That's not a fine. I was once caught fishing on an expired license and was fined more than seven times the cost of a new license and still had to buy a license to boot.

Is there a stamp for old men also?

Please help. Who was the dimwitted dingbat in the White House press corps who pleaded on Monday, February 13, 2006, with Scott McClellan to ask for the resignatation of Dick Cheney? Evidently, her first name is Connie. What is her last name and what kook outfit employs her? Thank you.
