Biden Say What?

A Biden Moment, as it were.

In thanking a young Indian-American man for the support of his Indian-American group, Sen. Biden touts how Indians are the fastest growing immigrant group in Delaware and says, "You CANNOT go into a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts without an Indian accent."

That poor young man.

This is just a "mouth drop open" moment. I watched that and was floored.

An idiot from the tiny state

Between Joe Biden and George Allen, you get the impression that it's open season on brown folk these days.

Vijay

P.S. I have never refered to my haircut as a "Macaca" and prefer Starbucks to Dunkin Donuts.

i'm from the tiny state, and i have to say he's right.

might not be tasteful, but it's right.

Yes bob,
you and all of us who do not know indian accent, will have to know now. AS BBC said, Hinglish will be the language of the world. If you fail to learn, you will be thrown into the dark edge, therefore start learning right now.

if americain born people would work in dunkin donuts they could, indians are the only ones who will do that difficult job,

I am from DE and know Joe. Yes, this was an awkward comment from a highly intelligent man trying to relate to someone he just met off the cuff (albeit unsuccessfully). Not defending, just saying, any one of us can have a stupid attack at a bad time. Have you ever said something that sounded good at the time but then reflected and said to yourself..."well, that didn't sound right. I hope that came out ok to him/her."? I know I have.

Biden has an inordinate number of foot in mouth episodes under his belt, Jeremiah. At some point you have to wonder if what he says actually reflects his attitudes about people of color and his stereotypes. I would also like to point out that intelligence doesn't mean he's not prejudiced and, dare I say it, an ass?

Exactly Heather, had a conservative said that or any of his other "oops" comments, they'd be out yesterday. But no, re-election is the inevitable.

I'm an Indian American from New York working for one of the top tier management consulting firms. I have been a Biden supporter for a long time and believe his foreign relations experience is the most significant amongst the other Democratic candidates. I agreed with his Federalized Iraq plan, his recent nay vote on labelling the Iranian guard as a terrorist group and most everything he's got to say when it comes to foreign policy. I've given money to his campaign. However, these recent comments completely blind-sided me. It's not that I think people can't make mistakes...but how does the Chariman of the Foreign Relations Committee make those remarks? He is suppossed to be a statesman...the best of the best. People have even thought (myself included) that he'd be a great candidate for Secretary of State in a Democratic administration. With all the experience he has, and all the work he has done for civil rights, minorities, etc., - how can he make such a remark - even if he "meant well"? Regardless of whether indians are coming into Deleware and working at all the Dunkin Donuts and 711s...it's a stereotype none the less. These comments were especially disapointing to me and as great as a candidate I think Senator Biden is - he's unfortunately lost my vote. I wish I could get my $50 dollars back.

OBAMA is a great person, BIDEN is STUPID, he lost my vote because of his comments. BIDEN, if you are a MAN don't go to 7-11 or Dunkin Donut.

Apar | 08.24.08 11:32 AM

Biden also said in the same short conversation, that 30% of the CEO's in the Silicon Valley are Indian-Americans. Is that a stereotype too, or is it just a statement of fact? There is nothing wrong with working in or owning a franchise of 7-11's or Dunkin donuts. Isn't that the American dream, to work hard and achieve something for yourself and your family. Seems like a success story to me, nothing to be offended about.

Ezsuds | 08.26.08 06:22 PM

BIDEN is STUPID that was a stupid remark. It is not some average Joe making a comment in a cheap bar. This is our Vice President candidate. He should know you could not run into any hospital without running into Indian Doctors who are also Chiefs of Departments.
All top positions in America you will see Indians, all top colleges have a higher percent of Indian kids.
Not just 7/11 and Dunkin donuts, it is far better than being un-employed or be a toll on the system.
If he is smart he should apologize to the entire community, he should have consulted former President Clinton
