Long Weekend Special: Justifying HRC, and Mfume Leads

Mark Penn and James Carville write in the pages of the Washington Post a short essay that aims to reassure a restless Democratic establishment that, yes, Sen. Hillary Clinton CAN win the 2008 election if she chooses to run.

Their answer: she's tough. Also: she's a woman. She can attract swing voters. And she's a leader.

And a new Post poll shows that Kweisi Mfume leads Rep. Ben Cardin in a test of registered voters ahead of the MD Senate Dem primary, although a plurality -- 32 percent -- are undecided. Both candidates outpoll Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R), though Cardin's margin is stronger because Steele gets more white voters if Mfume is the Dem nominee.

Once again, Joe Biden "is in."
