The Big Number: 15

Two polls diverged in a yellow wood...

But we're happy we can travel both.

Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) trails Dover Law Dir. Zack Space (D) by 11 points. No, he leads by 4. Those are the dueling claims made by polls release yesterday and today by pollsters working for each candidate.

Dem firm Cooper & Secrest Assoc., in a poll for Space, shows the political neophyte up 46%-35%, while Public Opinion Strategies, a GOP firm working for Ney, has the embattled Rep. leading, 45%-41%. The margin by which Ney leads or trails swings a full 15 points between the two.

In a district that voted for Pres. Bush by 14 points, an incumbent only leading by 4 -- if we take the GOP poll, the best available situation for Ney, at its word -- is in trouble. No one disputes that Ney is that incumbent. But it's always fun to point out when two polls diverge so much. [REID WILSON]
