Lieberman Concedes; Predicts Win As Indy In November
"Thank you dear friends for standing by me in this difficult race."
"Your support has sustained my family and me and made this a much closer race than all the pundits were predicting."
"I called Ned Lamont and congratulated him on his success today."
"We've just finished the first half and the Lamont Team is ahead. In the second half, our team, Team Connecticut, is going to surge forward in November."
"The old politics of polarization won today. For the sake of our state, my country and my party, I cannot and will not let those results stands today."
"I will continue to offer Connecticut a different path forward."
"People are fed up with the petty partisanship and angry bickering in Washington. It is continually blocking progress on major problems and wasting America's greatness."
"I'll never hesitate to work with members of the other party if it helps to acheive solutions to build better life for people of Connecticut. I will always do what I believe is right for my state and country regardless of what the political consequences may be."
Tomorrow is a brand new day. [I'll run a] new campaign to unite people of Connecticut, GOP, Democrat and independent, and move forward together and solve our most serious problems together."

not as an "indy", but as an "independent democrat" - what a selfish loser.
No prominent democrat will stand by him - and they shouldn't.
lieberass | 08.08.06 11:11 PM
What a $%&*# traitor!!! Why doesn't he sit down and shut up or, failing that, give GWB a BJ so we, the adults, can have grounds to impeach both of them.
Bubba | 08.08.06 11:16 PM
I am a Republican and I will vote for you Joe!
Tim McGee | 08.08.06 11:22 PM
Done, Joe. D-O-N-E. You're dead. Please sit down.
Clamstrip Jimmy | 08.08.06 11:26 PM
Nice to see Lieberman is a true Democrat... wait, did he say he was going to run as an Independent? I see, he doesn't care about the party at all, which explains his performance in 2000.
Sean | 08.08.06 11:26 PM
I just hope the Independents in Connecticut will see through Liebermans pandering to them.
Robert | 08.08.06 11:28 PM
Oh come on Joe. There's a difference between consensus politics and being a Republican lapdog. Today, the real democrat won.
Out Stater | 08.08.06 11:33 PM
Democrats must tell the former senator - You get no money, no help, no fall back, no future. Run as an independent and you will never sit on the board of _______. He lost and he needs to help the party retake the senate.
jerry | 08.08.06 11:36 PM
What a pompus bag of wind. It would be better if he crawled back under the rock he came from.
Robert | 08.08.06 11:40 PM
What a wanker!
AGS | 08.08.06 11:44 PM
Lieberman ran on the basis that he would be the best DEMOCRATIC candidate.
Losing the nomination, he now plans to run outside the party instead of doing the decent thing--the thing he would have expected his opponent to do: support the party's duly nominated candidate.
So much for loyalty.
Looks like Connecticut made a good choice tonight!
Linda E | 08.08.06 11:44 PM
Please, Joe. Don't embaress yourself further. You aren't wanted anymore -except by your repub party who can fix your election in November. But if not, let's face it, Ashcroft lost to a deceased candidate and got AG! Maybe you'll get something good too!

Joe Lieberman: What a Jackass!
Mark Cohen | 08.08.06 11:45 PM

Joe Lieberman: What a Jackass!
Mark Cohen | 08.08.06 11:46 PM
What Lieberman would never concede is that the Iraq invasion was never necessary to protect the US from harm. Bush declared that the war was over 3 years ago ... In his speech from the aircraft carrier, wearing garb of servicemen he has sent to their deaths since then.
In World War II the survival of America was at stake. The occupation of Iraq is by choice. Iraq was never a threat to America. By blindly obeying the administration and its blatant propaganda campaign to mislead the World, Lieberman proved he could not be trusted by mainstream Americans who by now know the administration lied about reasons for invading.
Robert | 08.08.06 11:47 PM
Joe, you are a Bush enabler. Democrats don't need or want a Bush-lite suck-up. You are supposed to be part of the opposition party.
You like the Bush Cronies so much you want to give them a parting gift of another Republican seat in the Senate by running as an "Independent".
It's about time to show that you actually are a Democrat by letting the democratically elected Democratic nominee run without your self-motivated independent campaign.
Please leave. We don't want Bush enablers in the Democratic Party anymore.
AP | 08.08.06 11:50 PM
I wonder who this fool Joe Lieberman is going to blame when his cheap server goes down in Nov.
Craig | 08.08.06 11:51 PM
Did you notice how bitter Joe Lieberman sounded tonight? His anger towards his fellow Democrats is boggling.
Mellissa | 08.08.06 11:51 PM
"So much for loyalty."
"His anger towards his fellow Democrats is boggling."
That might be true if it weren't for the lack of loytalty that's been shown him for the past several years. Here is a man who was a nominee for VP. His running mate endorsed someone else over him in 2004 without informing him before running to the press. Then, a group of far-left bums with nothing better to do than sit around in sweats at a computer all day launch vicious attacks against him, often personal, and launched a serious effort to have the party itself work against him. And over one issue! The left's claim, "Dissent is patriotic," is now a complete hypocrisy, and the good Senator from Connecticut was correct to point that out.
He is not the one who is being disloyal. His party left him long ago, and he is more than right to run as an independent.
And his anger is "boggling?" What did you expect? Cheering?
Jess | 08.09.06 01:36 AM
"I will continue to offer Connecticut a different path forward."
A DIFFERENT PATH FORWARD?????
He's the friggin INCUMBENT!!!!
Man, the stones on this guy are unbelievable.
Mac | 08.09.06 01:47 AM
V's for victory Joe and it was not yours tonight. Thanks for showing us tonight that it is still all about"U".
Cov | 08.09.06 02:02 AM
"For the sake of our state, my country and my party, I cannot and will not let those results stand today." Why didn't he do that in 2000?
Did he see Bush and Cheney stealing the Presidency as good for the country and the party?
Mark | 08.09.06 02:22 AM
Joe loves losing sooo much, he's just got to do it one last time, right? Joe is pretty much emblematic of everything that is wrong with the elites running today's Democratic party. The purge of the party has begun, and it couldn't have started with a better choice. The Fool on the Hill is about to lose his powerful position, and none too soon.
Duh | 08.09.06 02:59 AM
Let's face it, Lieberman was trending up big-time at the end of the primary. He nearly won an upset victory. And *plenty* of CT repubs will back him. As an independent, he'll win.
Jonathan | 08.09.06 03:05 AM
You don't understand it is my seat. I am the senator from CT. It is mine not some millionaire hippies, not those angry men with their intranets.
I get to be the senator until I become president.
You don't understand that I believe in my positions and therefore you can not question me or the president about said positions. It is not up to me to be in touch with your views on the Iraq War. It is up to you voters to support my positions no matter what. We are at war here and if I don't get reelected it means Israel will be destroyed and the terrorist win. Only I can prevent ARMAGEDDON
That is Senator Lieberman to you | 08.09.06 03:43 AM
This Fuc***head just won't learn. The rove-machine is trying to suck off votes (no pun intended) from legidimate candidates. Everyone I know has contacted him and said...Ifyou loose, give it up, be a TEAM PLAYER, not a sore looser.
kjlovell | 08.09.06 03:55 AM
Lieberman tried to get what he wanted through the established means of getting it and then, when he lost, he took steps outside of the system he implicitly endorsed by getting involved in that system's established processes. This is the same mentality that causes people to seize violently what they were too unpopular to seize democratically. I think the name "Sore Loserman" applies to ol' Joe once again.
takethemud | 08.09.06 04:12 AM
Let's see, partisan bickering is is preventing us from solving problems? How exactly has this bickering prevented the Republicans from passing anything they want to pass and opting out of any oversight of the executive branch?
You need to check your logic Joe. The thing blocking progress on major problems seems to be the Republicans getting everything they want. And what are you doing about that? Oh, right.
bruiser | 08.09.06 05:06 AM
Joe's still doing his part for Bush. Independent = spoiler.
Susan | 08.09.06 06:52 AM
But Joe's "working with" miserepublicans is being a collaborator with Constitutional criminals!
Victor Anderson | 08.09.06 07:04 AM
Joseph-it is time to step aside. "We The People" have spoken and you have not been chosen. Take the loss like a true magnanimous politician and go home now.
AmeriPat | 08.09.06 07:11 AM
Joe is a loserman: Voters across America wanted Joe to go for reasons that extend well beyond the margins of the Iraq War. Reporters and pundits, as well as Joe Lieberman, who still want to paint this story with one color are missing the real picture. The Democrats' distaste for this work of art was long in the making.
In 2000, Joe Lieberman sided with candidate Bush, over his running mate, Al Gore, insisting that illegal overseas ballots be counted in Florida, which by itself swung the White House to Bush. In 2001, when Enron's collapse exposed widespread industry abuse, all the fingers pointed to Bush and the Republican led Congress who had opened the door to corporate fraud through deregulation, and the appointment of industry lobbyists, such as Harvey Pitt, to manage oversight. Rather than work with Democrats, like Richard Gephardt (former House Minority Leader), who were focused on protecting American workers and investors, Joe Lieberman took the air out of the Democrats' tires by siding with Republicans intent on softening any new legislation. Joe chaired the committee that appointed "heck-of-a-job-Brownie" to head FEMA. FEMA's devastating response to Katrina is a direct result of this appointment.
From the floor of the Senate, Joe Lieberman attacked a sitting Democratic president for having an affair, yet stands in front of Bush as a shield, deflecting any criticism from those who seek oversight and accountability. Voting for the Iraq was not the kiss of death for this "pompous" senator, but rather his consistent defense of Bush's failed policies and practices. I ask, who is responsible; the wolves who devoir the body republic, or the gatekeeper, who holds open the door?
Go home Joe.
Nancy Ganz | 08.09.06 07:27 AM
Here is poor Joe, truly a "Sore Loserman! (With apologies to President All Gore).
How Lieberman could pander to Republicans after what they did to him in 2000 leaves me scratching my head.
Ann | 08.09.06 07:38 AM
Lieberman has no respect for the will of the voters: the voters wanted Gore/Lieberman for president/vp in 2000, and he let the two Texas oil men steal it. Now he gets voted out in the primary and he won't let THIS vote stand. What a hypocrite!
Lieberman ought to retire from government today and go work as a token "liberal" for the Fox Bullshit Channel.
D-Menace | 08.09.06 07:46 AM
Boo hoo Joe. Get a life! You predicted a primary win and you lost.
Now you are predicting "victory in November" as an Independent (!) and you will lose that too.
Are you such a pompous windbag that you care more about your career than the people of Connecticut----or the nation?
Who will fund your run? Not the Democrats---obviously. First you ask for the Party support and then you work to decapitate it. Nice.
Go get yourself a comfy seat as a Fox SNooze talking head where like them, you can continue to cushion yourself against reality.
And by the way, your "concession sleech" was utterly graceless and undignified. You are an embarrassment.
JG Murphy | 08.09.06 08:29 AM
"People are fed up with the petty partisanship and angry bickering in Washington. It is continually blocking progress on major problems and wasting America's greatness."
How ironic Lieberman parrots Bush/Cheney 2000 in his "concession speech". Even more ironic that he does not acknowlege that it is GOP control of all three branches of government that has thrown a wrench into the gears.
Jerome J Gannon | 08.09.06 08:44 AM
As you feel the intense deceleration of "Joementum", remember to kick yourself in the ass for sucking up to the chimp. At last a righteous result in an American election. "Goodbye Joe, you gotta go, me o myo"
Richard Wagner | 08.09.06 08:44 AM
Lieberman should be ashamed of himself. He aligned himself with Bush every chance he got. He should become a republican. He made choices that were not in the best interest of the American People. Remember the old saying: The reason incumbents keep running are, that they cannot live by the laws which they have enacted..
Richard Pesicka | 08.09.06 09:02 AM
Time to get out the tar and feathers!
Audrey | 08.09.06 09:08 AM
Joe -
You were the enabler for this atrocity in Iraq.
Your support of the Cheney/Bush/Rumsfeld plot was the key to its approval in Congress.
Therefore, you are responsible for over 100,000 deaths of innocent men, women, & children.
Go back to your hole and rot.
Sailor25 | 08.09.06 09:27 AM
Joementum's idea of a centrist is to be a Bush enabler. On every key issue he's sidded with the most corrupt, distructive administration in our history.
Lieberman represents the "Bush-wing of the Democratic Party".
We need REAL Democrats in the Democratic Party, not some Bush-lite wanna-be.
Get the message-- GET LOST!
Andrew P | 08.09.06 09:40 AM
I always thought Lieberman had an ulterior motive when he started to support Bush & his war. If he runs as an independent, he will get lots of laundered money from the Repulsicans. He will get votes from the Perot/Nader idots. He will not win, but could the Repub? Is W waving a carrot in front of the donkey with a possible Cabinet position?
MickeyG | 08.09.06 09:48 AM
In the immortal words of Ronald Reagan, the Democratic party left Joe Lieberman. I'll vote for him over Ned Lamont any day, if nothing more than to prove a point to the idiot Dems who want to get rid of a guy who votes with the party 90% of the time for a guy who has zero political experience (oops...I forgot his stint on the Board of Selectmen). If Lamont makes it to the Senate I guess I'll just wait until he stops the Earth from turning and brings the troops home from Iraq single handedly. Give me a break. Joe has a better shot at doing anything in the Senate than Lamont ever will. Way to go CT Democrats. You really are the dumbest bunch I've ever seen.
CWA | 08.09.06 09:56 AM
How embarassing! To be such a well-known and well-backed incumbent and to lose your own primary, very shameful.
What I find particularly tasty is that he didn't lose it because he had a scandalous affair or took bribes, etc - he lost because he was bad at the job he was hired to do.
Deadhorse | 08.09.06 10:09 AM
Slimey Joe, you're in complete denial (no not, "De Nile," that river in Egypt).
First you didn't do sh** to stop Dumbyass et al from stealing the 2000 election. You didn't speak out against the "Sore Loserman" label "Dick"-breath laid on you after the 2000 election.
You didn't hold press conferences that said Dumbyass' brother rigged the Florida vote or that Madam Butterfly illegally approved an invalid butterfly ballot in Palm Beach County. In short, you didn't do sh**.
Then, over the last 6 years you have had your nose all the way of Dumbyass rear orifice so that us Democrats can't tell where Bush's rear-end ends and your face begins. You supported eliminatimg Social Security. You voted for the USA Patriot Act. You authorized Dumbyass' attack on Iraq.
Go back and re-read the Bible where it says that Moses destroyed the tablets because the people worshipped a golden calve. You have been worshipping the golden calve far too long and you have lost sight what is right and what is wrong.
So be a mensch and get lost by bowing out of politics quietly. You're a disgrace to your people.
J Sbow | 08.09.06 11:02 AM
"The old politics of polarization won today. For the sake of our state, my country and my party, I cannot and will not let those results stands today. Joe, You've been in the Senate for 18 years. You had your chance. You turned your back on your party and brown-nosed the current administration. Go away. Due to your stances during the past 6 years, you do not deserve to represent anyone any longer.
Anita | 08.09.06 11:08 AM
--"...I cannot and will not let those results stands today."
"I will continue to offer Connecticut a different path forward."
--
Wrong! The results do and will stand, cannot change them, done and counted. That he wants to go 'Independent' means he wants to have a different result "TOMORROW". Sad that he did not have that attitude in 2000 when it could have made a difference.
Cole... | 08.09.06 11:17 AM
If Joe does run it should be as an "Independent Republican" that way if he wins he could caucus with and piss off both parties.
Cole... | 08.09.06 11:29 AM
I would encourage everyone with a Democratic Senator to write, call or email those Senators today and tell them that you expect them to support the DEMOCRATIC candidate from Connecticut. I questioned Barbra Boxer about her support for Loserman and from her snippy response one would think that he deserved a seat at the right hand of God (at least that's the appropriate side for him). Loserman is no longer a Democrat, he quit this morning and should no longer be treated as a Democrat.
Spike Heels | 08.09.06 12:04 PM
As a longtime resident (and DEMOCRAT) in Connecticut,
I've grown accustomed to Joe LIEberman's oily tactics. The Democratic Party nominates him as
Vice President in 2000 and he refuses to step down from his Senate seat (leaving it open for a Repugnican).
Bet Hedging #1 aka "Weasel"
He was also quick to distance him from John Kerry right after the 2004 election and
snuggled up close to the Smirking Chimp, believing his WMD story hook line and sinker.
"There's no prizes for second place in American politics." - Lieberman on Kerry circa 2004
Now, to insult the Connecticut Democrats by saying he doesn't accept their decision?
That's some crybaby talk, right there.
He is a LOSER, plain and simple.
And a whiney one at that.
Do the honorable thing for once, Joe
and get out to show your support for true Democrats!
No more "I'm having your cake and eating it too" LIEberman
NED LAMONT - CT DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE 2006 !!!
Steemer | 08.09.06 12:06 PM
CWA,
Pardon me, but you are an idiot. Since when does a congressional candidate need prior political experience?
I only need to point you to Sen. Bill Frist, who in 1994 defeated a popular 3-term career politician. I urge you to go check the bio on his web site to see what political experience he had prior to 1994. But let me save you the time. Answer: none.
And what position does this no-policial-career politician now hold?
WC | 08.09.06 12:18 PM
LIEBERMAN IS JUST DESCRIBING HIMSELF
Lieberman represents the "old politics of polarization" and lost. Because he is partisan, hateful, polarizing, and disdainful of democracy he "cannot let those results stand."
Ned Lamont is the one who "will continue to offer Connecticut a different path forward."
LIeberman was rejected because "People are fed up with the petty partisanship and angry bickering in Washington." People like Joe Lieberman are "continually blocking progress on major problems and wasting America's greatness."
Joe will always "work with members of the other party" if it helps lobbyists, neocons, millionaires, and special interests. Joe will always do what he believes is right for Sean Hannity regardless of what the political consequences may be."

As Leopold Amery said to Neville Chamberlain prior to Britain selecting Winston Churchill as its WWII Prime Minister,.....................
"Depart I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God! Go!".
This also applies to Joe Lieberman. The voters of Connectticut have spoken.
Bahtat | 08.09.06 12:31 PM
CWA,
Perhaps "idiot" was too harsh a word. I apologize.
Now...perhaps that's what we need more of in Congress - people that are not career politicians and who can offer a fresh perspective on things. Can Lamont, should he win, get things done in Congress? Maybe, maybe not. But I'm all for giving him the chance. He certainly can't screw things up any worse than they are now. Plus, the voters can turn him out during the next election if they aren't happy with him. That's the way our system is supposed to work, after all.

Joe: I voted for you last time around, on the VP ticket. Now, after seeing how self-serving you are (you don't care what is right for this country, only for yourself & your big ego), I have lost all respect for you. Just do the US a favor and retire from politics. Go join the neocons; they love you since you are one of 'em. They will give you what you crave, praise, money, and power, long as you keep kissing up to them. The kind of politician you are--pandering, weak, self-serving--this nation does not need.
Suzie Q | 08.09.06 01:55 PM
Joe couldn't possibly support the Democratic nominee because he's a Republican at heart. It didn't take long for the spin machine to say we're weak on national security and it was all about Joe's willingness to be bi-partisan. As a Democrat, you should know you're in trouble when Newt, Sean, Ann, Bill, Michelle, Rush and Fox News are endorsing you.
Debbie | 08.09.06 02:13 PM
"And over one issue!"
Not really, but if it were, wouldn't thousands of American lives, tens of thousands of Iraqi lives, hundreds of billions of dollars, our loss of credibility worldwide and all the newly-minted teerrorists in Islamic countries make it a pretty important issue? Can you remember a more important single issue in your lifetime? I'm amazed by those that try to pretend the Iraq occupation is not a big deal.
"The left's claim, 'Dissent is patriotic,' is now a complete hypocrisy, and the good Senator from Connecticut was correct to point that out."
Jess, could you explain to me how you and Joe have exposed hypocrisy? You make this statement and offer no evidence or even a logical thread that implies it. In fact, being informed, seeing fault in our government and then taking action to change it *is* patriotic. Ever heard about our American revolution? This is nowhere near as radical, but it's all completely in line with the philosophy of the founding fathers.
bruiser | 08.09.06 02:15 PM
If Lamont makes it to the Senate I guess I'll just wait until he stops the Earth from turning and brings the troops home from Iraq single handedly. Give me a break. Joe has a better shot at doing anything in the Senate than Lamont ever will.
Guess what?
Joe's been in D.C. for 18 years and hasn't changed a GD thing. He is so out of touch about what's going on in Connecticut, it isn't even funny.
He paid some token visits to his "home state" this year for a feeble campaign drive but other than that he's a ghost. You can't ride on hubris for very long Joe. Connecticut is fed up with your lip service for too many years, let's get someone in there who's actually going to effect change and not kowtow to the Republicans and their plan for world subjugation!
Joe's speech and appearance on the Good Morning America show were hysterical - "It's time we took back the Democratic Party and give it back to the mainstream public..." OMFG, have you been asleep these past eight years, Joe? We're trying to do that, except now we're going to have to go through you to do it.
I hope Lieberman and his PAC money will be very happy together.
What an arrogant, self-serving bastard -
Find a Red State to live in, you weasel!
Steemer | 08.09.06 02:16 PM
Lieberman couldn't concede fast enough in Florida fraud 2000; his refusal to take a principled stand and to FIGHT for us all and for oure constitution was a major factor in Gore's decision to throw in the towel. Now WE THE PEOPLE can call him SORE LOSERMAN for real.
JP | 08.09.06 02:27 PM
For Joe, "bipartisanship" means making a big show of siding with Republicans and questioning the patriotism of his (former) party. At some point, in the runup to the war, that act got cold for the Connecticut Democrats paying attention. I'm looking forward to a Lamont win in November.

I am a convert to the Sikh religion of India and think religious prejudice in any form is reprehensible. I draw the line, however, when any criticism of Israel is seen as anti-Semitism. I would have more respect for Lieberman's pro-war position if at some point he tried to encourage young Jewish-Americans to join the military and do their part in Iraq. These young people are in medical school and law school with no time for military service. Many Jewish-Americans have done basic military training in IDF summer programs! There is hypocrisy here...
I say this bearing mind a Jewish-American high school chum who was killed in action just 50 yards from me during the Vietnam War.
Fateh Singh aka "Frank" | 08.10.06 05:13 PM
Old Joe Lieberman is showing his true colors. By running as an Independent, he will split the Democratic vote so his Republican friends will win his seat.
It's about time for an Anti-Incumbent Party:
Pete | 08.15.06 12:47 PM
Joe lost the primary by 10,000 votes. Ten times that amount of voters were on vacation in CT. Let's also remember saving the sub-base and other fine accomplishments Joe has brought home to Connecticut.
For those of you (Connecticut-ers) who think Ned Lamont will have ANY clout to end the war you have to be kidding yourself. Certainly Ned Lamont had the right to challenge Joe on a hot single issue. Certainly Joe has the right to run as an independent. Which one has the experience to actually get things done?
Nothing against Ned Lamont, but as the heir to JP Morgan's partner, his super-wealthy upbringing, and Greenwich life style I wonder if Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were the first black people he has ever seen - at least outside his mansion's kitchen. As for me, I'll go with the devil I know - GO JOE!
