Shaming The Donors

How else to explain this New York Times article? More donors read the New York Times than any other news source. It's the house organ of the Democratic Party's financial establishment. Note that the new 527 provided the New York Times with a list of wealthy liberals it wants money from. By printing those names, the article willingly exposes these donors to pressure from their fellow wealthy liberals. Note the dire warnings about the Republican prowess.

Major Dem donors and a "top party operative" have "banded together to "deliver a barrage of late advertising and on-the-ground action" for Dem House and Senate candidates in the fall. Ex-Clinton aide Harold Ickes and donors are "soliciting money for a new organization" called the "September Fund." They "hope to raise and spend as much as" $25M to "influence not only crucial Congressional races" but down-ballot campaigns and initiatives as well. Ickes "has already contacted George Soros" about a donation; other potential donors include Steve Bing, Linda Pritzker, Herb and Marion Sandler and Ted Waitt, Gateway's founder. The September Fund will be set up as a 527. Its pres. will be Erik Smith, who "directed" the Media Fund in '04. smith said the group "began soliciting money less than a week ago" and had "already secured pledges for several million dollars." Others involved in the fund include AFl-CIO pol. dir Karen Ackerman, Change to Win chair Anna Burger, Ret. Gen. Wes Clark, ex-Edwards mgr. Nick Baldick and NY strategist Bill Lynch (Broder, New York Times, 9/14).
