Polls Show Better News For GOPers

A new round of CNN/Opinion Research polls in five states show Dems leading in 3 of 5 top races and tied in one. Looks like Missouri is the Dems' 51st seat and the GOPers' firewall. The results, of between 500-600 LVs per state (margin of error +/- 4.4% to 4%):

MISSOURI

Sen. Jim Talent (R) 49%
Aud. Claire McCaskill (D) 49

NEW JERSEY

Sen. Bob Menendez (D) 51%
State Sen. Tom Kean (R) 44

OHIO

Rep. Sherrod Brown (D) 54%
Sen. Mike DeWine (R) 43

TENNESSEE

Ex-Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker (R) 52%
Rep. Harold Ford (D) 44

VIRGINIA

Ex-Navy Sec. Jim Webb (D) 50%
Sen. George Allen (R) 46

How is this "better news" for the GOP. These polls at face value put the senate at 50/50 and McCaskill on the brink of making it 51/49 Dems. Other than TN, those polls are all bad news for the GOP

Uh, where is the better news for the GOP? Webb's up in VA, Menendez looks like a hold in Jersey, McCaskill is tied in Missouri as many expected, and DeWine is finished - only the Ford poll is bad news for Dems. And let's face it, in our heart of hearts, did we REALLY expect the good old folks of Tennessee to send a black man to the senate?

If the current CNN polls hold, coupled w/ Dem leads in Rhode Island, Montana, Penn, Dems come within a hair of taking the senate and still might, given what happens on election day in Missouri.

How is this good news for the GOP? It shows them losing VA and very close to losing MO. That would give the Democrats the majority in the Senate. I agree, this would be good news for the country, but not for the GOPers.

how is this "Better News For GOPers?"

Out of curiosity, why is this better news for the GOP? They're set to lose RI, PA and MT, and these polls show them losing OH and VA with MO tagged at 49. A loss of 5 seats and then turnout in MO with the stem cell ballot initiative on the ballot flips the Senate. Isn't this bad news for the GOP?

how is that better news for GOP ers? they improved in one race and fell behing in
VA you really got to be grasping at at straws here.

Wish you would also post the numbers among regisgtered voters -- the more Dems can make the likely voter pool reflect the registered voter pool (which may be possible given the efforts with turnout) -- the better off they seem to be - esp. in Missouri

Better news? That's quite an interesting take on these polls given the fact that two weeks, or even one week ago nobody though Jim Webb was going to beat George Allen. Mike DeWine is down 11% to Sherrod Brown and Bob Menendez, the GOPs best (and only) shot at taking out a Dem is pulling away from Kean Jr. And that's BETTER news for the GOP? I'll take this worse news for the Dems any day.

In what way is this better news for the GOP? They've lost the lead in VA and NJ and they're still tied in MO.

Could someone explain the headline? How is this good news for the GOP?

Virginia is sliding away from the GOP, and Menendez has taken a small lead in New Jersey.

How is this better news for Gopers? Webb is now up, where he once trailed. Menedez's lead is getting bigger. Dewine's lead isn't moving and McCaskill is tied after trailing narrowly in most polls. The only good news at all if Ford if you are a Republican.

I'm sorry, how is this better news for the GOP? If they pick up Missouri & Virginia, the Democrats win the Senate.
