2. Can The NRSC Steele One From The Dems?: In NJ, the NRSC's spending $500K to continue airing state Sen. Tom Kean Jr.'s (R) latest TV ad "that questions the ethics" of Sen. Bob Menendez (D).
Although Kean spokesperson Jill Hazelbaker said "it speaks volumes about how well-positioned we are to win," Cook Political Report's Jennifer Duffy said it seems as if the NRSC's " testing the waters." Menendez spokesperson Matt Miller said the DSCC spent $1Mto keep a Menendez ad on-air. (<Star Ledger).
Meanwhile, the NRSC's spending $650K in MD to co-sponsor an ad on behalf of LG Michael Steele (R). The ad includes debate clips of Rep. Ben Cardin.
3. OH The Horror!: Sen. Mike DeWine's (R) camp and nat'l GOPers spent 10/16 "trying to douse the flames" of a New York Times story "quoting anonymous" GOP operatives "saying that DeWine's race is believed to be a lost cause."
A DeWine aid said that since DeWine was "promised continued support" by RNC chair Ken Mehlman, "the story doesn't make any sense." Analysts say "the need to bolster" GOP Senate candidates in other "nip-and-tuck" races "coupled with DeWine's substantial campaign fund" supports the article (Columbus Dispatch).
