1. Spend To Defend: Where there are open seats, there are big spenders...

In IL 06, state Sen. Peter Roskam's (R) banked $1.5M in the 3rd Q-- nearly 7 times Iraq War Vet Tammy Duckworth's (D) CoH total; in FL 13, auto dealer Vern Buchanan (R) spent over $3M – most of it from his own pockets.

Meanwhile,many Democratic candidates are keeping pace. Child safety activist Patty Wetterling (D) in MN 06 raised the second-largest sum ($1.33M) of all open-seat candidates. In IA 01, atty Bruce Braley (D) raised $822K CoH to Restaurateur Mike Whalen's (R) $518K.

2. The Scarlett Letter:

Voters in Rep. Don Sherwood's (R) district received "a personal note from Carol Sherwood," the "first public comment" from D. Sherwood's wife about her husband's alleged affair. C. Sherwood calls college prof. Chris Carney's (D) TV ads "needlessly cruel." She says "Perhaps Carney gets some pleasure out of hurting our family." Yet while Carney said it's "regretful that her husband's embarrassing indiscretions have become news," he said he's "glad Ms. Sherwood has found peace in her marriage" (Wilkes Barre Citizen's Voice).

3. A Bounce Or A Blip?: New DCCC polls show GOPers trailing Dems in CT 04, CT 05 and PA 08.

Good News For Shays Is The Environment Can't Get Much Worse:

A Bennett Petts & Blumenthal (D) poll; conducted 10/10-12 for the DCCC; surveyed 400 LVs; margin of error +/- 4.9% (release, 10/16). Tested: Rep. Chris Shays (R) and ex-Westport First Selectwoman/'04 nom. Diane Farrell (D).

4. Anger Management: Rep. Sue Kelly (R) "fired back" at ex-Ulster Co. Legislator John Hall's (D) charge after he suggested she missed "the warning signs" of ex-Rep. Mark Foley's (R-FL) behavior toward cong. pages. Kelly, who led the House Page Board during the earliest reports of Foley's misbehavior: "I just can't believe that you would accuse me... I have fought for children all of my life! You have no shame!" Hall: "I was merely stating that I think that it's time for people who are in power and in position of responsibility to take that responsibility. That includes that you're trying to dodge the fact that ..." Kelly: "I am not dodging that. You are shameful in your behavior." Hall: "Just be quiet and listen to the rest of my sentence" (Herald Record).
