One Is An Outlier, But Two?

Pew is out with their final pre-election poll and just like the ABC/Wash. Post poll, Pew shows Republicans with momentum. In the generic ballot, Dems lead by just 4 points. More importantly, the GOP has made significant cuts into the Dems once gigantic lead among indies. Also of note, from the release:

"There also are some indications that Sen. John Kerry’s “botched joke” about the war Iraq may have had a modest impact on the race. Fully 84% of voters say they have heard a lot or a little about Kerry’s remarks – with 60% saying they have heard a lot. By comparison, just 26% say they have heard a lot about President Bush’s statement that he will keep Donald Rumsfeld as secretary of Defense until he leaves office in 2009."

Looking at the internals of the Pew poll, 36% of their interviewees were from the South (651 out of 1795). 30% of congressional districts are in the South -- and far less than 30% of the competitive congressional districts are in the South.

Also, the Pew poll likely voter model is 35% Republican (628/1795), 32% Democratic (582/1795) which seems strange.

Additionally, I'd note the Time poll out today has Dems leading 55-40.

And those numbers show how worthless the media continues to be.

Kerry misreads a joke? Wall to wall coverage. Bush promises to keep a Defense Secretary the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times urge him to sack? A couple mentions here and there.

The media shows its true colors.

Over a third of likely voters from the south where there are four regions sampled? Yeah right.

liberal media, ha!

which statement has an actual impact in the "reality based community" something John Kerry, a man with no actual power, said, or the fact that Bush is keeping on Rumsfeld, a man with actual power, who by all accouts, has been a failure?

the media has long ceased doing its job of "reporting" on news. faux news is the way of the future.

i just hopes our troops' feelings weren't hurt too much. better their ego not get bruised than keep them safe.

its a joke.

Kerry's statement was stupid, but there's nothing wrong with Bush's. Bush has kept Rumsfeld and said he would not fire him the entire time leading up to now, so why does it matter at all if he says now, again, that he will not fire Rumsfeld. Why do Democrats have such a hate for Rumsfeld?

This could be another election where the MSM's decision to run with the GOP's talking points will have swayed the electorate.

The media should be ashamed of itself.

ABC/CNN/MSNBC/CBS/NBC interview question:

In the final week of a close mid-term election campaign, the President states that he is retaining his disastrous SecDef for another two years just after the former candidate for President from the other party botches a joke in a way that is susceptible to being purposefully manipulated into sounding bad by those who are not stupid enough to actually believe that the former candidate actually meant it.

Which story do you lead with for the final week of the campaign?

Anyway, thanks, so-called liberal media!

Great job covering the real story among the two possibilities above. Americans are so much better informed, thanks to you.
