It's Official: Bayh's Not Running

From Evan Bayh's statement:

The odds were always going to be very long for a relatively unknown candidate like myself, a little bit like David and Goliath. And whether there were too many Goliaths or whether I'm just not the right David, the fact remains that at the end of the day, I concluded that due to circumstances beyond our control the odds were longer than I felt I could responsibly pursue. This path - and these long odds - would have required me to be essentially absent from the Senate for the next year instead of working to help the people of my state and the nation.

"Too many Goliaths"? Sounds like Obama-mania has claimed another victim.

Indy Star has the definitive story.

Just a thought here: with over $10M in the bank, maybe Bayh is also thinking that if Obama explodes and Gore doesn't get into the race, he could get back into the race late next year. Let's face it, Bayh was right that he face what appear to be insurmountable odds right now. With Hillary and Obama stealing the spotlight (and with Gore lurking in the background) it will be increasingly difficult to raise money, obtain media coverage and gain momentum. Meanwhile he'd be spending a lot of that $10M. While it's unlikely, what if Obamamania dissipates to nil, Hillary becomes more unattractive to party regulars and Gore definitively decides not to run? Bayh could conceivable jump into the race in December 07 and at least have some of the resources to jumpt start a campaign in Iowa and NH. Granted, it'd be difficult, but perhaps substantially less so than the circumstances he now faces.
