Romney Can Dial All He Wants...
...no amount of cash today can match the exposure John McCain received tonight during the coin toss of the BCS nat'l title game between the two biggest schools in the two most important states in presidential campaign lore. The referee made a point to make sure that the players from swing states Florida and Ohio State were personally introduced to McCain. Last time we checked, there were quite a few red state types tailgating most falls in both Florida and Ohio State and many of those folks are GOP primary voters.

Tossing a coin or fundraising $6.5 million......hmmmmmmmm.........McCain really worked his tail off didn't he. That $6.5 million will go a lot further than a bunch of people seeing an old, bald man toss a coin.

I won't be voting in any Republican primary and I sure won't be donating any money to any candidate on the other side of the aisle, but I think this analysis is a bit off.
$6.5 million is a lot of money. Although it's a pittance of what it will cost to run just a primary campaign for 2008, I'm pretty sure it's the largest single-day haul since McCain-Feingold became law.
While I have no idea what the Nielsen numbers look like for tonight's game in the early primary states, the notion that Ohio's primary voters will play a factor in determining the GOP nominee is ridiculous. UnlessFlorida actually moves up it's primary date, McCain can flip all the coins he wants... and it won't really matter.

The point is it's going to cost Romney over 6.5 million just to explain to Ohio and Florida voters exactly who the hell he is. The poster is correct.

The 2008 GOP primary is Romney vs. McCain

Romney has no intention of explaining to Ohio and Florida voters, vis-a-vis money, who he is. He's going to win the Iowa caucus, then place second in New Hampshire. And everyone will know who he is.

The idea that any average American is thinking about 2008 yet is pretty absurd. The people reading Hotline are the less than 1% who care at this point.
