Edwards, On The Tales Of Two Bloggers
Sen. John Edwards' camnpaign released a statement about the blogger controversy (finally!), including the following remarks from Edwards and bloggers Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwen:
Edwards, on McEwen and Marcotte: “The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte's and Melissa McEwen's posts personally offended me... it's not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people... that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on my campaign, whether it's intended as satire, humor, or anything else."
He continues: "But I also believe in giving everyone a fair shake. I've talked to Amanda and Melissa; they have both assured me that it was never their intention to malign anyone's faith, and I take them at their word. We're beginning a great debate about the future of our country, and we can't let it be hijacked.”
Marcotte: “My writings on my personal blog, Pandagon on the issue of religion are generally satirical in nature and always intended strictly as a criticism of public policies and politics... I am sorry if anyone was personally offended by writings meant only as criticisms of public politics.”
McEwen, on what she wrote in her blog, Shakespeare's Sister: " I certainly don't expect Senator Edwards to agree with everything I've posted... It has never been my intention to disparage people's individual faith, and I'm sorry if my words were taken in that way.”

First, I'm not an actively practicing Catholic. Second, I"m not a 'right winger' in any sense. Third, I"m deeply offended and concerned - What if, instead of questioning and belittling Christ and Catholics, it had been the Holocaust and Jews? Are Catholics fair game for insult and ridicule to you?
The support I'd considered for Edwards, is now out of the question.
I can't support someone who does not recognize bigotry, hatred and intolerance in his own employees. We've all heard of Hitlers willing executioners - Keeping these haters onboard - is supporting them. It's interesting - and telling - how some here are trying to forget the intolerant hate of Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwen and try to portray the justified reaction to it as some sort of rabid-right-wing conspiracy. Hitler also blamed his victims, they were the problem, and he had his willing executioners.
I hope that Edwards wake's up - smell's the hate and assumes the courage to DO something about it - people like Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwen don't belong in mainstream American politicas - period - find them a nice anti-Catholic hate group to join - I'm sure they'll enjoy the company... or do they already?
I can only judge Edwards by the company he keeps. Anti-Catholicism is apparently still alive and well in the old south of the KKK. Mr. Edwards - please be sure that Amanda and Melissa, remember to wash their sheets before wearing them.

My only regret is that Edwards didn't go after Donohue. He's the real bigot. Melissa wouldn't have voted for John Kerry if she was an anti-Catholic bigot. Regardless, Donohue is insane to begin with.

....and for this Georgia Catholic it is nice to see a candidate stand tall in the face of bullying. Bravo John Edwards, I hope the rest of the field starts doing the same...
