Falling On Geffen Ears
Hillary Clinton's campaign apparently didn't take too kindly to the harsh rhetoric from L.A. music mogul David Geffen, courtesy of today's Maureen Dowd. Geffen, who is backing Barack Obama, called Bill Clinton "reckless" and clearly is still upset that Clinton didn't grant a pardon to cause celeb native American Leonard Peltier. More Geffen: "Marc Rich getting pardoned? An oil-profiteer expatriate who left the country rather than pay taxes or face justice?"
Clinton chief spokesperson Howard Wolfson, in a release this a.m., is "demanding that" Obama "disavow personal attacks" from Geffen. Wolfson: "While Senator Obama was denouncing slash and burn politics yesterday, his campaign's finance chair was viciously and personally attacking Senator Clinton and her husband. If Senator Obama is indeed sincere about his repeated claims to change the tone of our politics, he should immediately denounce these remarks, remove Mr. Geffen from his campaign and return his money. While Democrats should engage in a vigorous debate on the issues, there is no place in our party or our politics for the kind of personal insults made by Senator Obama's principal fundraiser."
We're waiting on a response from Obama's camp. And while we wait, we'd love to speculate as to why the Clinton folks chose pick this battle? It's not as if they are used to getting good Dowd columns. And considering that this may be the first serious back-n-forth between Clinton and Obama of the campaign, it could end up stepping on the NV Dem-AFSCME cattle call. Do the Clinton folks want to see how quickly Obama backs down (if he does)? Do they simply want to highlight Obama's Hollywood ties? Or are some Clinton folks simply mad at Geffen? Has he said harsher things that we don't know about?

If I am John Edwards I am having a ball watching this. All Edwards needs to do is keep his head down and let these two beat each other to a pulp. If they do a good job destroying each other Edwards can rise from the ashes.

They have dished it out for years, but can't seem to take it themselves...
brian | 02.21.07 12:19 PM
Hooray for Geffen. The Enabler of Bill's disfunctionality, Hillary, has finally had a liberal speak truth to the Clinton's presumption of Democratic Party power. Why did it have to take so long?
radbwana | 02.21.07 12:23 PM
Obama should say NOTHING. He should never bend over to Clinton's demands!!
Delsa Winslow | 02.21.07 12:24 PM
This is going to get good. I can't wait. Whos got the popcorn?
Scott | 02.21.07 12:29 PM
Millions have called the clintons a crime family , why does barak hossain obama need to speak on there behalf. The clintons are rotten and we know it . GO AWAY HILLARY ROTTEN CLINTON.
alan | 02.21.07 12:29 PM
who cares what bill or hillary think? they are both con artists and can dish it out but not take it.
mike davis | 02.21.07 12:33 PM
Clinton's old law partners went to jail. Her husband freed criminals for profit. Judge a person by the company they keep.
Ed Herbst | 02.21.07 12:35 PM
When is the truth a slam? Didn't Bill, I just love those little interns, Clinton pardon Rich, then visit with his wife a few times? Excuse me...how is Hillary going to keep him in line if she is the Prez?
Tod Taylor | 02.21.07 12:37 PM
when you boil all the fat off this.....obama is still going to be the next commander-in-chief....cant we just fast forward to 11/08? lets do that and save our country all the traditional bs involved in an election
joey | 02.21.07 12:43 PM
Hillary Clinton and company are all through politically in USA. As has been already noted, their glib distortion of fact comes so easily that they either now reside in fantasy land, or they lost all connection with reality years ago. Whatever the case, it's now time for Senator Clinton to fold her tent and move on and attend to the matters of New York state.
Tom Constantine | 02.21.07 12:43 PM
Amazing, these Hollywood types. They don't like the queen of leftists? Shows you how far out in left field they really are. They have all this money and are overwhelmed with guilt. So they embrace the far left socialists. Whose taxes and programs will not effect them, they have all the money in the world. Nope, it will just bury the middle class, the people who make this country what it is......Short sighted and stupid. But hey, aren't they the anointed?
Brett | 02.21.07 12:44 PM
Geffen's comments are 100% on point - which is why Hillary and Co. will never actually respond. These ideas need to be heard - since when does your last name automatically qualify you for the presidency? It boggles the mind to think that the US, with probably the greatest pool of talented individuals in the world, should simply go into default mode when choosing its president. Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton? I would rather endure a McCain or Giuliani presidency, even though my politics are probably more closely aligned to Shillary's.
ayenew | 02.21.07 12:47 PM
The truth hurts doesn't it, especially when you have never told it and don't recognize it. You may recall the story citing the Clinton's taking (stealing) the White House furniture when they left. In my view it's about going back to get the rest that they missed. Or perhaps they will find the rest of the paperwork on the Arkansas law suits.
Running on their record is a terrible thing for them...especially when some of us have long memories. But it's all about the convenient truths and half truths, and up to US (the voters) to sort it out. Do your homework! You guys down there on New Hampshire Avenue...
Let's bring a little bit of the wisdom North of Concord down to DC. Come up here to the real NH where many of us will try to sort it out. But no guarantees.. its' 2007, not 1955.
Bob in NH | 02.21.07 12:49 PM
Since when is David Geffen Senator Obama's finance chair? And what was so "vicious" about theses "attacks?" They look more like valid criticism to me, and even if they aren't valid, wouldn't you think Hillary would know that criticism will come at you when you run for President? Stop being petty, Hillary!
David | 02.21.07 12:51 PM
If Hillary can't take the heat in the kitchen she best get out of the race. Damn forgot Hillary has no clue what a kitchen is. It's her own fault that supporters of Bill can't stand and want nothing to do with this temper tantrumed crazed angry Hillary is getting slammened. Keep pouring the water on the Witch maybe she'll do an Oz and meltdown and go away.
John Gage | 02.21.07 12:56 PM
Geffen is absolutely right in his conclusions about the Clintons. Gutsy, but smart!!!
Kurt Eckard | 02.21.07 12:56 PM
poor hillary...see she just can't take it...she deserves it..after eight years co presidency ...hope obama will attack...she is liar and worthless senator...hope she doesn't win the general election. mark my word she will start investigating her opponents and try to dig up trash. i hope someone dig up dirt on her.
paul | 02.21.07 12:58 PM
Good to see Geffen say something positive for a change. Of course he's corrrect to say this about the Clintons. The Clintons are so corrupt, ambitious, unethical and misguided. They already enjoyed the White House for nine years and don't need to return. Its time for someone else.
roger gonzales | 02.21.07 01:02 PM
looks like mr. wolfson doesn't like the truth. obama should not apologize for what mr. geffen said. hollywood is finally waking up and backing a very compelling candidate.
sheiladoctor | 02.21.07 01:03 PM
I don't think the truth is slash and burn politics. There are worse things, also true, to be said about Billary.
Betsy | 02.21.07 01:04 PM
Knowing how large a part Hollywood plays in the public eye from tax breaks to Darfur the Clinton camp knows what it is asking of Obama. By being on the defensive and playing the innocent Clinton gets to put pressure on Obama to give up huge amounts of campaign money and influence. It is a cheap trick because the contributor, Geffen, is vocal about his dislike of the Clinton and it may cost Clinton the nomination. It is politics as usual and should be taken as water off Obama's back. I personally think Obama should come out asking why Clinton is trying to surreptitiously curb freedom of speech and opinion if the Clinton camp presses the issue. And he should definitely not give up the support in Hollywood which he can ride all the way to the White House.
RG from LA | 02.21.07 01:10 PM
Let the implosion of the DNC begin.
Stephen | 02.21.07 01:14 PM
This is classic Clinton strategy. Turn any criticism around into a criticism & attack against the author of the criticism, and whomever they may represent, no matter how tenuously. In general, democrats have been using this ploy, but the master is Hillary. It's just business as usual for her.
Liz | 02.21.07 01:17 PM
Who cares what he has to say.....another celeb who know nothing nor contributes anything worthwhile to society.
Gloria | 02.21.07 01:20 PM
I love it, I love it. More, please. People have to start treating Billary like a real candidate. She isn't used to that. All they have to do is tell the truth. That will get her hopping mad. Go Geffen.
Penny Griber | 02.21.07 01:26 PM
I'm confused. Is the Hillary Clinton that Howard Wolfberg refers to the same Hillary Clinton that is married to former President Bill Clinton?
Yossel | 02.21.07 01:26 PM
It is so rare, pleasant and refreshing to see even a little truth about the Clintons actually make it through the media's oppressive silencing of all negative comments regarding them. Our media has degenerated to such a mindless, pathetic low that it takes the combined efforts of a liberal black presidential candidate and a liberal multi-billionaire to accomplish it.
Joe | 02.21.07 01:27 PM
You have to love those folks in Hollywood. They have answers to political questions no one would ever ask. Also, they tend to be the most misinformed group in the country. Well, maybe not misinformed just slightly to the left. They are the largest listened to coterie in America, yet for what ever reason they never seem to mind what what they say. Right or wrong it doesn't seem to matter as long as they get a sound bite. This brings to mind the words of Darryl Zanuk, when asked what he thought of Fitzgerald, Williams and Faulkner, he replied "Idiots with Underwoods". Nice to know that some things never change.
edward hill | 02.21.07 01:29 PM
This is so much fun watching the left sef-destruct. It will only get worse and more entertaining.
Jeff Dyke | 02.21.07 01:37 PM
This is great news the liberals are attacking each other and already destroying their opportunity to get back in control. Get Al Gore on the phone. Never mind global warming we need you more than the frickin' polar bears do now!
Earl | 02.21.07 01:43 PM
Here we go again!
Tired of it all | 02.21.07 01:49 PM
I love to watch the Liberal Dems eat each other for dinner and to have the loony Hollywood left involved is icing on the cake. Keep it up folks. :)
Jeff | 02.21.07 01:53 PM
Considering the smear tactics that the Clinton camp has been associated with in the past and present- I personally find it hilarious they are being such whinning babies on this issue. An adult in their camp needs to tell them they cannot have it both ways!
Darrell Kern | 02.21.07 01:53 PM
Geffen has taken the Clinton's bull**** by the tail and looked the situation right in the face. Bill and Hill are, of course, pathological liars who will absolutely say and do anything to obtain and hold power. God forbid Hillary should ever get into the White House. The staff will have to set aside an auditorium sized room just for Bill to "interview" all the young female interns. All of whom he no doubt will NOT have sex with.
Where, oh where are Harry Truman and Jack Kennedy when we need them most?
Dick Jerome | 02.21.07 01:56 PM
Hillary is going to be running mostly on Bill's record - as she has none of her own to really showcase. Therefore, you will see her (them) very sensitive to any bad press about the Utopia that Was Bill Clinton's Presidency.
Stan B in Louisville | 02.21.07 01:58 PM
Thank god, some in Hollywood know what the Clintons are really about, and here i thought they are were Clinton lovers!!
Chris | 02.21.07 01:59 PM
Another rich, pampered IDIOT speaking about things he has little to no knowledge of. I am not a hillary fan by any imagination, however obama is a nothing, anyone backing him is a nothing. He has NO EXPERIENCE other than talking (flapping his jaws) .
Terry | 02.21.07 02:07 PM
I just love it when political parties infight! Talk about giving the opposition fuel for the campaign fire! If the Dems are treating their own like this when the primaries are a long way off, imagine what the diatribe will be like between Dem and GOP nominees? I'm giddy with anticipation!!!! In the meantime, I hold out hope for a party that one day represents the majority moderate mainstream and outright rejects the vastly outnumbered (and increasingly delusional) left and right extremists.
Jeff | 02.21.07 02:07 PM
I agree. We already had a clinton, we don't need another. Yes they are the same. Lets move the US forward. Not back to the same old clinton days.
joe klien | 02.21.07 02:07 PM
Oh, please. Stop it. All of these people suffer from latent adolescence -- and pardon me, but that includes Senator Obama. Most of us have clay feet, so, let's be intellectual honest for a change. Gracious God, wouldn't that have an affect on the campaign. Not holding my breath.
Joseph | 02.21.07 02:16 PM
Hillary's giving Obama 90 days to begin withdrawing from Hollywood, or face a cut off of funds.
CY | 02.21.07 02:17 PM
When someone speaks out on the shortcomings (lies) of the Clintons, they in turn scream "character assassination."
Jay | 02.21.07 02:34 PM
The Clinton's are just the worst of the liberal elites, Mr. Geffen.
I agree that they are, shall we say "insincere" -
(phony, power-grabbing, hypocrites is being kind).
However, if given a chance, would any liberal be any better?
I am a conservative, who is also disillusioned with many Republicans, but the liberal Democrats have sunk to historic lows in their positions on social issues and in their (yes, I will say it) traiterous and unpatriotic position on the war on terror, which they no longer even attempt to conceal. They are pathetic.
Lydia T Silva | 02.21.07 02:35 PM
Geffen should apologize right after Hillary apologizes for all the insults she has hurled at President Bush.
Stewart | 02.21.07 02:44 PM
Why is it considered an insult when someone speaks the truth about you?
Mike | 02.21.07 02:44 PM
So when the truth about their political records comes out all the Clintons can do is cry about it and demand outlandish actions??? Get real Billary, you just aren't qualified to run a blender let alone a country!
Gary | 02.21.07 02:55 PM
I don't support either candidate but do find it ironic and humorous that the Clinton camp would ever introduce the idea that it is adverse to personal insults. Just how short do they think our memories are?
Stan | 02.21.07 02:58 PM
I find it ironic that self-styled liberal and man-of-the-people David Geffen is now the mouthpiece of the new left. I recall a distastelful lawsuit Mr. Geffen was involved in not too long ago involving gorgeous PUBLIC beachfront property in Malibu, California. Mr. Geffen acted much like Louis XIV, demanding that the unwashed plebians stay off the public oceanfront land outside his personal Malibu Versailles. Good thing that the Sun King lost the suit and now that essential American right of enjoying public property has been upheld.
Kathy Shoreman | 02.21.07 03:00 PM
Problem is, he is right, the Clintons are the worst type of politician in our country, do or say anything to get into power and them make sure all decisions revolve around you making money, and then rip off the White House when you leave, no thanks. Hope she isn't even in the running when election time comes around.
Citizen Kanne | 02.21.07 03:08 PM
The Clintons are corrupt socialists (at best). The reason they complain about this sort of thing is because they know if their character is questioned everyone will see them as they really are...rather than as they portray themselves. If they wanted to discuss "issues" then they wouldn't have had their lackey destroying classified documents, and they and their comrades (Jimmy Carter for example) wouldn't have spent the last several years undermining the war effort rather than doing something to make things better. They love to tear everyone down and then complain when someone calls them out on their credibility and character.
Thomas | 02.21.07 03:12 PM
Finally!!! A Democrat willing to stand up and speak truth about the Clinton Machine. Thank you Mr. Geffen! I can't wait to see what the Hillary campaign will do in response. It will probably have all the subtlety of a brick through a window. Let's hope some other dem candidates grow enough courage to say what they really believe about the Clinton's as well. They were definitiely the worst thing to ever happen to the Democratic Party. ROCK ON OBAMA!!
dave esser | 02.21.07 03:23 PM
What was "personal" in Geffen's comments???
It certainly was a personal (but well-taken) attack on Marc Rich, but only fair comment with respect to former president Clinton. My dictionary defines "reckless" as: indifferent to or disregardful of consequences. What do you think, Monica?
jim brown | 02.21.07 03:29 PM
As much as I'm inclined to agree with Mr. Geffen's opinion of the Clintons -- and the inexcusable pardon of Marc Rich -- I ultimately have to refrain with at least one aspect of his reasoning. Leonard Peltier? Are you kidding me, David? You think he should've granted clemency to a cop killer? Yeesh. Who should he free after that...Mumia? Willie Horton?
Scott | 02.21.07 03:33 PM
If you want to talk experience, let's look at the experiences that we have had with the Clinton's in the past. Come on folks, do we really want to head down that road again. I don't vote due to party, I vote for who I feel might be best for the position. Come on let's see who Hillary pulls into her oval office for a rendezvous!! At least you can somewhat believe what comes out of Obama's mouth. Hillary is here only on the coattail of her shady husband. Yea let's let her be in charge of the little red button.
Fire Guy | 02.21.07 03:42 PM
The Clintons are so transparent,They definitely think they are smarter than everyone else. They have gotten a pass from the media for so long,
they think that they can get away with just about
anything, they 're like alot of liberals, do as I say, not as I do. They are great with there war room but, don't turn it on them, they get vicious.
One Clinton presidency was enough!!
Linda Hamilton | 02.21.07 03:44 PM
I'm suprirsed you take Wolfson's remarks so seriously - they are purely rhetorical. He had to say something, so he said this. Obama's camp will probably ignore it and him.
Joe Shea | 02.21.07 03:47 PM
I’m now convinced Hilary is bi-polar.
tootoo | 02.21.07 04:59 PM
Do democrats ever post comments here? really people, so vicious. The previous Clinton administration had a great economy, kept terrorist at bay and, oh yes, was ACTUALLY LEGALLY ELECTED! I have nothing against Obama. How could I? He hasn't done anything yet. That is something to think about.
happyjack | 02.21.07 05:00 PM
I hope this fight carries over to every single democrat that runs for office. Maybe these nutcases will chew on each other long enough that there wont be anything left to vote for. All of this is going to reveal just how power hungry and completely incapable of real leadership this group is. Go Rudy!!
Chris | 02.21.07 05:02 PM
Really, this is toooooooo much fun! The "real Hillary" has been unveiled, and, as usual, cannot argue the truth, so she trys to destroy the person - I think that's called ad hominem - an illegal manner of argument - but very typical of the Clintons, et al. both of whom being lawyers know only too well - not exceptable !
It looks like even some far left cannot accept these phonies - who said, you can't fool all of the people all of the time ? There are more than a few who have the Clintons' number!
gprice | 02.21.07 05:04 PM
Careful Mr. Geffen. Remember the Clinton body count. This is getting good. Fun to watch all the little worms beat up on each other.
Meanwhile, there are at least three of the Republican candidates who are qualified to be president while none of the Democraps are qualified.
R.D. Lasak | 02.21.07 05:10 PM
let's not forget all the people around the Clintons who have ended up dead when they crossed the "dynamic duo"...
di | 02.21.07 05:12 PM
Well except for Oklahoma City and the first World trade center attack, oh and the two US embassy attacks in Africa, and the Marines, and.... yea Clinton kept terrorists at bay.
Twenty years is enough, no more Clintons, no more Bushes in the White House, STOP the two family rule.
Gal Ore | 02.21.07 05:12 PM
What makes anyone think that the rich feel quilty about being rich? Don't make the mistake of painting them with your own frame of reference. Perhaps, they want you to pay more in taxes so that they can pay less. After all, look at the hypocrisy of U2. I do not believe that any of the Hollywood crowd feels one sense of remorse for being rich. Their wealth just affords them an opportunity to buy influence.
Linda | 02.21.07 05:13 PM
Gee whiz Happyjack, I think lots of Democrats have posted here. I particularly loved the comment comparing Hilliary to the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz (when she melts down). I just can't wait for Hilliary's meltdown!!

Obama's camp should not take the bait here and simply issue a statement that reads "This is between Senator Clinton and Mr. Geffen." Anything more is a
lose-lose for Obambi.
Renegabe | 02.21.07 05:16 PM
I hate to say it, but Geffen is not insulting her but stating truths about them that they would like to sweep under the carpet. On the other hand, I wouldn't vote for either of them if my life depended on it, I just hope they keep it up. I want to watch them expose each other for what they are.
Jimbo | 02.21.07 05:30 PM
Happyjack you have a short memory. The Clintons inherited a growing economy from the Bush Administration, they did nothing to keep terrorists at bay other than to hold press conferences and wring their hands, and the last time I checked the president is elected by the electorial college not by popular vote. The Clintons are great at dishing dirt but lousy at receiving it. This will be fun to watch while the DNC self-destructs over the next two years.

jw | 02.21.07 05:41 PM
If I were the Republicans, I'd be very encouraged the Democrats were acting in such a childish way. They are the party that calls for cooperation and bi partisan politics and they can not even get along in their own party.
Shawn | 02.21.07 05:42 PM
Rich celebrities spend their entire day being told how brilliant they are. Under normal conditions, they demand to be heard--indeed flattered--and their every sneeze is broadcast by the mass media. And Democrats insist on asking these people for money. Brilliant.
John F. | 02.21.07 05:45 PM
Would Geffen have been so gutsy before Obama came on the scene? Probably not. Thank you Obama. Prospects are grim when it's either another Clinton or a republican for 4 more years.
Terri | 02.21.07 05:51 PM
TO happyjack: Ah democrats don't like to think so they are watching Oprah and don't go online....kind of like you, in Clinton inherited the REAGAN BOOM ECONOMY and proceeded to destroy it with retroactive taxes to which Bush was left to undo the damage in 2001.
Glad you take credit for electing Clinton the serial sexual predator....because I will take credit for electing George W. Bush as he was elected and our system works.
Get off Oprah and know Obama has done things. He lied about his Muslim past, took bribes in Chicago and lied about his name, Hussein Barak Obama.
We now return you and to Oprah and democrats eating their own.
LC | 02.21.07 05:51 PM
Having watched the Clinton's and their attack dog Carville in operation for years, I have to say I am delighted! Rove, maggot that he is, has nothin on Carville. If nothing else, if we can consign the likes of Carville and Rove and Clinton and Bush to the garbage heap of history, we will have accomplished much. I am A Democrat, a Democratic Party activist in fact, one of those people who volunteers and knocks on doors and gives money and there is no way on the face of this earth I would consider voting for Clinton. She is the same war mongering, outsourcing, lapdog of big corporations that Bush is.
MikeB | 02.21.07 05:54 PM
Whoever evoked the phrase in a comment "the looney left" sure gets my vote. What should we call the right, the righteous right? Perfect. Total lunacy. All the taunting between right and left in this country has reached the nausea threshold. Was Clinton reckless? Is there salt in salt water?
Dave | 02.21.07 05:55 PM
Well, Geffen finally got his head screwed-on straight for once. Sen. Clinton would be a disaster as President. President Bill Clinton did a pretty good job running the country from 1993 to 2001. Sure he made some mistakes. And yes he embarassed himself by having an affair while in public office. But fundamentally he did his best for his country, and I'm grateful for his efforts.
Mrs. Clinton, on the other hand, is the diametric opposite of her husband. Where he is open, she is secretive. Where he seeks consensus, she seeks exclusivity. Where he can laugh at bad luck, she sees enemies behind every misfortune. Where he is flexible, she is brittle. In short, Hillary Clinton is the epitomy of one who should never be elected to executive high office. I would be very afraid if this person ever had her finger on the nuclear trigger. She is void of morality, compassion or humility. For example, I would hate to see her insulted by some buffoon like Hugo Chavez, fly into a rage and nuc Venezuela out of pique.
Think about it.
Patrick | 02.21.07 05:56 PM
know why divorce is so expensive? because its worth it!!
dave | 02.21.07 05:57 PM
Wow- eat your own! As a conservative (not Republican) looking in, I'd have to saw the Clintons have always been a charade but Obama wants to do the same thing-morph into a viable cantidate on smoke and mirrors. What's he ever done I say to the D's? To the electorate at large-don't be fooled. This guy is all suit and no substance who has a knack for glib. I'vd asked so-called supporters, "what is the fascination?". About all I get is some kind of mumbo-jumbo loosely translated as he's so cool. Maybe second coming of Camelot. Not he actually has good ideas.
Tim Creamer | 02.21.07 05:58 PM
I Love watching the democratic party. It makes for such great comic relief ! It's just too bad that, one of these wannabes could very well wind up sitting in the oval office for four years. That means we're assured a Canadian style health care system that doesn't work, just ask them how great it is. I talk with a few of them quite often with life threatening illnesses. Our military will go right down the tubes as it did the last time the dems were in control. And don't even get me started on the great environmental plans they have with algore being elevated to "World Saviour" of all things environmental. We're doomed. Time to buy up those obsolete missle silos now. They'll come in handy.
Chris | 02.21.07 05:58 PM
All the liberal Hollywood ilk is for Obama who has almost ZERO experience in domestic problems and international politics. Wait until he gets into the trenches of vicious debate...he will be sliced and diced, chewed up and spit out. He is all rhetoric but his "doomsday" will be here before he realizes it. Please, let's elect a real leader...one with a lot of experience whether that person is a Democrat, Republican or an Indepencent.
Harlem Man | 02.21.07 06:02 PM
While I'm no supporter of Obama (or any other liberal, for that matter), and I would rarely agree with Geffen on matters political, I'm with him on this one. It's interesting that some of the liberals who were so quick to rush to Clinton's defense on everything when he was in the White House are now so willing to level criticism at him. And it's all because there's a new liberal hero (potentially) on the scene. Politics as usual. The truth doesn't matter to some of these people until it starts to become useful to their cause.
Mark | 02.21.07 06:09 PM
mr. geffen is right on with his remarks about billary. she thought it was going to be a cake-walk, until obama entered the race. he's gaining steam, and this is troubling her. i have always considered myself a republican, until bush's last term. he lied to the country, time and time again about the war. most of my friends, also republicans, have all taken a great interest in obama, as have i. but the one thing that i constantly hear from ALL my friends republican and democrat is this, 'anybody but hillary'. for now, i'm sticking with obama, how can he possibly be worse than bush or hillary?
richard | 02.21.07 06:13 PM
OK..time for the historical wrap-up. Hillary/Bill Clinton had their time in the WH and screwed it up. Bill on being impeached and Hillary for a total collapse on Universal Healthcare. Obama is a one term Senator who has a small, leftist record with no other attributes other than he can garner "black" voters. McCain is a loser who will never get the GOP base to follow him and Romney a little too liberal for the GOP base. My money is on Rudy Guliani. If you think Obama/Geffen were tough on Hillary, wait until Guiliani 'discusses' Hillary's lack of involvement in post 9/11 activities and cleanup. Go Rudy Go!! Hillary/Obama/Geffen ... take a seat!!

Oh how short people's memories are! The Republican primaries created the attack line of "Voodoo Economics" against Reagan. The Democrat primaries originated "Willie Horton" attacks against Dukakis. Are we now seeing the Democrats offering up free fodder for the Republicans next year? The pardoning of Rich (among other unsavory types) is something the Democrats should bury as deeply as possible.

Can I assume that if Barak Obama is elected, that Leonard Peltier will finally be paroled?
If so and in consideration of his exemplary representation as a conscientious, intelligent and articulate minority representative, Mr. Obama may count on my vote and support. Thanks as well to Mr. Geffin for his support of freeing a political prisoner.

The Clintons are NEVER wrong, NEVER responsible and NEVER guilty. Who knows? Perhaps Obama is part of the "vast right wing conspiracy" which has bedeviled the Clintons ever since their crooked Whitewater land deal, Hillary's 1,000 percent return on cattle futures, etc. One thing Obama should say: "I would never have sex with that woman. Not ever."
Jim | 02.21.07 06:45 PM
It would seem that David Geffen is the latest member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. Wait until the Clintonistas start playing the "woman" card. I believe that the majority of Dems do not want Hillary nominated for one reason......she will not win.

Have you people been educated?? Some, not all of you, really need to learn how to speak, even if it's only writen word. As for the last person who commented, yes, there are plenty of democrats posting here, and you could tell if you actually read all the comments. We don't need Hillary Clinton in office, we need someone who will stand up and speak the truth. As for Mr. Wolfson, he is a moron. How can anyone blame somebody for speaking their opinion, even when that person has a valid point? Mr. Clinton was a great president and he has my respect, that doesn't mean his wife automatically qualifies, nor does that mean that they are squeaky clean. It's time for change. Go Obama!!

Hillary Clinton is the "lady Macbeth" of American politics. She is trying to become the first 'Hot-House' sheltered candidate to win the presidency. Shillery will be well advised to take steps to abandon her sense of entitlement to the Presidency and run for the office and cease her whine.
A. ROSARIO | 02.21.07 08:05 PM
Both Senators Clinton and Obama have not passed any meaningful legislaition, and both promised not to run for higher office while being elected to Senate seats. Please tell me why Hillary, whose past is still exposed as a vindictive First Lady who ran over a cop in New York never even apologized or stopped, and Obama can't figure out what race he is.
The only real support both are getting are from the media who are trying to kiss each ones butt to gain access during and after the campaign. Neither one ranks high on Second Amendment rights, illegal immigraition, and national security. Our country many terroists acts while dealing with the former rapist in Chief's sexual screw-ups.
It is time to elect good people such as Hunter or Tancredo who have no special interest groups kissing their butts, and stand on issue with moral character.

Candidly, very shocked at the apparent ineptness of the Clinton campaign on this! Think that Hillary was stunned early on when she was forced to announce early, and she just seems to be off balance, AND, THE CAMPAIGN HAS JUST STARTED. The question is: DOES SHE HAVE THE RIGHT STUFF TO RUN FOR NATIONAL OFFICE?? Time will tell!
Jack | 02.21.07 08:44 PM
I was a little puzzled by the remark that Obama isn't used to getting good columns from Maureen Dowd. Exactly who does? She's got a bogus public personna where she pretends she's the "prom queen bitch from hell". Yeah, she's made a career of it, but a lot of people have made a career out of doing offensive things. It's so childish. Who cares what she says? No intelligent person.
Erick Blair | 02.21.07 08:46 PM
How interesting that it took a fight among demo-
crats to jog the media into detailing at least a
few of the crimes and other lapses, ethical and
moral, of the Clintons, husband and wife. In-
teresting, too, that in reporting this contest,
The Times is careful not to repeat the bill of
particulars, lest some more people be reminded of
the facts of the debate. It seems truth will out.

Oh my, someone dared speak the truth about the Clintons and so Hillary whined for them to stop it. Looks like something a dictator would demand. Silence all freedom of speech, take all the profits of others and pass it around.... very communistic.... Everyone should be able to speak truthfully and an HONEST candidate should be able to stand up to the facts of their history.
The Clintons are the biggest crooks this nation has ever seen in power. This nation is still recovering from the circumstances of the Clintons in the white house. Let the past be our guide. Never let a clinton near the white house again.
Pamela J | 02.21.07 09:05 PM
Bravo Mr. Geffen... speaking the truth. Clinton kept terrorists at bay?
Computer says no. Bush & Clinton are two sides of the same coin they have both fostered, nurtured and actually harbored 'terrorists.'
I have nothing against Obama either and I sincerely hope he can keep the rest of the wolves at bay. I always root for the underdog. Well, not always.
Q | 02.21.07 09:08 PM
That last comment was patently absurd and historically innacurate. During the 90s, we were hit with repeated terrorist strikes, beginning with the bombing of the Twin Towers; finally culminating with their destruction on 911, just months after the Clintons left office.
All through those years, Bill Clinton did nothing about it. The economy was riding off of the uptick in the 10 year economic cycle, not because Bill Clinton did anything to cause it. On the contrary, it did extremely well despite his increased taxation and overregulation. Please, spare US another Hillbilly Soprano in the White House!
Jose | 02.21.07 09:10 PM
The Goppers and MSM are sooooo stupid, they don't fave the faintest idea that all this "namecalling" is part of the game plan to reclaim the White House and retain control of Congress. You could shout it from the roof tops and they still wouldn't hear you. What's the ancient expression, "Like shooting fish in a barrel."? Clinton-Obama in 2008! Vote Demokrat! Vote Early & Often!! NeoComDem | 02.21.07 09:10 PM
Legally elected, good ecomomy, what in the hell are you smoking. Let's not forget that Willie lied to a Federal Grand Jury. He lost his license to pratice law in every state and the terrorist were blowing up things, like the World Trade Center, while he and Monica were staining the carpets in the oval office. Too much "happy jack" and Kool Aid.
Wal Mart Shopper | 02.21.07 09:11 PM
Kept terrorists at bay?! So that means the first attempt on the World Trade Center (1993) did not take place on Billy's watch? Oh, that's right, it was Hillary's turn to wear the pants, right? Sure, the economy may have been good back in those years, but it's a lot better now than it ever was during BJ's turn in office.Let's not forget that Billy's tremendous economy was beginning to turn into a recession by the time he was loading the White House Furniture. It's a good thing we got a good pres in the office to turn the economy right again and fight a war that Clinton helped start by letting Bin Laden go.
It's about time the Clinton wuss clan got a taste of their own medicine. They like to play with the big dogs until they get bit. Then they run to mommy with their tail between their legs. I'd sure like to see more of that. So many uninformed Americans are misled primarily by their own ignorance and misplaced pride that they fail to put some effort into finding out the truth about our candidates.
The US will continue to follow outrageous paths to the extreme left until we all wake from thisidiotic mindset of catering to illegal aliens and radicals bent on putting an end to the American way of life.
Paul Ochoa | 02.21.07 09:22 PM
I cannot believe there are so many folks that fail to understand who the Clintons are. If I were Obama, I'd hire someone (at a very high rate) to watch my back. Former President Clinton and his wife know one thing...win at all costs. In their entire time in the limelight, no one has beaten them at their game.

Let's face it: The Clintons are as corrupt as they come, and especially Hillary. She cannot be trusted. Period.
Plus, I agree with Geffen: I am sick and tired of having 2 royal families run this country: the Bushes and the Clintons. It's time for new blood. This is supposed to be a democracy, with a 2 party system...not a 2 family rule.
It nauseates me even thinking about a continuation to this bitter partisanship in our leadership. There is no more polarizing figure among the Democrats than Hillary Clinton. As long as we have a Bush or Clinton in the White House we will have this bitter partisan divide. It's time for a fresh start. I can't believe the Democrats, after so long criticizing Bush for dividing the country and not uniting it, would even think about nominating the bitter, polarizing Hillary.
I'll also say this much: I am a lifelong Republican, but I would consider voting for Obama, and I never thought I'd say that about a Democratic candidate for president. He's that good.

Ah, the whinings of the Dumb, the Dishonest and the Deceived. The issue in the 2000 election is why was Florida called for Gore early. When Dan Rather called Florida early, the thousands of Republicans in West Florida did not vote. That is most flagrant election fraud since Joe Kennedy delivered Illinois in 1960 election. Why is that not in the history books?? It is established by all sources. All this whining about the three dwarfs. What is the difference between Dem primaries and high school student body elections? Very little. May God save America.

How in the world did NY elect hillary????
when bill ran and won his first race as governor of arkansas... hillary kept her last name... hillary rodham... THEN he ran for re-election and LOST.... then after 4 yrs he ran again and this time hillary had her name as hillary clinton...and he won..... then she kept that name thru the presidential process.. but after he was elected she changed to hillary rodham clinton...
when they went to washington hillary got an office to work on issues.. SHE sent her child AWAY to a private school there... jimmy carter was shocked and said so...his wife raised a child there... also carter talked about hillary could have hired people to do that issue ... so that was clearly a power and ego issue for hillary no matter about her child being raised by others..
now once bill was out of office... all of a sudden there was a senate seat coming available in ny.... hillary then starting saying she was a new yorker and then the clintons Left arkanasas behind fast.... clearly arkansas was USED by the clintons....just for THEIR power...I guess when they go back they have to go back in the dead of nite or get run out with sticks and rotten maters.....
and the clintons pushed nafta and gatt thru congress for the rich totally against REAL democrats...
NOW how in the world would new yorkers elect hillary with this history... UNBELIEVABLE!! they will not get any votes from arkansas or the border states there that know how they USED the arkansas people... they are indeed rotten to the core!!

I think the best strategy for Barak Obama would be to take a deep breath and ponder the way Abe Lincoln would handled such a scurrilous attack. I think Lincoln might (in one or two light-hearted lines) have simply expressed his confidence in people's ability to see through such ignorant bullying and bluster.
The Clintons' aggresiveness certainly is coming out early.

happyjack,
What do you mean, was legally elected? Bush was elected, both times, legally, like it or not. He may not have gotten the popular vote, but, he got the electoral college, which is what counts. And yes, we should keep the electoral college, it helps balance power from a few mega states, to every state being important. I am from a small state, that already gets ignored enough, without the electoral college, we wouldn't even matter.

It's not Obama's fault that the Clintons have . . . "luggage" that they'll have lost. Let the Clintons answer to their own questions. I smell early desperation. Hill and Bill up to their necks and flagging their arms to Obama, "Hey B.O.! Come and have a swim in our homestyle muck!" The left is self-destructing? Were you not watching last November? The centrist now rule, and whoever is less corrupt, wins.
Let's get Al Gore back in the mix. Popular as you think he is, Elizabeth Dole has a better chance of winning the presidency than Hillary or Obama. Bring on Rudy, I hate his conservative views, but rather he be the man in charge, face mask in place, going thru the dust of 9/11, risking his own life, to believe that he could LEAD his New Yorker's out of trouble than any McCain or Bush... leaders LEAD, and he was proven.
I'm no conservative, but when the chips are down, give me an Al Gore of 2007 over a Clinton, Obama or Kerry. Give me someone ready to LEAD, ready to bring back the American SPIRIT, which we have lost since November 2000.
I'd rather have an Eisenhower than a Humphrey. But give me someone who left in defeat, and champions his cause, a la Al Gore. He now believes in his cause and is DEDICATED.
I hate the current cast of candidates. The wimpiest, most gender/current opinion NEUTERED of all. And don't ever be led again by someone who's out to settle a family feud for his father, who was smart enough to listen to Colin Powell, and not brush him off.

The now wealthy Clintons do seem to be very smart, and considering Bill was the POTUS for 8 years, and Hillary is now a very powerful Senator from a very important state, it is only natural that people of lower standing would resent and envy them.
I've met Obama, women really seem to like him, they get all excited when they are near him. Bill has the same effect. I'm not sure that will be enough to get Obama elected. I think Hillary will bring many new voters to the polls and unless some manufactured scandal derails her campaign, Hillary will undoubtedly be the next President of the U.S., unless Bush and Cheney are impeached and subsequently imprisoned for their war crimes, then I suppose Nancy Pelosi will be the first female U.S. president. Either way, I'll be deliriously happy.

Hapyjack . . . Clinton kept terrorists at bay???? What are you smoking, dude? Does the first attack on the Twin Trad Towers ring a bell? God, sheeple like you are scary.

The Clintons are weak against terrorists, yet strong against the unborn. In fact, they released terrorists from prison, along with cocaine dealers and tax cheats like Mark Rich. They sold China advanced military and communication technology that gives the Chi-Coms the power to hit the USA with nuclear missiles if they so choose. When Osama Bin Laden was offered to the Clintons on 3 seperate occasions by the Govt. of Sudan, they turned the offer down.
Now we hear from Hillary herself how Bill "fooled" her, Suha Arafat fooled her, Bush "fooled" her, but the real "fools" will be those who vote for her. "It Takes A Village Of Idiots" To Still Believe In The Clintons. Viva Giulliani!

(and the list continues - too long to continue here)

God bless Mr. David Geffen.

The Clintons did not have anything to do with the economy all of the changes came from two years after they took office and rep. lead the way with tax cuts, the feds cut interest rates in the face of economic hardships to spur the ecomony back.
The crime rate was reduced because of Rudy in NY, It's about time someone said something critical of Hillary, What has she actually done in the Senate other then bitch.. Take off the drunk beer goggles and look at what she has done on her own, Nothing.

Hillary (If I woulda known then what I know now...) Clinton will go down quick once she is faced with hardball questions. B.O. was "anti-war" before "anti-war" was cool. And B.O. has a much better delivery of platitudes.

Obama should be careful because when people stand in clintons way bad things happen. Kisses to Ian

Be afraid. Hillary has 900 FBI files.

Surprise, surprise for Hillary ! She can no longer count on the Jewish vote because they ,for the most part, know the truth now : The Clintons do not give a hoot about the Jewish community. They just care about themselves . They are and have been users all along behind the mask of phony left wing ideology.

Hillary Clinton is a selfish and stupid person. She’s accomplished nothing. Nothing original or insightful leaves her mouth. She pays for political endorsements. She mutters the same old liberal talking points.
It’s tiring to hear her, her husband, and everything Clinton. We’re at war and this country needs a hero as its next president. So far, Rudy is the only superhuman candidate. We should demand commander-in-chief excellence and not settle for a Hillary.

Typical. Blame is often misdirected by the socialists. Why? Easy. It's all about taking out the competition for self gratification and political gain. Neither end up looking good.
This is going to be as much fun to watch as a huge storm rolling in. I just hope everyone's home is left standing in the end.
Give to charities, don't volunteer your money to government by voting for either of these fools. Charities create jobs, have an actual purpose in helping people and the money you donate is watched carefully. The government doesn't need your money and you're never sure where it goes. The more money we are "taxed" for "the greater good", the more power the government steals directly from us and our futures while we're not looking.

Ask any PAC and they will tell you why they make political contributions – to ensure access. The Dreamworks guys have and will continue to support Clinton, Obama and all the other donk candidates to some degree. Their fear is that Hillary cannot wil. In the current political climate, her "moderate" record may prevent her from winning the nomination. If nominated, her negatives may be too high to win, especially if Ralph Nader enters the race.
We are a long way from the 2008 presidential race. Hollywood may just be hedging their bets.

Maybe real Democrats will now realize their best ticket for 08 will be Edwards-Pelosi.

This episode is utterly two-faced. Of course the Clintons lie with ease, they're politicians, and liberal ones at that (liberal lies are harder to detect). And Geffen is not upset that Clinton pardoned a convicted criminal, just that he didn't pardon his convicted criminal.

As a New Yorker, I hate the idea that so many people from other states think of Hillary as an effective senator acting on behalf of the people of New York. She has always worked on behalf of Bill and herself.
She works full time at accumulating money, power, and the needed political chits for her ascencion. And when anyone gets in the way of that, watch out.
Should anyone care to point out the monumental
legislation that she has been a driving force behind to refute the above, please let us know.
Richard | 02.22.07 09:12 AM
Hillary was President for eight years, thus she ought not to be permitted to run again to the detriment of the country.
Lisa | 02.22.07 09:38 AM
"Do democrats ever post comments here? really people, so vicious. The previous Clinton administration had a great economy, kept terrorist at bay and, oh yes, was ACTUALLY LEGALLY ELECTED!"
LOL... someone please tell me this was sarcasm. Are Clinton-lovers that ignorant that they forget Bin Laden plotted 9/11 since 1995, did Khobar, Kenya, Cole on Clinton's watch and still he was not stopped.
Patrick | 02.24.07 04:25 AM
Hillary wants the war stopped before she takes office in 09,What is the reason for this??Answer she will NOT have a military to defend this country. What right minded solider would serve under Hillary(I HATE THE MILITARY)Clinton. And who in the world would enlist knowing Hillary is President. That's why she wants the war ended before she hopefully NEVER become's a Commander in Chief. Can we in this country be so STUPID to elect a person of this standard.I'm ashamed to be a New Yorker knowning my state started her political career.
