Just asking...

What happens to the presidential race if there's a recession?

The D's will have that much more of a wind at their back for the Prez race.

The President takes the blame for the recession (right or wrong, he always does... ask Carter and Bush I)... and you'll see the Repubs running even further away from him and Dems trying to pin them to him...

If the Congress raises taxes and there is a recession, it will hurt the Dems (though the taxes will not have caused the recession since they won't be assessed until 2008).

If they do not raise taxes and there is a recession, it will hurt the Reps.

It's looking more like a landslide win for the Dems every day.

I disagree with t's opinion. A recession could be used by the GOP to argue that big government and high taxes are hurting the economy. Instead of blaming Bush (who's responsible for the 7% annual increase in Gov spending since 2001, the liberal Democratic Congress becomes the target.

Romney, Giuliani or McCain can rail against pork barrel politics and tax and spend liberals. This issue will clarify the differences of thet two parties on economic policy. I'd have to say this could be a godsend for the GOP.

Governor Romney wins in a landslide.

I was just thinking of the same question!

Big wind at the Dems' backs. The Dems will drive as far left short of communism without any danger to their chances in the primaries and not a great deal more in the general. No discernible difference in the GOP primary field because no one has anything resembling an economic policy. Advantage: Dems.

I once thought that this was going to be an economy election. That was wishful thinking, for I assumed then that we would be out of Iraq by 2008. I think there are serious concerns about the economy in the electorate regardless of if there is a recession, but if there is indeed one, then it may be something that Democrats can capitalize on or Republicans can use to shift the focus from Iraq.

It's STILL the economy, stupid.

People might want to vote for a smart business man who is good at turning things around...
