More Fred Thompson Buzz
He now graces the cover of the American Spectator's website. (Run, Fred, Run! screams the Spec's Washington Prowler).
We're skeptical.
But -- it doesn't seem to us like Thompson's circle of advisers (or Thompson himself) are eager to bat down these rumors.

What about Fred Thompson as Rudy's VP? Almost sounds perfect?
1) Ambassador to the Hill
2) Southerner
3) Known quantity
4) Stabs the oppo with a velvet glove
5) no threat to the top dog
any takers ?
Joe | 02.28.07 12:42 PM
If Rudy gets the nomination then he will need someone from evangelical right to be his running mate to have even a remote chance of beating Dems. Only a ticket like Rudy-Falwell will save Rudy.
Matt | 02.28.07 01:12 PM
Matt,
You miss the whole concept of a Rudy nomination. Independent votes (lost in '06) will return in large enough numbers to offset any loss from "right wingers" unwilling to vote for Rudy. (And I think you're overestimating the loss of conservatives.)
Giulliani-Thompson: Where do I sign up?!!
jeanneb | 03.01.07 10:08 AM
Matt, are you wrong this issue, or every issue? I think your broad categorization of evangelical voters is simple-minded at best or categorically wrong at worst.
If Hillary wins the nomination, there's 45% of the country who won't vote for her off the bat. Capturing the 5.1% more will be the not impossible challenge.
Chris | 03.01.07 10:11 AM
I would work my butt off for this man! PLEASE Thompson! Please run!!
How about Thompson/Rice '08?
It could totally work!
dsmith | 03.01.07 10:11 AM
Living in a state that's generally considered the buckle of the Bible belt, I know, no matter what the polls say, of no one who considers him or herself a Christian or evangelical who plans on supporting Rudy.
He is too inflexibly liberal on homosexual rights, gun control, and abortion. He seems like your typical arrogant, Eastern Establishment, Yankee. It won't matter who his VP is because people won't expect Rudy to change his liberal positions on policy, and may even expect him to promote those policies. Christian evangelicals won't see any difference in values between him and Hillary. They'll just stay at home.
Gary | 03.01.07 10:56 AM
Gary: You come off a bit like the apocryphal Manhattanite who doesn't understand why Nixon won (in '72) because she didn't know anyone who voted for him.
Either that or, like Matt, a Dem who's scared enough of Rudy to try and create an impression that the darn Christianists will never support him so no one else should.
Telling that a post on Thompson has become a "Unelectable Rudy" comment thread (again). I think a Giulliani/Thompson ticket would be formidable, and that's one reason why the agitprop-posters are pooh-poohing it.
Jerry | 03.01.07 12:49 PM
I'll hate to be faced with the choice e.g. between Giuliani and HRC: but, in spite of being a Catholic who thinks pro-abortion rights C. politicians ought to be publicly and forcefully denied the Sacrament, I'd vote for him not her. Fred Thompson would make the necessity significantly less painful.
marc | 03.01.07 01:40 PM
It is not an "apocryphal" Manhattanite who was shocked Nixon won in 1972 because the Manhattanite didn't know a single Nixon voter. It was an actual person: Pauline Kael, legendary New Yorker film critic.

Chris | 03.01.07 05:55 PM
I'm a born again Christian. If its a choice between Hillary and Rudy I'll have to go for Rudy. He's the better of two bad choices. I will not stay home and help give it to Hillary, however I've been hoping Fred would run and am pleased to hear he is thinking of running.Rudy had the balls to tear up a $10M check the Saudi Prince tried to give him after 9-11, so I trust him to keep us safe. would much prefer a Christian that has that same brass and I think Freds the guy. Would love to help get him elected in whatever way I can.
judy | 03.03.07 12:02 AM
dsmith writes: "How about Thompson/Rice '08? It could totally work!"
The main problem with that ticket is that Condi, if we take her at her word, is not interested. I think a Thompson/Steele ticket would be a lot more doable.
It has balance: white/black, south/northeast, older/younger and Protestant/Catholic.
And it sends a strong message that the party of Lincoln is in touch with its roots and its future.

Forget Rudy! Just RUN! FRED! RUN! How about
FRED& ZELL IN '08???
ost | 03.08.07 07:47 PM
I think there are some parts of that immigration survey that are just a little bit misleading. For instance, a grade of D for amnesty issues, but the only two cited are a positive 40 pts for an H1-B visa situation, and -96 pts for voting for some amnesty provisions for Nicaraguan and Cuban dissidents. That seems a little skewed to me.
As for the overall point, Go Fred ! I'd vote for him any day, and twice when I'm in Chicago (or dead). And while I may not have total agreement with Rudy on some issues, I support him over any of the current Democrat choices.
JB | 03.09.07 07:38 AM
fred thompson will be able to do what the wishywashy mccain cannot do.forget rudy also he is a bonifide liberal by any definition.rememember ronald reagan, well fred thompson can and will do the same thing.I am now excited!
kenneth c setser | 03.10.07 10:18 PM
I've been on the sidelines mildly frustrated with the choice of GOP choices. The thought of Fred Thompson wanting to run for president has gotten my hopes up for 2008! I hope he runs, finally somebody I can get exited for!
Mark | 03.12.07 01:04 AM
A Thompson-Giuliani ticket would be much more palatable to me than the reverse
Mike | 03.12.07 10:08 AM
Fred Thompson should be at the top of the ticket or he should stay home. The America we know and value can not survive eight more years with an insider at the top, and make no mistake about it, Rudy is an insider. I watched Thompson closely while in congress and was suprised, pleasantly, by his conduct and possitions on the important issues. Of course, like The Peanut Farmer Jimmy Carter, he will have to accept nomination to the CFR once in office, but I think his moral values do and will continue to reflect mainstream America. Remember what Will Rodgers said: "People usually get the government they deserve". While we may "deserve" HRC a true democrat, I would hope and vote for Fred Thompson, a person for our time.
John M. | 03.12.07 10:18 AM
Fred Thompson is the Republican unity candidate. FDT is the candidate for 2008 who will win and lead America in this very dangerous time coming.
aprpeh | 03.12.07 11:45 AM
I would be thrilled of to vote and campaign for Fred Thompson. I think he's a better bet to defeat the DEMON-CRATS in the next presidential election. Even if Gingrich plans to run, I will still prefer FDT. I think he'll bring unity among the perplexed, and divided Republicans.
james zandy | 03.12.07 01:05 PM
Fred Thompson would make a fine President, and I pray he RUNS!!!!!!!!!!
Rev. Lee Thomson | 03.12.07 01:43 PM
Its about time some one like this man runs and is elected to the office of President. He stands for something worthwhile, I can tell by his voting record. We need him and now is the time.
Joe Brown | 03.12.07 04:57 PM
When I heard the suggestion of Fred Thompson for President, I immediately knew he was it. We've got to get him active.
Roy W Hutchinson | 03.12.07 05:19 PM

How about Fred Thompson and J C Watts?
bill antrim | 03.12.07 07:48 PM
F. Thompson/J.C. Watts. Not THAT'S the best idea that I have EVER HEARD! It's about time we have someone who will stand for the people of AMERICA! I do believe we need to help others who are not able to take card of themselves. However, I also believe that philosophy needs to start RIGHT HERE IN THE GOOD OL' US of A! Let's start by making our country, our people, our land, once again the LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE!
The demon-seeds, ooops. I mean the Democrats, want to just keep giving billions of $$$ to everyone, everywhere in the world. We need conservatives, with a backbone, intestinal fortitude, morals, who will help our people, right here at home.
al | 03.12.07 09:48 PM
Fred can win. The race is over when he enters. He is articulate, but a man's man. A little John Wayne and a lot of Ronald Reagan. He says what he means and means what he says. He will not accept a VP bid. As far as his VP: not Rudy, not Rice, Romney - possibly, Steele - Maybe. Needs a geographical balance - Romney will do that, so will Steele. What about Powell?
Thom | 03.13.07 01:10 AM
Just talking about this Sunday night here on the Left Coast with fellow conservative friends and we all agreed there was no one to get excited about and many we know are planning to stay home. This changes everything. Thompson is ideologically sound, whether one agrees with him or not. He believes what he says. As a man who has moved in and out out politics, he's demonstrated that he doesn't need a political life( like Al Gore does, e.g.) He's a man of ideas, not ambition. We haven't seen that in some time. If he runs, I'm putting a bumper sticker on the FRONT of my car: RUN, HILLARY, RUN!!
Margaret | 03.13.07 01:20 AM
How do we contact Fred Thompson, so we can urge him to run?
lonnie | 03.13.07 10:07 AM
I would be thrilled if Fred ran for President. He doesn't have a political agenda...I think he sincerly wants to help this country..and I think he's a man who can. Please run Fred, I'm one but I'm behind you all the way. And lots of ones add up! Think wisely your choice for a running mate.
sarah | 03.13.07 11:15 AM
Rudy or Romney either one would be a good running mate for Thompson, but I'm thinking Hagel
Mike | 03.13.07 03:04 PM
Tompson is the best possibility by far!
The dream ticket its Fred Thompson and J.C. Watts!
Darrin Kirkus | 03.13.07 04:39 PM
I'm thrilled that Fred is considering running. I wouldn't stay home and not vote for anything. Even if Fred wasn't running, I'd die before I handed the race over to Hillary by staying home. But as one of his former constituents from TN, I've always really admired him. He would be a good leader for our country. I've always thought he'd make a great president. Hopefully we'll get that opportunity.
Missy | 03.13.07 06:22 PM

A down to earth republican that keep the country safe and on true course in troubling times.
I pray that the lord guide your thinking
on this important matter.
I can only hope he does what he needs to do.

athanasios | 03.21.07 05:30 PM
It's really about confidence these days, isn't it? Don't we need someone with a heart, some style and lots of integrity? These missing Washington elements are embodied in Fred Thompson. I'm not a political animal, but even I would work on his behalf.
Bruce | 03.21.07 08:59 PM
Dear Mr.Thompson,
America is calling, we need you to be Our President,Please run.
Ken Clark | 03.22.07 09:40 AM
Maybe I am a throw back, but I would cry tears of happiness for a Thompson/Powell ticket. If anyone can get Colin Powell back into the game, it is probably Fred Thompson.
Michelle | 03.24.07 12:04 PM
I came to this site looking for an email address for Fred Thompson. I, too, want him to run. If he doesn't, I'll just vote for Hillary. I'm convinced there's not one other Republican already declared that can win this election, so in the absence of a real winner, a vote for Hillary will keep Obama out hopefully.
Louanna Fitts | 03.25.07 08:57 PM
I was always very impressed with JC Watt in Congress, and wished he'd run for higher office. JC Watt and Fred Thompson - the very thought gives this conservative goosebumps!! (Rudy, thanks but no thanks.)

kenneth niles | 04.12.07 10:58 AM
The goosebumps are all over my body with the thought of Fred Thompson running in 08!
I, like many of you, have been wandering in the desert looking for someone who could lead me to an oasis of cool refreshing water. He is standing in the wings right now! Let's get him to step on stage; and bring the house down on the Democrats!
Just for thought; I haven't come across anyone floating the idea of Thompson/Hunter as a dream ticket.
If you haven't heard of Duncan Hunter; then you need to read up on where he stands and how he's voted!
These two would be a force of nature against our enemies; both foreign and domestic (and you know who I mean).
William T. Wright | 04.18.07 02:30 AM
Former Senator Fred Thompson is far too dignified and honorable to settle (stoop) as Guilliani's wing man; remember, the lukewarm are spewn from the mouth - we would not want Mr. Thompson getting caught up in an administration doomed from the get-go by Rudy's "almost-conservatism". (I echo what one posted earlier: a Thompson/Powell ticket. Wouldn't that be the ultimate dream team?!) Whoever the running mate, please, please, please Mr. Thompson, bring the life back to our exhausted party!! FRED THOMPSON FOR PRESIDENT 2008
tonya | 05.23.07 03:19 PM
McCain, Guilliani, or Romni for President? Tully, you have to be kidding! The thought of any of these guys becoming our next president reminds me of something that my wife recently witnessed. While I was at work one day this wee, my wife took our children to the local zoo, when another patron began to shout, "Hey! Look! That elephant just crapped another mule!" If any of these guys become our next president, the line that distinquishes the Republican and the Democratic parties will be blurred even further than they are now. We need a presidential candidate like Fred Thompson who is a proven leader. I look for him to run and I expect him to win.
James | 05.25.07 01:15 AM
Lets keep this real simple. Fred Thompson needs Conde Rice for his running mate. Thats a combination that can't lose.
Steve Nunes | 05.28.07 07:26 PM
Gary is right. Here in the midwest, we feel the same about Rudy. We like him, but ABSOLUTELY cannot vote an abortion supporter into the white house, no matter how much we like him. He will not get the nom because of this. You under-estimate the power of pro life in this country. Just because the pro abortion people have loud voices, does not mean they are the majority.
I am for Fred.
Gretchen | 05.30.07 04:54 PM
I forgot my VP.
What about Thompson/Keyes?
Alan Keyes will mop up any VP the dems could possibly come up with. The dude is SHARP!
Gretchen | 05.30.07 04:58 PM

Fred (filntstone) Thompson #4

RUN Fred RUN!! As a former Tennesseen I would vote for Fred in a heartbeat! Am now living in Florida but still a Fred Thompson beliver.
max | 06.02.07 10:02 AM
If Thompson will put up strong issues, like: Foreign aid only to nations that don't hate us and foreign aid only in the form of credits (no cash) spendable in the US, he could win onthat issue alone
DeeBee | 06.02.07 11:03 AM
I hope Fred runs. I do not vote because there has not been anyone worth voting for. But I would get registered to vote if Fred Thompson runs. He stands for what America is.
Harlan | 06.02.07 06:47 PM
As a registered Republican who has almost given up hope for a subtantial candidate, I'm pinning my hopes on Fred Thompson. I have followed his political career for some time now, and truly believe he is the 'shining light' at the end of this seemingly endless tunnel. Mr. Thompson, please run, we all need some hope.
Carol
Carol | 06.02.07 07:45 PM
I've yet to see any candidate or potential candidates that has a solution for trying to stuff the "Evil Spirits" back into Pandora's box. When we knowingly take a bite out of the forbidden fruit then we should expect to suffer the consequinces. No one person is really going to make any difference at this point in time whether it be republican, democrat or independent. As long as they can keep us devided and arguing amongst ourselves "The powers that be" will continue to be.

Just watched the Senate on C-SPAN2. They are literally planning to give our beautiful country away. Sen. Bernie Sanders of all people, told about big companies laying 1000's employees off in anticipation of the cheap labor coming from Mexico. I call it treason!!!! We weren't told about the North American Union Or the SPP or any of their other secret plans. We can't wait until the 2008 election-what can we do NOW? FRED - please advise us. Bonnie|06.06.07

Thompson's actually electable. I like him. I think a lot of people will like him. Enough people having faith in their perceptions will put this wonderful guy in the White House. Thompson will be a magnificent President. I'm fond of Tancredo and Hunter; but I'll stay home if the primary goes to Giuliani, Romney, or McCain. McCain packs the gear to be president; but not the self control. Giuliani's a fascist; plain and simple. Romney lacks the backbone; he's a nice guy; but he doesn't project "Commander in Chief". Fred Thompson's got it all. I haven't missed an election in 34 years. If it ain't Fred Thompson; Tom Tancredo, or Duncan Hunter; I'm staying home in '08 and loading a lot of centerfire. We may need it in '09.
Tom Browne | 06.07.07 12:33 AM
Fred Thompson is the only (potential) candidate worth getting excited about. I've conducted an informal poll of my own locally. My hard core Democrat friends aren't excited at all about their choices in that party, but they DO like Fred Thompson. Generally speaking, he's the only Republican that they would support. Of course the Republicans like him because of his views.
Although I don't agree with Giuliani on his abortion stance, he may make a good vice-presidential running mate for Thompson. He's liberal enough to pull in some of the votes from the typical Democrat voter who won't accept another Clinton in the Whitehouse.
A Thompson / Giuliani ticket would be hard to beat, but it wouldn't work the other way around.
Thompson DOES need to make the announcement though. Although he has loyal supporters, enthusiasm for a candidate is hard to maintain if that candidate doesn't join the race. The election IS still a long way off though.
The best thing about Thompson is his no BS attitude. Which candidate would you pick on national security issues? If I were a foreign leader sitting across the table from Fred Thompson, and he told be to get my country in order, or the U.S. would turn it into a parking lot, I'd believe him. I DON'T think any of the other candidates would be taken seriously enough.
Charlie | 06.10.07 12:50 PM
Fred Thompson, brings all of America hope for the future. Finally, someone who will speak up, and not be afraid of offending the people who need everything sugar coated.
Fred Thompson & McCain 08???
Shawn Scott | 06.10.07 06:10 PM
Fred Thompson appears to be the only candidate(potentially) the Reps have that I could vote for.
The Dems have some honorable, capable men; unfortunatly, none of them will even get a shot at the nomination. I desperately want a Conservative Libertarian candidate; of course I have other unrealizable pipe-dreams.
chuckster55 | 06.11.07 11:28 PM
I vote for Thompson / Watts 2008. We need to keep the communists (i mean democrats) from capturing the job of "Commander and Chief". HilldaBeast and/or Hussain Obama would be a disaster.
Randy | 06.14.07 01:54 PM
just run. you have my vote.
dave | 06.16.07 06:35 PM
Fred Thompson as Prez and Romney because of his business accumen as VP. Pefect ticket!
mrsmal | 06.18.07 12:36 PM
Why drag Giuliani into this? Who wants HIM? I think the nation wants Fred Thompson because they DON'T WANT people like Giuliani. Actually, America has outgrown the simple-minded "ticket-balancing" act. We need a firm, resolved administration who work together, not at odds. America is thirsting for a leader who will stand up to Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Bush and Mr. Spector and all the rest of these elitist, corporate lap-dogs. Honest, hardworking, down-to-earth Americans are fed up with this oligarchy and its corporate dictatorship.
mmorris | 06.27.07 07:35 PM
Fred Thompson knows how to be a nice Southern Gentleman. He is a good guy and close enough to being called a conservative. But so are a lot of other people based on their positions. But for heaven sakes he is not Presidential Material. He just isn't based on the record!! His positions match up but his service, experience (or lack thereof) and motivation-drive factors clearly DO NOT. Arthur Branch doesn't have the resume either. It's obvious some of us haven't been doing our reading responsibilities. For a POTUS he falls way short, way short especially for the day and age in which we live--the demands are too high to risk it on a Fred. "Image" IS NOT everything. He was a lackluster Senator. Somebody else served as his source of motivation--you can see it through out his life. Somebody else offered him everyone of his career opportunities. He was an appointee because of someone he knew who LIKED him. He's smart but hasn't applied himself to developing personal excellence wherever he's been. He could have been so much more over the years but he didn't do the quality time nor effort. Most of what he became was merely handed to him or he was shoved an coaxed in a direction.
You'll see for yourself, only if you read for yourself. I got started on my due diligence when too many people I respect called Fred an empty shirt or an empty suit. Nice, nice man but way below the demands of what the country needs--wake up and smell the facts. Please!( and I've been nice about it)
PS- time is short, but ask me for sources if you really care.

I am a well educated, therefore Republican, guy with more that 17 years experience in the Middle East ( 3 in Abu Dhabi- 12 in Saudi Arabia, and 2 + in Iraq). I read, write and speak Arabic (not bad for a southern West Virgina country boy). I would be happy to share some actual and real knowledge of the arabs, Iraqis, and Muslims with Mr. Thompson. I have contacts who have the same experiences, and background as I, and who understand that most of the "conventional knowledge" of the Middle East is far from realistic.
Best Regards & bring home the win Mr. Fred.
