McCain: We Won't Meet Fundraising Goals

GRAFTON CO., NH -- Sen. John McCain said his presidential campaign would not meet its fundraising goals this quarter, and his campaign advisers acknowledged that ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney may wind up raising more.

"We're going to pay a price for it because we got a late start," McCain told reporters in New Hampshire. "We're not going to meet the goals we had." He later said he did not know whether Romney would outpace him, but his advisers did not downplay that possibility. They also did not rule out finishing first.

McCain contends that his exploratory committee's opening in December and the rush of the busy holiday season did not allow his campaign to begin fundraising in earnest until January. But once that month began, owing in part to a busy Senate schedule, McCain attended only two fundraisers and only two in February. There are twenty scheduled for all of this month, and another twenty in April.

"These are moments, none of which at the end of the day impact winning the nomination," said John Weaver, McCain's chief strategist. "We're on track to do that. Every campaign would trade places with us. We wouldn't trade places with anyone else."

Some Republicans estimate that Romney, whose network of friends, business contacts and party donors is expansive, could accumulate more than $30 or even $35 million this quarter. McCain is not likely to raise in excess of $30M, according to Republicans outside his campaign who have been given the unofficial estimate. Neither Weaver nor any other McCain aide would hazard a guess about their first quarter tally.

A Romney spokesman noted that McCain had recruited more major Bush donors than any other candidate, and possesses a large direct mail list from his earlier presidential campaigns. The Romney spokesman said that McCain was trying to artificially lower expectations.

If Romney reports a higher fundraising tally on April 15, he'll not be faulted for bragging about his strength after what his aides acknowledge was a rough start to his campaign.

Both campaigns agree that two numbers due by mid-July -- six months worth of receipts and the amount of money remaining in their accounts -- are better diagnostic indicators of their candidate's viability.

Romney, in particular, will be burdened with the expectation that he ought to keep pace with McCain and end the half-year with at least $30 to $40 million in the bank. Both campaigns worry about their high burn rates. They both pay the salaries of more than 100 full-time staff members and numerous consultants. Romney even has several field organizers in Florida, placed there when the campaign presumed that the Florida Republican Party would schedule a straw poll for the fall. They ultimately did not. Damn McCain-Fiengold act!!!!

Dan Roll | 03.24.07 09:11 PM

McCain should drop out now, he has no base in the GOP and the Dems don't trust him either, he is unelectable!

THOMAS STRATFORD | 03.24.07 09:15 PM

Bye. You are to old and to liberal.

idgaf | 03.24.07 09:19 PM

Dear John.
The reason you do not have the money you need is because you let the Conservative base down with your anti-gun votes and working with Feingold on so called "campaign finance".

Perhaps you should consider joining your true party?

Christopher Johnson | 03.24.07 09:20 PM

Why would anyone contribute to this guy anyway. He's too old and to cranky.

Peter Zeidenturd | 03.24.07 09:23 PM

We believe it doesn't matter how much the other guys have raised so far....

Fred Thompson for President '08

CW Goad | 03.24.07 09:27 PM

McCain doesn't have a chance because he is a liberal wacko in conservative drag dress... his fake dress is falling and we realize he is a phony.

Fred Thompson is the only honest, conservative, real Amerian male, who is not afraid to speak he truth and to say what he knows is right.

Goodbye McCain, and bring in Fred Thomspon.

Len Durst | 03.24.07 09:31 PM

Being in SC i can tell you that vast majority of the GOP money men are all behind McCain for 2008.

Chris | 03.24.07 09:34 PM

The "Late Start" comment from Sen McCain regarding fund raising goals is laughable. The real reason of course is that the core of the party is sick and disgusted with half baked republicans with capricious tendencies

Joseph D Cicero, Aurora, CO | 03.24.07 09:37 PM

To John McCain:
You just as well forget running for President because you will never win. Teaming up with the liberal Ted Kennedy on immigration has fixed you for good.
I had intended voting for you until your immigration reform bill with him.
It is over!!!

Millie Blanton | 03.24.07 09:55 PM

RINO'S are having trouble raising funds these days! So what?

Bob Clark | 03.24.07 10:15 PM

Why don't all you guys throw in the towel and give your war chests to Fred Thompson and let a true conservative run with a chance to win!

John | 03.24.07 10:19 PM

Poor baby McCain. Cry me a river you big phony hipocrite. And republicans had the nerve to accuse Al Gore and John Kerry of "Flip-Flopping". The pot is sure calling the kettle black for sure. For the record, I also dislike Hillary Clinton for similar reasons.

Ryan | 03.24.07 10:22 PM

So, the big 3 will be equally funded... Romney's this year's version of Phil Gramm... he's a flip-flop a minute.

William | 03.24.07 10:37 PM

John oughta take a hike and quit. He's a has been, all you republicans are zilch. Has Beens.

Ya'll ain't got a snowballs chance in hell of winning in 08. We want Slick Willie Back! And we wanna get rid of religion, the noble lie.

Don Woods | 03.24.07 10:40 PM

The unseemly 'Dash for Cash' is on.

There must be some way to get the money out of politics; any ideas, Senator?

Dugald A. Taylor | 03.24.07 10:52 PM

The Big Bucks are not following McCain because of all the shananigans he has pulled against the President, The Republican Senate, that wanted action on the Presidents requests - 'his gang of 14' destroyed our chances to do things well while we had the chance. His offensive stand on immigration is dangerous to this country and to every American. I cannot stand to even look at him on tv. His joined at the hip Kennedy relationship is so distasteful to me that I even wish him 'ill..' The Kennedy McCain immigration bill, the
bill limiting funds for canidates (McCain Feingold) is should be illegal constitutionally, His duplicitious actions are for grand standing and his self importance, not to solve problems. They do NOT to help our country or Americans citizens.

He is NOT trustworthy and has a really bad attitude. His ego is the size of the 'Universe' with 'Him' in the middle of it. The soft-spoken crap that he 'shows in public' are a mask for a very angry, little man.

So he was a war hero... he has used up that years ago.
We do not deserve this duplicitous old bastard in the Republican party let alone as a President of us all.

Jezzika | 03.24.07 10:56 PM

Good. We don't need another faux conservative for president anyway.

Jessie Casson | 03.24.07 11:00 PM

Thank God!

Not like it matters. No way in hell will McCain ever win the republican nomination.

damiansix | 03.24.07 11:00 PM

I will not vote for John McCain. My family say they will not vote for John McCain. Every Republican I have talked to say they, too, will not vote for McCain.

Based upon my conversations with conservative Republicans in Arizona, I predict McCain will not be nominated as the Republican candidate for President. The mainstream media love him, but mainstream Republicans do not.

Jon | 03.24.07 11:28 PM

Despite the fact that Sen. McCain spoke at my daughter's comencement at The Naval Academy, he will not have my support.

Dr. Ed O'Neill | 03.24.07 11:35 PM

OH how sad air coming out of tires on the bus

smith | 03.24.07 11:38 PM

"a late start" HA!

Anon | 03.24.07 11:52 PM

McCain shouldn't be wasting his supporters' money with a presidential run. He should cut out the song-and-dance and just establish the political foundation or think tank or whatever he thinks will promote a legacy for him.

The presidency is not in his future, plain and simple.

McGehee | 03.25.07 12:03 AM

I don't know what his goal was but, you'd think he's been running since he lost in 2000. And he's kicked into gear much earlier than January. I think his campaign is in trouble. He lost the indie and moderate dem vote. It's a pity but, he threw his lot in with Bush and gambled.

vwcat | 03.25.07 12:36 AM

McCain is feeling the backlash for his past efforts to curry favor with the media instead of Republicans. His Jail-House conversion to Real immigration control. Smacks of the kind of pandering normaly done by Hillary Inc.

A. ROSARIO | 03.25.07 12:47 AM

Wake-up call to McCain: Republicans weren't thrilled about you in 2000, and like you even less now that you've lost your marbles and want to escalate the Iraq war. Your insincere pandering to the Chrisitan Right Nuts isn't working, either. Time to pack it in?

Henriette Wayne | 03.25.07 01:08 AM

That'll not help you, hawkish one.

Linda Baker | 03.25.07 01:09 AM

John McRino wanted to keep money out of politics didn't he?

Well, he got what his lame a$$ wanted didn't he?

dave | 03.25.07 01:10 AM

I like Senator McCain because he wants amnesty for us undocumented workers. We pay taxes and are entitled to all of the benefits Americans have, from education, health care, to free day care for our kids. If you look at the history of the Mexican people, we were here first, long before the blacks and the white gringos! Go McCain!!!

Ernesto Martinez | 03.25.07 01:19 AM

Both McCain and Romney are total jokes. McCain is almost a satire of the candidate he was in 2000. And Romney has flip-flopped more than John Kerry ever did.

The Republicans had better get smart in '08 and nominate Rudy. He is the ONLY Republican I would vote for. I'll vote for Rudy, Gore or Obama. I will NOT vote for Hillary, McCain, or Romney.

Steve Slatten | 03.25.07 01:31 AM

Do you think it might have something to do with his positions that are, fundamentally, not conservative? Hello John McCain, imploding the first amendment and opening the borders to hordes of illegals will not get you nominated or elected.

Ellen Lopez | 03.25.07 01:48 AM

The Vice President's replacement (for health reasons) will be next GOP candidate.

Jim Penn | 03.25.07 02:20 AM

Go Romney!

Steven Rinehart | 03.25.07 02:28 AM

Best news I have heard to date. Conservative Republicans (I am one) needs to abandon McCain, Juliani, Jeb Bush, Newt Gingrich and any other RINO that comes along as quickly as possible.
We need Duncan Hunters or Tom Tancredo's. The Bush doctrine of Limp Dick Leadership (LDL)has killed our party. Lets wake up. /ji

John Ingram | 03.25.07 02:56 AM

Late start? Wasn't he the first to announce? He probably needs a better fundraiser - isn't that woman considered b-list?

Justin Theophilus | 03.25.07 03:02 AM

I think that Romney will best McCain in this first test of donor strength, and then all future tests as well.

The reasons for this are that Mitt has more fervent supporters, has excellent fundraising abilities, is gaining in grass roots supporters, campaign intencity, and is experiencing momentum because of these fresh new Mitthead bodies and their combined strengths they bring to the campaign.

Big business wants John McCain because they know he will carry their cheap labor water for them by making sure this nation doesn't survive the up to 103,000,000 MILLION new legal immigrants (not including the 12-25 million ILLEGAL aliens currently breaking millions of US laws yearly) SS taxes for them) he wants to flood into the US in the next 20 short years.

It would be funny if it were not so tragic. The GOP big business wing and the Democrat party as a whole support illegal immigration into the US. Both parties lied when they said that the immigrants do work that American citizens won't do. The reason many Americans won't work in some employment fields is because the normal market forces of supply and demand for certain jobs have been tilted in favor of lower skilled illegal immigrants, who are willing to work harder for less money and benefits.

This is what the Bushites have planeed for us: To have some sort of a United State of North America so that Canada and the US can become suseptable to multinational corporations and conglomerates who lust for cheap labor right on this continent, and can supply it from all over the WORLD through MEXICO!

You have officially been sold down the river to the highest Bushite Republican bidders so that their plans can continue ( the recent arrests by the Feds is a joke and a ruse) unabated.

Go Mitt Go!

Denny | 03.25.07 04:12 AM

I wouldn't, even if I could, give any of them
a PENNY!!!

Dorothy | 03.25.07 04:57 AM

poor senator mc cain, you know, the senator who complained about too much money being in politics. i guess what he meant to say was there is too much free speech in politics and now he is paying a price or should i say he is being denied a price to continue his sham of a candidacy. left wing dinosaurs like mc cain need to move to cuba and practice politics there.

jim martin | 03.25.07 05:28 AM

McCLown is a Hispanderer. He kowtows to the racist open border lobby. He has bought into the fascist aztlan myth. He is a traitor and he can burn in hell. He McClown, stop the invasion.

-- Former McCain republican

Joe Schmo | 03.25.07 06:19 AM

Well, this Republican will not be sending in one dime for Sen. McCain. Were he to get elected President, it would be because Democrats voted for him.... as well they should, since he is one of them.

Cowgirl | 03.25.07 06:39 AM

Don't waste your time McCain. You are not a viable candidate. You are a liberal running on a conservative ticket.

Robert Sminkey | 03.25.07 07:08 AM

How about the fact that no Republican in their right mind would give money to the McCain campaign? There might be a clue there. McCain needs to go to the Dems.

Eddie Georg | 03.25.07 08:03 AM

The idiot needs to throw in the towel. Conservatives hate him for his decades of backstabbing. They are NEVER going to support him no matter what he says or does now.

Jimmy Milner | 03.25.07 08:10 AM

McCain needs to drop out now, he won't win. He shot himself in the foot when he came out for support for illegal aliens, instead of heeding American citizens!

Bob | 03.25.07 08:30 AM

Of course not. He preaches a Democrat message. Dems won't donate, and Republicans darn sure won't. My heart bleeds for him. Perhaps he should listen to his constituents on immigration, taxes, etc?

Frank | 03.25.07 08:34 AM

When he entered the race has nothing to do with why John McCain won't make his goal. People remember the McCain-Fingold bill. They know he is pairing up with Ted Kennedy regarding No Child Left Behind and his stand on illegal immigration which he is sliding around with...

Mama Wolf | 03.25.07 09:08 AM

There is a great deal of denial going on with all the pre primary candidates of both parties.

1.No candidate from the Socialistic/Ultra Liberal state of Massachusetts has any chance to become President of the United States. The rest of the nation looks with curious eyes at Massachusetts with good reason.

2. John McCain's Camellion waffling, plus his feared mental stability illiminate any chance of election. He will say or do anything to find any support, anywhere, with anyone.

3. A Hillary Clinton election would be a travesty to our US heritage.

4. Barak Obama has already shown his lack of judgement by accepting the legitamacy of his qualifications to be President of the United States.

5. Rudy Giuliani will be destroyed by the Liberal/Socialist media and press orchestrated and funded by Hollywood.

Bruce | 03.25.07 09:16 AM

You're not missing funding goals because of timing John. You're missing them because you're a RINO. You can't be the representative of the media and the conservative primary base. Maybe you really aren't smart enough to be President as you think you are.

Ken | 03.25.07 09:17 AM

Why should he? Conservatives think he is a fool.
Only RINOs and Libs like the guy. He is a joke!

Greg West | 03.25.07 09:23 AM

I hope McCain will not make it. It is a tragedy that in order to be able to run for president of the United States money is the most important matter. Good Americans with high morals and standards have no chance. This is the reason this country is dying, and I believe it is too late to resurrect this once so proud and strong nation. Thank you.

Schulz | 03.25.07 09:37 AM

Why's McCain wasting his time fund raising , he doesn't have a snow balls chance in hell of getting elected. I as a conservative will not vote for him under any circumstances.

Dontab | 03.25.07 10:00 AM

The American public should write to all the campaigners and request they limit their spending on campaigns to no more than 2 months cost of ads run before the conventions...the dollars spent by these obviously power hungry individuals is atrocious and wasteful to say the least...the biggest spenders (Hilary to name one) will be the first to say she cares about the poor...well then raise funds for the poor and stop wasting and spending to get elected.

pat | 03.25.07 11:08 AM

McCain is not conservative enough... that's the reason for lack of fundraising.

Kris Krause | 03.25.07 11:19 AM

The reason McCain's fundraising is down is simple. He had a large base of support amongst moderate and liberal Republican's as well as Independents when he ran in 2000. For the 2008 campaign, McCain has sold out all these people and morphed himself into a Neo-con. He is effect - now running against the principles he stood for in 2000. His year 2000 supporters will no longer support him financially - and his decision to now pander to the neo-cons shows that his supposed " Straight Talk Express" theme is all phoney. Even Neo-cons themselves can smell a pandering phoney and they will not support him either. McCain is a phoney candidate - that is why the money had dried up. " I'm Looking Through You " - The Beatles.

BRAD HILL | 03.25.07 11:20 AM

If senator Mc Cain behaved like a Republican he might be able to raise money like a serious candidate. In his effort to please everyone he has pleased no one.

Billy Budd | 03.25.07 11:22 AM

It is sad that political campaigns have more in common with girl scout cookie drives than with the issues facing American citizens.

Gary Selck | 03.25.07 11:27 AM

McCain is too old to be an acceptable US President; he should be comtemplating a selection of available nursing homes, not the White House. Deoes every doddering old fool want to run for President? Seems so. MaCain needs to Quit, Go Home, Unequivocaly get out of the race forever.

James Pinellas | 03.25.07 11:49 AM

Maybe McCain can get a job lobbying for illegal aliens when his presidential campaign crashes and burns.

James | 03.25.07 12:15 PM

What a load of bull! McCain isn't taking the money prize because conservatives distrust and dislike him.
He is paying the price for trying to be the liberal media's darling. It may get you on the A list on the rubber chicken circuit, but it is a fast track to conservative oblivion.

George | 03.25.07 12:25 PM

Late start...? John's been running for 6 years. Nice honorable man, but jabbed free speech in the eye with Campaign Finance Reform. Too much smooching with liberals, spitting on conservatives, and supporting amnesty for law breakers. It's not the late start. Too bad too, he could have been a great president...if he belived what Reagan believed and lived it.

Leif Jensen | 03.25.07 12:38 PM

America Needs a president who can heal the damage that George Bush has done to our reputation and world standing . McCain is a hawk and will bring the same policies to the table that have caused the problem that we face in the world. I admire McCains bravery and hisabilities but he lacks the ability to compromize and will not negotiate with our enemies and his polocies would fail just as all Rightwing republican policies have failed. Everyone at the negotiating table has to gain something or the deal wont go down Until this government understands that nothing will change in this world. The more people who die the more hated our nation becomes.

Charles Bowen | 03.25.07 12:56 PM

Did Senator McCain ever consider that it is not his "late start" that is causing him to miss his fundraising goals? When, in fact, it is his blatant alienation of himself with the base of the party for the last 20 years. He has done everything he could to play both parties against the middle so that he can maintain his Hollywood Maverick status with the liberal mass media. They (the media) are his only true supporters. Too bad because he could have probably been a good to great leader, but his tactics to gain his popularity have been the same things that have distanced himself from the conservative base.

John Rice | 03.25.07 12:57 PM

PLEASE! Someone tell Fred Thompson to run!!!! He will energize the base!!! Forget McCain and especially Romney.

Mike Mundy | 03.25.07 01:04 PM

Thanks for the Spin McCain!

Jason | 03.25.07 01:23 PM

who cares.

ron | 03.25.07 01:55 PM

Are we fast-approaching the day when elections will be decided without all the detail work of actually setting up voting places and machines and personnel? If you begin totaling up all the millions$$ and millions$$ of exploratory campaign expenses, the millions$$ and millions$$ of soft-money, the hundreds and hundreds of workers and consultants vs. the claims of ALL candidates that they CARE about the poor and uninsured and jobless and homeless, shouldn't we wonder if Hypocrisy is going to be the eventual winner, regardless of who gets in?

What next? maybe a quick and easy winner-take-all, no-limit poker game? "My direct mail flood of four, beats your direct mail flood of three plus a phone bank"?

Who's actually minding the store now -- and who will be minding it even less after the election? Manipulate the primaries, try to manipulate the voting eligibility, change the electoral college rules, focus on the states that add up to more than all the others combined.

Wow, what a country!

Joan Battey | 03.25.07 02:09 PM

I think that McCain should be running as a Democrat. He is always cozing up to the great satin Ted Kennedy anyway, so why not join his party.

Billy Thomas | 03.25.07 02:09 PM

Fred Thompson will raise money faster than any other candidate. I suspect many of the GOP are holding back their checkbooks until Fred enters the race.

CW Goad | 03.25.07 02:13 PM

If he seriously thinks Republican voters aren't funding his campaign because of a "late start", then he's living in a dream world. His continued undermining of Republican's and this President has done him in. Prehaps he should ask the media for money, he seemed to go to them for everything else.

WWT | 03.25.07 02:48 PM

Fortunately for the American people McCain is disappointed by his fund raising results. Hopefully he will continue to be disappointed in his efforts to become president. His determination to satisify the greed factor with his insistance to reward law breaking illegals in spite of being well aware that the vasr majority of the American people are opposed to this doesn't set well with voters. McCain and Bush almost single handly destroyed any unity in the Republician party. Both are out of touch with the wishes and will of the American people, buffered by and serving big business and greed. They both are willing to leave the American people holding the bag. We have reached 300 million in population but will we reach 300 years as a nation? If people do not pay more attention of how their elected officials vote and un-elect those that say one thing and do another, I believe it will be unlikely,

I for one for the most part can credit the two of them for prompting myself, my wife and daughter as soon as possible to go down and re-register as independents.

Lets face it! There is no longer a republican or democratic party. Only the "Big Bisiness, Big Money and Greed Factor Party" against the American People Party. There are no more Ronald Reagans, John F. Kennedys or Roosivelts on the horizons and will not be as long as the media is controlled by so few.

Charles L. McLeod | 03.25.07 03:38 PM

Hopefully, the fat cats will keep dumping more $$ into McCain's futile bid. His liberal postures on a number of significant issues, and his lousy senatorial leadership over the last few years are a major reason why the GOP is now on the losing side. They had the dems on the ropes and blew it, thanks to a few like him.

John Seaquist | 03.25.07 03:42 PM

Until someone more conservative (and who comes across as a decent guy) comes along (Like a Fred Thomson, not Newt), McCain is the best we've got. I'll be voting for him until someone better comes along. McCain is a decent guy, and we can't afford four years of Hilary or Osama.

RAC | 03.25.07 03:49 PM

I admire and thank Sen. McCain for his heroism during his capture..many years ago.
That said..he is no longer popular amoung his own party..I would NEVER vote for him.He and his gang of 14..weakened our President and began the ball rolling for the slow and very public decline of this Administrations standing in the polls.
How ironic that HE is finding it difficult to raise money. GOOD..he and Feingold made it difficult to keep good money in politcs.Time to pay the piper,Mr.McCain, for all your liberal ideas.

Fro | 03.25.07 04:41 PM

Hey Fred Thompson supporters...keep in mind that not only was he McCain's 2000 campaign chair but that he also VOTED FOR McCain/Feingold. Sounds like people are supporting someone they truly know nothing about. Typical for so many voters nowadays. Jump on any old bandwagon regardless of facts.

Tony | 03.25.07 04:41 PM

Cookie Freire put it in perfect words. Still, I'll vote for McCain if he's the GOP Nominee. Otherwise, I would have to vote for Barrack Hussein or Mrs. Bubba.

Still, it's like voting for Dole, 96 or Ford, 76. The Sailor gets what he has deserved.

ocjj35 | 03.25.07 05:15 PM

McCain is about the worst Republican candidate that I could imagine. He has no party loyalty, and votes with the Dems as often as he can. His negatives aren't as high as Hillary, but he's not electable. I doubt if he will see another term as Senator.

I could have gone and seen him in Littleton yesterday but I went to a party. Far more entertaining!

Peter Henden | 03.25.07 05:32 PM

TO: Senator McCain
RE: Too Late?

Yeah. By about 7 years and something called McCain-Feingold

You served us better in the Hanoi Hilton than you have in the Capitol.

Please go back there.

Regards,

Chuck(le)
P.S. I thought you took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Since you've decided to attack it, that must make you a traitor to your oath.

Chuck Pelto | 03.25.07 05:34 PM

The nation drifts ever closer to disaster and neither the Demoncranks or Republicants have the political wisdom, much less the will to implement critical measures necessary that would make possible the constitutional restoration of our country. Both parties are so bound by special interest groups, the pursuit of personal power and aggrandizement, and proselytes of the idolatry of internationalism that they have become the enemies of all those who love liberty. Nearly all of them have violated their oaths, in one way or another, to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.

And we have stood by and not only allowed it to happen, but often have encouraged their perfidity. Instead of holding he villains accountable, our only concern has been if their would be a wider space at the feeding trough and more slop to keep us content. I wish I could say we have been lulled into a stupor while the velvet chains of slavery have been slipped around our necks, but most of us have ran willingly and even eagerly to bend the knee to the idol of the state. How we long to show our loyalty to our masters, how we fall over ourselves in fawning obedience as good serfs and vassals for a few more crumbs of sustenance, failing to see that which they feed us was once ours by our diligent labor that we have exchanged for promises of security. How sweet the taste of pottage! How easier the life of indentured servitude in the government's gilded cage than to live as a free man, bowing only to the living God!

Over thirty years ago, I saw the Demoncrats selling out to depraved liberalism and socialistic internationalism. Now, I find the Republicans treading down a very similar path. Conservative no longer, if they ever truly were. Perhaps at the time of Robert Taft, and a brief shining moment with Reagan (but who, unfortunately surrounded himself with many advisors who worshipped before the God of Mammon, and some, like James Baker, who are anti-Semetic), but now have more in common with their political rivals than our founding documents.

Even if the party I now support, CONSTITUTION PARTY, were to somehow miraculously gain majority governing power, it would be difficult to prevent the catastrophic plunge to which we are headed. But it would, at least restore hope for a recovery of the Constitutional Republic that we were meant to be, because it would mean that a majority of Americans were willing to embrace the responsibility to live as a free people once again instead of drones of the state. However, I don't see that happening. Unfortunately, we have become content to live as wards of the state, sedated by welfare,
American Idolatry, and the siren song of politicians who promise to take care of us, if only we give up that which we should hold dear above all else, our God-given liberty. And I lament for my countrymen, who, it seems, hold their birthright in such derision that they esteem the lies of traitors and hold in contempt the blood of patriots spilled in our behalf.

May God have mercy on the United States of America!

The other Senator from Arizona would be my top choice. I just love Jon Kyl...a man of true integrity and principle.

Rob Griffith | 03.25.07 05:47 PM

Dear John -

To Reiterate : You are a "Has Been" because....

Yes - You do not get it! 80% of the American People want ILLEGAL Aliens sent back to where they belong - out side the US. Border from whence they came.
Yes - You are a liberal - not a conservative
Yes - You belong in the Democratic Party as you do not support Republicans.
Yes - You are a "Back-Stabber" along with your other gang of 14
Yes - You you are a failing phony.
Yes - You do not deserve one penny of conservative money or donations.
Yes - You pander to the Media.
Yes - For all these reasons and many more---YOU are "UNELECTABLE' as a Republican candidate for President.

You have cooked your own goose .....!

Do us all a favor and leave the party now.

Very Sincerely - A true and conservative Republican

Retired True Republican | 03.25.07 06:04 PM

As I indicated in an email to your website many months ago, your position on illegal immigration disqualified you from getting the votes of many voters like myself. Of course, you ignored the email, apparently thinking we would forget. No chance! Senator McCain, what you are seeing now is the "chickens coming home to roost" with your woeful fundraising results. Do us all a favor and step aside so we can focus on candidates who take issues like illegal immigration seriously.

Richard Wood | 03.25.07 06:30 PM

McCain is ugggh my U.S. senator from Arizona. No no, I have but one senator and his name is Jon Kyl. I'd really rather the guy NOT be my u.s. senator. But the reality here in Arizona is something far worse might replace him. The only thing good about McCain is he has an R next to his name. He should run for the senate from NBCCBSABCCNN and not Arizona.

Jim | 03.25.07 06:36 PM

John, it's time to hang it up and support a true conservative for President, either Romney or Thompson. You're too old and too angry to be President. You're also too much alligned with the libs (Demonrats)to be viable.

John Bunion | 03.25.07 06:53 PM

Mitt Romney will be the Next President of the USA,

he is the ONLY one who can beat a
Billary / Obama ticket:

He is the ONLY one with the guts to kick out
and stop illegal immigration

Letty Bromenschenkel | 03.25.07 07:02 PM

John McCain is.....

1. Too old
2. Pandering to the religious right
3. flip flopping all over the place
4. One can't keep track of what he is for and what he is against.

John McCain is.....
Still a loser

fkay | 03.25.07 07:18 PM

There is only room for one moderate Republican in this race and it is Rudy G. He is the only Republican that has a chance of winning the general election and mending the unhealthy divisiveness in our country.

Republicans are going to have to give a little if they want to avoid total Democratic rule for at least the next four years.

Steve Keegan | 03.25.07 07:18 PM

McCain is in denial! What conservative is going to give him money? My faith in humanity is nearly restored.

Curt409 | 03.25.07 07:48 PM

I just can't understand why a NORMAL conservative can't run? People don't want to vote for Hillary. Nobody likes her money-grubbing, hypocritical crap.

Matthew | 03.25.07 08:12 PM

That Old back stabbin Mc Cain does not have a chance in hell of winning the GOP Nomination! Hell he'd have a better chance of winning the Democratic Nomination!

Rudy cant get the Nomination either, too Liberal!

Fred Thompson is too liberal too, Just check out his voting record in the Senate!

The best Dog running is Gov. Romney, his only sin is he is a mormon! They said the same thing about John Kennedy! VOTE ROMNEY IN 08!!!

Floyd Martin | 03.25.07 08:20 PM

If you really want to get back to small gov't and individual liberties then consider supporting Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX). He is a Republican but with strong libertarian ideals.

Steve Anderson | 03.25.07 08:27 PM

what a suprise. you mean that photo op with lieberman at AEI didn't help?

jim | 03.25.07 08:30 PM

A year from now I'll be ready to think about the presidential election. Until then, who cares?

John Gaskin | 03.25.07 09:03 PM

John McCain is old tired material, Mitt Romney is the strong, fresh face of the Republican Party! He will lead the party and country to victory in 2008!

John S. | 03.25.07 09:49 PM

Chris, I'm from Arizona and no one here will vote for McCain - maybe you guys in SC could do us a favor and take the jerk. Hillary tried to take over the health care system. McCain undermines the Constitution itself with his "campaign finance (now you can't say bad things about McCain in campaign commercials) reform" bill. And all those rumors about his temper and how mean he really is - THEY'RE TRUE. Conservatives all across Arizona are doing everything we can to be rid of him.

AZ Rick | 03.25.07 10:23 PM

Fred Thompson should be our next President. Join the draft Fred Thompson movement and give the GOP something to be excited about.

Kris | 03.25.07 10:44 PM

Late start! I remember him running for the presidential office about 10 years ago. If he thinks that he is not well known by now, he should not waste anymore time and quit. On the other hand, I think that McCain is known to well and this is the reason he is doing so poorly. My prediction; in half a year his stuff starts quitting on him. Not that many people want to be around a looser.

Mark | 03.25.07 10:56 PM

Good bye John McCain...work on your home life with your wife and kids. Work to do something of value directly for AZ. Enjoy your senior years and realize that you time has gone and save your energy for something that will matter

dog | 03.25.07 11:22 PM

No illegal alien left behind! We need to send these traitor politicians a one way ticket south of the border along with a nice FEMA trailer.

emma | 03.26.07 12:57 AM

McCain isn't electable.

The best he'll do is pick up the Democrat vote in the Republican primaries, as he did in 2000, since he's perceived as both beatable and tolerable.

As for Thompson, is he really "that" conservative? His voting record didn't indicate that while he was in the Congress. Romney is every bit as conservative as Thompson, plus, he's actually running for President, he IS NOT a lawyer, and he's a fine business man and problem solver.

Cal | 03.26.07 01:21 AM

Can you imagine where we would be in four years if Jonn McCain were president? Mitt Romney is far and away the best candidate on either side of the aisle. He's only major candidate that is not a life long politician. Rudy's got too much baggage, McCain is too old and too liberal - Mitt Romney is the only candidate that's proven he knows how to build wealth and balance a budget.

coMITTed | 03.26.07 01:44 AM

McCain is lame!!

Quinn | 03.26.07 02:45 AM

Only a proven talented manager of unquestioned integrity can guide this nation through the very serious problems we currently face.
Go Romney!

James Midgley | 03.26.07 04:00 AM

McCain suffered through the Viet Nam war and he should be commended for his steadfastness and loyalty. A true American he is. But he cannot win the White House. His ego is too big, he is no conservative and his arrogance is intolerable. His day has come and gone. Having said that.... let's all take a good look at Fred Thompson. He seems like the real thing. But for the big picture, ANYBODY is better than Hillary. Their machine is relentless and will chew Obama up. Can you stand 4 years of that shrill mouth???

gooseberry | 03.26.07 06:48 AM

Here is a petition to try to get
Fred Thompson to run
http://www.petitiononline.com/FDT_08/petition.html
I'll send that guy all the money I can.

Greg West | 03.26.07 07:40 AM

No Republican Troop Killer will WIN any presidential election. As far as the eye can see, republicans are known as Killers of US Troops through their reckless behavior.

Soldiers Dad | 03.26.07 08:11 AM

McCain-Clinton might be a more approprate ticket!

Ed Shepler | 03.26.07 08:44 AM

McCain isn't raising enough money because he has stuck it to his own party so many times and people are sick of it. Starting late is nothing but an excuse.

Jeff Daniels | 03.26.07 09:29 AM

G'day mates...look here, what we got is a real beaut! He's an old wanna-be Alpha RINO that needs to be put down.

Looks like those with the purse strings are doing it the humane way.

g'bye RINO's...REAL conservatives need only apply!

The RINO Hunter | 03.26.07 10:26 AM

McCain is the only authentic Pro-Lifer in the race, from BOTH parties! That's why he is leading in Iowa and New Hampshire. I'll send him a check.

glido | 03.26.07 10:59 AM

A few, wandering words...

To me, Giuliani is the ONE thing that all the others are not, (including Bush, btw): A leader.

I lived in NYC before and during a large part of his mayoral terms and the effect he had on that city is unmistakable and undeniable. I suppose those who want to brand him a liberal forgot about the loving press coverage equating him with Adolph Hitler, during that transformation. I suppose they also forgot about the US Attorney who took on the intractable New York Mafia AND PUMMELED THEM INTO OBSCURITY.

Despite any other differences I might have with him, or any other irrelevant personal "baggage," that, is a man with a spine, and I don't believe that there is anything of which we are in more desperate need right now.

McCain is a joke. He has NO credibility whatsoever. But hey, you betray your constituents at your peril. That sentiment goes for all Republicans, as well, INCLUDING the biggest disappointment of my political life: GWB.

I don't know just when he transformed into his father, but his weakness has done more damage to the Republican party than anyone in the last 20 years. Sickenlingly weak on Illegal immigration. Weak on domestic spending. Weak on corruption. And despite the bluster, weak on defending the country. The first GWB I elected sounded like Reagan. The second GWB I actually worked very hard to elect morphed into an even weaker version of his father.

At this point, NOBODY respects him. More inportantly, NOBODY fears him. And that's his own doing.

Regarding the war... I had no problem with the strategy. However, at every test, (Fallujah, Sadyr at the Mosque, repeated treasonous acts by more Democrats than I can name), Bush lost his nerve failed MISERABLY and lowered our military to the point where a bunch of psycopaths with RPG's believe that they can not only match us, but even win.

I reserve no concern for the enemy, or their propaganda outlets in the media or the Democratic party. ANYONE who puts troops into battle has THE MORAL OBLIGATION to prosecute it as viciously, quickly, and decisively as possible. If they do not have the stomach for that, then it's time to get them the hell out.

But again, Bush's spinelessness has unnecessarily cost us all and now we Republicans wander around in the dark, bumping into everything, including each other.

I only hope that a President Giuliani can provide a little bit of light, but nothing is guaranteed anymore.

D. Miller | 03.26.07 11:19 AM

I am a Reblican and will not vote for John McCain! We need a commando type of man leading our country. A commando that knows all about the ins and outs of wars. Where is that man, I haven't seen him yet? And while we are talking about men, lets shoot some arrows at John Edwards, for not getting out of the race and stay with his wife, he will never get elected because of his greed, and also the women in this country will slaughter him. His kids need him now more than they ever did.

Lorraine Gagnon | 03.26.07 11:49 AM

John should consider being hillie baby's VP wouldn't THAT be a pair to draw to.
Or he could have a good chance of winning any election in MEXICO.
I would consider Fred Thompson but need to check out his record and listen to him. I'm tired fo pretend conservatives.

Del | 03.26.07 12:40 PM

As a firearms owner I am very aware of your Senate votes supporting gun control measures. You're a darling of the Brady bunch.

As an Amercian I strongly support the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. All ten of those rights. You trampled all over my 1st Amendment rights with your campaign finance bill.

To that end, I can not, nor will not, support your your run for the White House. Sorry John but, as others have mentioned, you are a Republican in name only.

Austin Buck | 03.26.07 12:41 PM

Ture, McCain is an American hero who was a POW during VietNam war, along with a friend of mine
who is now deceased, Al Stafford of Pensacola, FL; however, McCain is not the one to lead this
country. Frankly, the best man with the "right stuff" who can win this election for the Republican Party is Fred D. Thompson, former Senator of Tennessee. His approval rating increases every day among True Republican
Conservatives, known as "Reaganites."
He has the Reagan charisma and political savvy,
and like Reagan he can speak boldly when called upon to do so because he is a "communicator"
and can hold his own in any forum. In addition,
Fred D.Thompson is presidential, and he is electable!

Sarah Sawyer | 03.26.07 12:49 PM

Go Mitt!! "MITT HAPPENS!!" support Mitt and get your gear at http://www.cafepress.com/elephantshop

Drew | 03.26.07 12:51 PM

Bad candidate, equally bad presidential material. Get out now stuborn old man.

Alex | 03.26.07 12:55 PM

Frankly, I am a Romney supporter. However, I know nothing about Thompson. I am curious about Thompson and his record. I tried to search for independent records with only small success. Below are two sites which contain some introductory information about Fred Thompson. What was Thompson's record for voting as Senator? Comments above state Thompson voted for the McCain-Fiengold act and Thompson was McCain's national co-chair in 2000. Those are not positive to me. Individuals seem supportive of Thompson as a conservative. Why?

In additional to his support of McCain-Fiengold and his support of Senator McCain's election efforts, Thompson assisted Watergate investigators in bringing down President Nixon (not bad but interesting that he was not working to defend rather then prosecute because I always assumed the prosecuting leaders were Democrats in the Watergate investigations). Thompson did defend Board of Pardons and Paroles Board head Marie Ragghianti but I can not determine if that was a financial decision or moral initiative. Attorney and future U.S. Senator Fred Thompson launched his acting career in this picture, portraying himself (he was Ragghianti's lawyer). This activity resulted in a book and movie in Hollywood for Thompson.

Now I fully support conservatives defending the constitution. Sometimes our leaders (conservative and liberal) need to be called to task. I believe we must defend this nation and the rule of law. So he went after Nixon and he defended Ragghianti; where was Thompson in the efforts to investigate President Clinton? Has Thompson defended Attorney General Alberto Gonzales? Did Thompson do anything when President Bill Clinton came into office and his Attorney General, Janet Reno, fired all 93 federal prosecutors?

I know that Thompson stepped out of the Senate just before 911, but what was his voting record while he served on the Senate? I can not locate much of his record so if someone has a link I would like to view it. I sincerely would like to know (send data) why a conservative should support Thompson. I do not see much of his record and what I see leans the wrong way.

The entire Uglicon gang should be brought to book for their crimes against this country. Call themselves patriotic yet have never lifted a finger to aid a fellow countryman in trouble. Wrapping themselves in the flag does not make them patriot.

Emilio Franciscus | 03.26.07 01:21 PM

As long as USA is in Iraq, Republicans can not win presidency. McCain and Romney keep losing voters and Guiliani surges ahead. There are no republicans running that I like so looks grim for Rep party after Bush II destroyed party. That a boy Georgie! Thompson is a very attractive candidate.

mascmen7 | 03.26.07 01:29 PM

Romney!Romney!Romney!Romney!Romney!Romney!Romney!

mike | 03.26.07 01:46 PM

The Republican Party is so far off our base... Romney could bring back fiscal discipline and encourage economic growth. I know it sounds awful to say, but no one is going to care about casualties in Iraq or pro-life/pro-choice or gay rights or any other popular "wedge" issues (thanks for nothing Karl) if the US, in 20 years, is in recession and playing 3rd fiddle to China and the EU.
Let's be the conservative party again.

an actual conservative | 03.26.07 02:12 PM

I say Fred Thompson can hop in right now and beat them all! As for Hillary: http://www.nohillaryforpresident.com/hillary-president-forum/

She's done for, hopefully.

WiseOne | 03.26.07 02:13 PM

Payback hurts, looks like the McCain bus had it's tires slashed again. Enjoy the short trip!!

Ricky S | 03.26.07 02:34 PM

There are many in the media that think it wil be Hillary versus McCain when all is said and done. I say that's wishful thinking by the MSM. McCain is the one Republican Hillary would trounce in the GE and the liberals in the MSM know it. That is why you will see the MSM do all they can do to advance McCain. You want '96 all over again then nominate McCain. McCain has no GOP base of support. He has alienated everyone except for maybe a few wishy-washy types in the middle. He has no chance. Zero.

Jim Alexander | 03.26.07 02:44 PM

So, they're saying that Romney may actually be stronger than McCain because of all this, as long as its not Hillary, I think i'll be able to sleep at night.

ShelbSpeaks | 03.26.07 03:06 PM

Give me a break McCain, "Started too late"? You have been campaigning for 6 years! The best thing for you to do is donate your money to a good charity and retire to AZ.

Although Romney has his weaknesses, and who doesn't, he has the best chance to beat Hillary in '08. IMHO

Carl | 03.26.07 04:18 PM

My reason for detesting Little John, in addition to those set forth above with which I agree, is his concern for the "torture" of baby killing terrorists. He wants us to accord these slimeballs the protections of the Geneva Convention as if they were uniformed soldiers captured in battle instead of the cowards they are who have to be pulled out of their rat holes.

Ray McCord | 03.26.07 04:33 PM

MIKE HUCKABEE IN 2008!!

McCain and Romney don't have a chance and Giuliani will fade. If the Republicans nominate their most conservative, legitimate candidate (Huckabee), the Democrats don’t have a chance.

Bruce Gresham | 03.26.07 04:47 PM

Goodbye McCain you ignored our pleas as you proceeded to rip apart the 1st ammendment and our nation's sovereignty over its borders.

You must have thought we were either irrevelent our stupid, who's the stupid one now?

Carlos L | 03.26.07 04:56 PM

Fred Dalton Thompson for President, Do it now Fred...America needs you. You remind me of Reagen...there just does not seem to be any B.S. about you. I need someone to vote for and campaign for.

Robert D Lockman Sr | 03.28.07 02:33 PM

McCain isn't that bad when you compare him to Romney who is a very scarey man and an idiot!

tom | 04.02.07 02:44 PM

Let me make something very clear to all those people who are not going to vote for mccain.

Guiliani=pro-abortion, so he's just not a runner

Romney= pro gay marriage ( and a rather late converter to prolife).oh and he's a mormon.

Fred Thompson= total biggot with no experience in this unprecedented time of a battle between good and evil. Will you really feel safe with him in power?? he knows nothing about terrorism.

You all ought to think VERY seriously of the consequences of putting any of these three men into power in these times and what it means to traditional conservative values.
