Fresh Franken Numbers

Comedian Al Franken (D-MN) announced today he had raised $1.3M in the 1stQ (or rather in the first 45 days after he announced his SEN bid) with over $1M CoH. That's quite an impressive sum for a novice candidate just out of the gate.

Two immediate questions come to mind: 1.) Will this intimidate any new Dems from entering the race? 2.) Does this completely blow out of the water '00 candidate/atty Mike Ciresi's (D) plan to NOT self-fund this time around? (He spent about $5M of his own cash in '00.) [QUINN MCCORD]

He grabs the low hanging fruit, no one from MN should be scared of this clown.

He'll get torrents of freebie MSM gush that Coleman shouldn't be too worried about. Although the people up there [I went to school there for four years] are a little slow in discerning who's sane and who's not.

The big question is how much of this is from Minnesota and how much is out-of-state?
The next question is how much is from large donors and how much is small donors?
And, no, this will not intimidate anyone from not running. He may have shown he can raise some cash - but he is still seen as a bit of carpetbagger, still questions of whether he is the best candidate, does he have too much baggage, etc...

Yeah, you can tell because we elected Norm back in 2002.

Coleman would lose to Hugo Chavez. Seriously, the Republican brand is trashed. It's Minnesota, not Alabama. If Franken gets the nomination, he wins. If another dem gets the nomination, they win.

Coleman and the Republicans lose. Iraq.

I'd call Franken a "pundit." He used to be a comedian. When I heard him on Air America, I found him to be very well informed, insightful, quick, and clever. I thought he handled himself well with a lot of very bright and knowledgeable people.
