McCain Trims Headquarters Staff
Sen. John McCain 's campaign retooling continues.
Manager Terry Nelson is trimming some of the organization's vestigial edges to pare down costs and more efficiently distribute key staff. Contrary to rumors, the campaign is not shedding weight in order to slow down its cash burn rate.
Nelson has decided to eliminate several staff positions from the campaign's May budget, some yet to be filled. In addition, several campaign consultants will see their contracts modified. Others currently on retainer will work for the campaign on a per-project basis.
Key departments, including political affairs, communications and the field staff in early primaries states -- were spared, and some instances, are still hiring.
A campaign aide characterized the changes as "minor adjustments."
After having raised $12.5 million, a solid but below-average sum for the Republican field, the campaign revamped its finance operation, bringing in Republican lobbyist and fundraising wizard Tom Loeffler to oversee fundraising, and asking Republican strategist Steve Schmidt to look after spending more carefully.
During February and March, McCain's campaign hired a staff of more than 120, and it staged several expensive bus trips through Iowa and New Hampshire. A trip through South Carolina is planned for next week.
Because a detailed accounting of McCain's spending hasn't yet be released, it's not clear whether the campaign began to pay the legion of consultants it has signed up.
The campaign aide declined to say how much McCain spent during the first quarter although McCain advisers have emphasized that the campaign's monetary difficulties revolved around the tasks of raising money, rather than the rate at which the money was spent.
Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney raised $24M and spent $12M.
McCain's first quarter filings will be available on Saturday. [MARC AMBINDER]

Did he shutdown his Baghdad campaign office?
Matt | 04.11.07 06:07 PM
Why doesn't he move his campaign headquarters to Baghdad since, as he says, things are going so well there. I’m sure the rent there is very reasonable and the weather I hear is nice and warm.

The MSM keeps telling us that McCain is losing ground because of his pro-war stance. They're only half right because his pro-war stance is making him less and less the darling of the pro-defeat MSM. He never had any chance with actual Republican voters because when it comes to his stand on any other issue, he is always, ALWAYS wrong. Remember McCain-Feingold? Remember the Gang of 14? He may be a war hero, but he's an horrendously bad legislator.
RedStater | 04.11.07 09:25 PM
I am a staunch Republican, but I would not vote for McCain if he were the last other Republican on this planet...
Charles L. McLeod | 04.11.07 09:27 PM
McCain lost me when he supported the illegals in this country, was part of the gang of 14, McCain/Feingold and his work with Kennedy. I will never be back. If he is the nominee I will simply not vote at all.
frank mize | 04.11.07 09:53 PM
Let's hope that the McCain campaign hears the message: No amnesty, no open borders, quit supporting illegal aliens as they break the law, and presidential candidates (as all good citizens) should support the rule of law in America and equal justice under law.
Nothing good comes from something that starts out as a criminal conspiracy to break US laws. Sen. McCain is flat wrong on this. Ignore the law and conservative Republicans at your own peril Senator.
LomaAlta | 04.12.07 12:51 AM
Contrary to media establishment spin, McCain was DOA with the Republican base from the get go. The truth now is becomming apparent.

John McCain panders to illegal immigrants, enough said!
gary | 04.12.07 07:27 AM
To the Republican base that opposes McCain and threatens not to vote if he is the nominee could they please consider the following:
McCain-Feingold- I realize that it curbs free-speech before elections, but I also lived in NYC pre-McCain Feingold during the Lazio/Clinton campaign. The smear campaign that was hoisted upon poor Lazio the final weeks before the election by unidentified hypocrat operatives was disgusting. Something had to give.
THe Gang of FOurteen- I was pretty angry about that too at the time. But let's be honest, now that Repubs have lost both Houses isn't it better that we didn't eliminate the fillibuster rule with federal nominees.
Immigration-I know this is a very tough issue. No Republican should feel ashamed for being ambivalent about their views on curbing illiegal immigration first. One only have to look at Europe where immigrants from India have to return to India every six months to renew their status, to understand that the US is far more progressive towards immigants than the "liberal" EU.
HOWEVER, Immigrants here are a trmendously large voting block, they have children who are already citizens and vote.
Second given the scary society we live in, we can't just have 12 million unregistered aliens, it is not safe for us or for them.
Last my husband's dollars and cents perspective on this is that our economy needs the immigrants here as Europe should open its borders to Turkey.
Given all of this there has to be compromise. It is simply unrealistic to expect to that resolving the illiegal immigration problem will happen without some form of path to citizenship. Perhaps the base and McCain should come to compromise, rather than have Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or even Rudy GUilianin resolve it for us.
Legislating requires compromise. As a legislator protecting the insitutions of the Congress, ie through the the Gang of 14 and forging compromise is the essence of a legislator's job. You may not like it but McCain HAS been a very Good legislator.
NOw we need a VERY GOOD President. If you stay home Barack Obama and/or Hillary Clinton will make immigration policy and it will not be citizneship in 10 years and paying some back taxes, it will probably be citizenship in six months and we will create an agency to pay the taxes for you.
Just as McCain made for a good soldier, he made for a good legislator, I have to believe that he would honorably represent the Republican Party as President.
Last and most important, this election will once again be a refernedum on Iraq and the fight over whether the work of 200,000 military personnel will have been for naught. Today, as the US poitical campaign heats up terrorists hit inside the Greeen Zone. Don't you know that Barack Obama will call this more evidence of defeat and reason for withdrawal. All the work that the surge has accom;lished in settling down portions of Bagdad could all be for naught, because one guy could sneak in a wreak havoc.
Our military can't win this fight unless the terrorists know that the US public's resolve will not waiver with the election of a new President in 2008. The ONLY candidate who can relay that message is John McCain.
You don't get immigration policy or judicial nominees unless you have a strong commander-in-chief. McCain is the one Republican or Democrat candidate that we can trust on this.
If we can't fight next to our soldiers in Iraq and Afghan to show these terrorists our resolve, the least we can do is compromise, and vote our resolve on the most important issue of our generation--whether the US will cave to terrorism.
JAZ | 04.12.07 09:42 AM
I love it when conservatives get hysterical about immigration, it's always good for a laugh. It's also funny when they make comments about the EU that reveal they don't have any clue what they're talking about.

John McCain is going to end up in jail over this. Go see the beginning. He promised to help me - instead, he sent his GESTAPO GOONS to my Home to scare the life out of me and my Family. THEY AMBUSHED US - GUNS POINTED AT ME AND MY CHILDREN - IN OUR FRONT YARD.
ALL BECAUSE I ASKED HIM A QUESTION...

I'm a staunch Republican and I'm very tired of
McCain criticizing our current government and Bush. He says he will fix what is broken!
Each time I hear him talk this way it makes me think I do not want to vote for him. He needs to be loyal to our Republican President. I personally think Bush is doing a GREAT job. McCain needs to stop it now!

Can you tell me Senator McCain why my husband has had such misfortune the last 15 years in the Mental Health Area? All he has ever wanted to do is help people in his profession. Speaking as 2 people who voted for you in New Port Richey, FL, can you tell us why we have been moved to this beautiful area 2 months ago only for my husband to get fired today? After our money has been spent moving here, etc. Is there ANY justice for mean and malicious employers. He was released from Bay Care West Hospital as an LCSW. In his spare time, he has always loved boxing and appreciated your standup for the sport.

John McCain needs to back off on amnisty for illegals, take a good look at the Fairtax (The current system is killing me financially.) I also think his stand on waterboarding is simply a pet peeve of his because of his experience in Viet Nam. Anybody who would possibly let thousands of people die because he would not allow waterboarding is not a person I want protecting America. He needs to publically state a more conservative position, or he will loose many republican votes. I am a conservative republican who wants a conservative reopublican in office.

I am a Republican But I will never vote for John McCain, we are a nation of laws and when you break them you should pay for it. Pass a law that if you give a job to an Illegal, You will get a 10.000 dollar fine for each one and every time. We would not need the fence and there would be a river of Illegals heading home in two weeks.

About McCain's Disclosures:
Greetings Chief Justice Ronald M. George:
This is a follow up to the filing I submitted a couple months ago, on “CD,” which I confirmed your receipt of. Thank you. In connection with the CLE part of my application, I present the enclosed “CD” of law intelligence, which I appreciate your 05-19-05 personal invitation to me to submit to you in connection with Uniting Branches – A tort Duty.
As an introduction to my debriefing, I first reference one of my many references:
Ex 02-08-08 Cover Page from Pamela J. Harbour (FTC Commissioner) to me.
Second, owing to deep problems in connection the art of void orders & void contracts, I have formatted a simple body of law on those points. Here is a preview:
“A void (Gas Cas) judgment is not entitled to the respect accorded a valid adjudication, but may be entirely disregarded, or declared inoperative by any tribunal in which effect is sought to be given to it. It is attended by none of the consequences of a valid adjudication. It has no legal or binding force or efficacy for any purpose or at any place. ... It is not entitled to enforcement ... All proceedings founded on the void judgment are themselves regarded as invalid.”
"A void judgment does not create any binding obligation.” Federal decisions addressing void state court judgments include Kalb & Ex parte Rowland.
After having personally eye-witnessed a series of acts based on facially void orders, it is clear that this topic & body of law is ripe for clarification, via broad publication.
For example, when a court, like Judges William Mud – Robert T. – J. Remke contract to strip ones civil rights by A) pretending to have jurisdiction over an action federally dismissed; B) pretending to be vested with power to enter a private contract with a prisoner, under its “Crown authority,” masked as “The People v.____,”; and C) fraudulently publishing that fraud, calculating to set a chain of character assassination attacks in motion, personal liability triggers.
Third, I have personally eye-witnessed a deep epidemic of British Arrest first, ask questions later, pretending to honor due process, calculating automatic rejects of defense presentations, & void rubber stamping of Article 3 Standing-less witch hunts. These judicially sponsored crimes are properly addressed by employing the “original jurisdiction” clause, invoking one’s U.S. Supreme Court’s Original Jurisdiction, which is what part of my enclosed “CD” CLE presentation details, for We The People & the formally trained alike. If you have any ideas about how to best present my programs, I welcome your input!

John needs to stand up with the majority of good ole` average Americans and address what has to be done with illegal immigration. We are not just talking about our southern border--but all boarders. The federal handouts must stop- the average American is having a hard enough time as it is, just trying to be honest, productive, responsible citizens. It is a true slap in the face for most everyone to see all the gov.programs that cater to these illegals. Most problems America is having now can be attributed to overpopulation. There comes a time, and that should have been yesterday, that our country sets a very high criteria for who we will let into our home.

Mr. Mccain, my husband and I are republicans, although we don't agree with all your political views, especially where illegals are concerned. they are fellons and the government is not enforcing our laws but have said that it is important to have a running mate who is well known and well qualified and he can help you turn this country around and guide it in the right direction which it deserves. We believe Mitt Romney is the person to answer that call. He's a strong candidate and will help you win the presidency. Mr. and Mrs Hugh Brewster, Pa.

Then I saw a photo of the presidential candidates standing at attention while the Star Spangled Banner, our national anthem played. mr. McCain, you have my vote. I believe you truly love this country.

Rupublican elect John McCain,
Let me suggest that you keep your nose out of the business of State Republican politics, particularly in North Carolina. Linda Daves and every other Republican Chairman has the responsibility to their own constituancies. They are operating responsibly in telling the truth about Obama. Obama's skin color has nothing to do with the criticism of Daves, along with the rest of the North Carolina voters. Its unfortunate that such a militarily courageous man as yourself lacks similar political courage. You are more concerned about Democratic swing votes than red-blooded Republican base votes.
Bruce Snavely | 04.25.08 12:28 PM
John McCain, please get some back bone and quit pandering to the democrats.
I agree with North Carolina, everything they have said is true. Get over the race problem!
Ignore the attacks and get your message out. Or, is there one?

[My] Sovereign immunity holds that a sovereign is superior to all in authority and power. It prevents, in advance, a suit or prosecution against a sovereign, being a monarch, ruler, or government, without the sovereign's consent – that means Me!
In politics, a defector is a person who gives up allegiance to one state or political entity [like the U.S. Constitution] in exchange for allegiance to another [like a Bear Flag desertion State Troop Milita Business op RICO job]. McCain is the worst Republican candidate in my lifetime. He says he won't drill for oil in the Grand Canyon or the Arctic. Well Senator, no one is asking you to drill in the Grand Canyon. And he says he is going to protect these preserves, "national treasures." Someone should explain to the Senator that the American people are the national treasure of this country.
He should just put a D after his name and be done with it.

If John Mc Cain wants to win all he needs to do is to make the decision to drill for our own oil in Montana, Alaska, and Florida...the Chinese are drilling 50 miles off Key West, FL!!!!The American people are ready for nuclear energy and oil drilling now...that is something B.O. will never do...John must realize that the majority of us want to save the planet's inhabitants (not the spotted owl) before we can save the planet. DO IT NOW...WE CANNOT AFFORD NOT TO!!!

IS THIS WHAT WE WANT FOR A PRESIDENT?
PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW AND SOME YOU DON'T
I sure hope this gets around before Nov

Hot on the heels of his explanation for why he no longer wears a flag pin, presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama was forced to explain why he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.
According to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171, During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.
"As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides," Obama said. "There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it."
WHAAAAAAAT!!!!!!!!!! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this could possibly be our next president. I, for once, am speechless

John - for Pete's sake, jump on Obamas' lies. See Dick Morris's daily release via Email that tells where to hit him and how. He gives sound advice even though he used to be Hillary's advisor.

Stick to the issues - nix negative campaign we are not interested - we believe the VP choice is crucial - my friends and family feel strongly that Mitt Romney is the man - we are not concerned that he is a Mormon as we were not concerned when Kennedy was elected President. Romney has moral and family values, looks like a leader, intelligent, outstanding demeanor, experience. We are afraid that the democratic candidate is going to give away the store. We are anxious to hear what the republican candidate will do to turn this country around. The low/middle income families are in big trouble. Issues: economy, the war, immigration, across the board taxation from our municipalities up, corporate greed, pork-barrel spending. Note that some people I know are not sure that they will even vote for President.

I receive a daily site every day from a Leah Rafaeli. She is in Israel. Today her message contained words concerning Mike Huckabee. It was a glowing report about him and his feelings concerning Israel and how just talking to their enemies would never solve the problem. They believe Mr.Huckabee is a "straight shooter". I hope Sen. McCain will consider him when he is looking for a V.P. Might really help.

John McCain is the last great American Patriot to run for the presidency. He fought for our country and our freedom and he paid the price. He is a warrior with true grit. There is nobody better qualified to run this country than John McCain.
