Edwards Finance Director Leaves

4th WriteThru...

There's been a change in the senior ranks of Ex-Sen. John Edwards.

Jennifer Swanson, Edwards's finance director, has left the campaign. Democratic fundraising sources said that Swanson announced her decision to leave late last week, about two weeks into the second fundraising quarter. Swanson was not fired, sources said.

Late Thursday, Swanson posted this little-noticed blog item on Edwards's website:

Hello, everyone. First, thank you again for everything you did to make our first quarter a success. Our campaign gains momentum every day as more and more Americans learn about John Edwards and his bold plans to change America. I want to take a moment to announce that I will be moving on from my job as National Finance Director of the campaign and that Brian Mixer has been named the new Director. I joined the campaign to lead the finance team through the first critical quarter of this year, knowing I couldn't move to Chapel Hill, but I couldn't be more pleased to be giving you the news that Brian is going to be doing this job! Brian and I have worked together for John and Elizabeth for a number of years and have been committed to this cause with you for a long time. He returned to Team Edwards earlier this year to head the Edwards NY fundraising effort after a brief hiatus to attend Wharton Business School. Having worked with Brian for so long, I can't overstate how much I admire his commitment and all the work he has done here. Please join me in wishing him the best as he goes to Chapel Hill to lead the staff effort there and to work with all of you around the country. Again, I want to thank you for all your support and look forward to continuing to be involved in John Edwards' campaign to build the America we all believe in.

Swanson was chief of staff of Edwards's finance dept. in '04. Loyal to the Edwards family and close to both Elizabeth and John Edwards, Swanson was among those senior Edwards staffers who was unable to move to North Carolina. Both Edwardses were happy with Swanson's performance as finance director, the sources said.

Brian Mixer, a former fundraising for ex-VA Gov. Mark Warner, starts shortly as the new finance director.

Swanson is a former deputy finance director of the DCCC.

An Edwards spokesman said the blog post spoke for itself. [MARC AMBINDER]

Is it David Mixner (Edwards donor/gay author and activist) or Brian Mixer (Edwards staffer/business school student) who is in charge?

genuinely, who really cares. what needs to be addressed re: the super rich edwardes is their arrogant rudeness toward their poor neighbor. old mr. edwards loves to compare himself to JESUS, but i have read the bible and JESUS said to love your neighbor as yourself. but, perhaps old man edwards hates himself. further, i want to know why a small super rich family like the edwardes needs a 29,000 sq. ft. house. how much do they spend each year on utilities for their supersized mansion? if old man edwards really wants to be like JESUS, then why doesn't he obey what JESUS told the the rich young ruler and that was to go sell all that you own and give it ALL to the poor. thats right old man edwards live what you preach.

joe | 04.16.07 09:55 AM

They are trying to disguise it, but, the edwards campaign is continuing to fall apart! It never really got started. THANK GOD!

Major | 04.16.07 10:30 AM

I question the timing!

Chris | 04.16.07 10:50 AM

Who gives a rats ass? Edwards is a joke.

Christopher John Richardson | 04.16.07 11:23 AM

Fundraising - So easy, that a caveman can do it.

Motley | 04.16.07 11:56 AM

Looks like she was given the boot. But obviously, she won't admit it.

Samson | 04.16.07 12:02 PM

PC speak run amok. She got canned.

ctmaryanne | 04.16.07 12:11 PM

Joe,
Why knock a guy who worked to get what he has. You may not like him, but Edwards played the game within the rules and built a successful life for himself. If you're so concerned about the poor, Joe, you could sell your computer and give the money to the poor.

....But that would mean you couldn't write diatribes about pols. you don't like anymore. :)

Frank | 04.16.07 12:48 PM

It seems Jennifer Swanson did a very commendable job; especially when on considers that Obama and Clinton have been sucking the oxygen (finances) out of the campaign universe.

Commendable indeed, when all of the press for the last six months has been about Obama and Clinton. Contributors look at this when they write their checks. What Ms. did was establish an agreesive pursuit of those dollars.

I don't even know this woman. But look at the effort.

Riley Grimes | 04.16.07 12:52 PM

"Why knock a guy who worked to get what he has. You may not like him, but Edwards played the game within the rules and built a successful life for himself."

Give me a break. Edwards was a lawyer. He created NOTHING. He built NOTHING. He added NOTHING in terms of value to the economy. The trash lawsuits he broguth did NOTHING except grab money from people who earned it honestly.

Dave 5000 | 04.16.07 01:02 PM

I'll bet Swanson quit. Perhaps she quit because of Edward's wife's rude and inappropriate comments. Elizabeth has created a major twit within the "family" with her rude anti-poor comments about her neighbor. Talk about a "Karma Killer!"
Swanson's job was becoming impossible. How do you raise money from the folk that your team members verbally abuse?
Those that didn't know much about the Edwards, are learning.

JR | 04.16.07 01:04 PM

Hey Joe..
Why take out your disappointment in your own failures in life on someone who has worked hard to help people? You sound very bitter Joe. Very sad.

Danny Del Rossi | 04.16.07 01:08 PM

Hmmm ... perhaps it was her conscience speaking. Edwards earned his $$$ by conning juries based on now-disproved junk science. He's personally responsible for thousands of c-section scars [you'll need to find the details for yourself!]

The_Libertarian | 04.16.07 01:32 PM

OK Joe and the rest of you mean-spiritied people. How much do you contribute to the poor and homeless? What have you done for society? for your country? And why are you available during the day to be writing these mean-spirited blogs. You would be the first to run to the unemployment line should you become jobless all the while screaming "I am entitled! I am entitled"! To use a phrase my mother would have washed my mouth out for using "SHUT UP."

Marie | 04.16.07 01:36 PM

First: This is Brian Mixer, not David Mixner.

"Fundraising - So easy, that a caveman can do it." Yeah right. As a political professional I can tell you fundraising is one of those most exhausting and grueling parts of politics. It's not an easy business. I know plenty of finance directors who get ulcers and go on medication but keep working because they believe in their candidate.

Jennifer Swanson wasn't fired. She is a well-known and very successful fundraiser who did some explosive work for the DNC before she joined Edwards.

"Give me a break. Edwards was a lawyer. He created NOTHING. He built NOTHING. He added NOTHING in terms of value to the economy."

Edwards not only saved and protected lives, but he was instrumental in changing the laws on the books to make this a safer place. For example, trucking companies that based bonuses on how quickly drivers completed the job. In other words, we'll pay you to speed and not sleep. And sure enough, when a trucker killed a family, Edwards changed the laws and the trucking companies don't do that anymore.

There are another hundred examples. You don't have to like Edwards, but know a little about the guy and his case work before you get so angry. Keep it politics, not personal

Cameron | 04.16.07 01:39 PM

Prince Panderer of the Piedmont IS still in the race?

Yikes.

QUESTION HILLARY | 04.16.07 01:39 PM

Poor neighbor ?
His neighbor is selling his property for $1.4 million . Plus , read the interview about the guy. He does have a bunch of junked cars strewn about his front yard. I don't know of any middle class hoods that would let people dump junkers on their front lawns. Joe must be from the Hillary people.

Jason | 04.16.07 01:44 PM

"He does have a bunch of junked cars strewn about his front yard."

He rents space to an auto repair shop, genius.

Get your facts straight, or get off the board.

QUESTION HILLARY | 04.16.07 01:49 PM

John Edwards is useless, and she knew it. She was probably tired of working for this phony!

Robert Stubbs | 04.16.07 02:09 PM

Yeah genius, It's still his front lawn. He rents his garage out to a mechanic (who leaves junkers out), lives in a singlewide trailer, because the house is too rundown to live in. He spray painted a huge "Go Giuliani " on his fence to agravate his neighbors. Not a sign.I don't know very many folks that would like this Millionaire living next to them. How can the guy be poor ? he's worth over a million. Read the article Hillary.

Jason | 04.16.07 02:09 PM

My sympathy goes out to the Edwards family. I also live next door to an armed lunatic with a persecution complex and lousy personal hygiene.

Orville | 04.16.07 02:20 PM

The Mr. Edwards who cares so much for me and you "THE PEOPLE." I didn't realize that haircuts were less that FOUR HUNDRED BUCKS...Oh you don't own a TWENTY THOUSAND square foot home. I am so sick of these arrogant asses...Gotta go and fiqure out how much I owe in taxes.

jj | 04.16.07 02:26 PM

I am an armed lunatic in a run down house with junk cars in the front yard and Edwards is too conservative for me. Eat your spinach and vote Kucinich.

blue collard | 04.16.07 02:38 PM

I'm confused.

Is the John Edwards who is running for President the same John Edwards who was a Senator from North Carolina?

Yossel | 04.16.07 02:51 PM

Whether you agree with John Edwards or not politically, why disparage his education, professional competence, and achievement? Do you do the same for corporate heads who walk away with hundreds of millions? Isn't is possible to disagree with someone regarding politics, or even religion, without trying to scour their souls?

The culture of outrage and resentment keeps people tearing at their wounds so that they can feel control. Unfortunately, it results in gore on the floor but no solutions or even a discussion of possibles.

You don't like John Edwards? You think he spends too much for haircuts? I agree, but he also is out there every day, trekking from place to place, proposing solutions to make your life better instead of sitting at his computer ripping apart every fact that hits the blog.

Mary Scoles | 04.16.07 03:04 PM

Look up Ambulance Chaser or Pettifogger and you will find a picture of John Edwards.

John Edwards is a charlatan, who made money in medical malpractice cases. He did this because the American Jury system enables him to exclude those potential members of the jury who might not be swayed by his appeal to emotion. Facts who needs Facts when when you can channel the thoughts of a crippled baby in the birth canal.

I do thank God that Edwards like John, I was in Vietnam Kerry, will not be president.

Not a Yank | 04.16.07 03:50 PM

Now Joe you sound like a bitter person, if you are going to criticize the rich there is only one guideline to follow: Make sure they are the rich snobby conservatives/republican type. Then most of the bloggers will mindlessly agree with you and if you throw in a couple “Bush lied” remarks they raise you to saint hood status. The Democrats treat the poor like mistresses, Love to have them around for the party (elections) but won’t bring them home to the parents when the dance is over (Words of wisdom from Al Sharpton). Edwards is out of touch with America, which makes him a perfect democratic candidate.
Oh, what was the original story about? Right, who cares…..

Stan | 04.16.07 03:59 PM

This is it? This is the news? This man is a totalitian statist and all we get from you the "People Magizine" class news. How about a story on why people like this are taken seriously in the first place?

If common sense were still alive, everyone would would have seen him as a joke the first time around.

Curt409 | 04.16.07 04:23 PM

Mary,
John Edwards is a true waste of time, oxygen, and numerous other items I care not to list. He made his money through junk-science and jury pandering. He did nothing of note while in the Senate or working in his home State. Although his idea of two worlds in America if true - I/We live in the real world. Viva Mitt Romney.

Rusty | 04.16.07 04:33 PM

Didn't the Edwards family just build this enormous house? I'm sure the man with the junk cars in his yard was there before they bought the property. Why complain now -- nuff said!

MWalsh | 04.16.07 04:36 PM

boy, did i strike some raw nerves. typical of nasty liberals to hate the truth. they duck the the truth by attempting to cast aspersions on others character whom they know nothing about. it is imcombent on all americans to hold those seeking elected office to a higher standard. especially those who compare themselves to JESUS and attempt to mislead people into believing that they feel the pain of the poor in this country and therefore are somehow sainted to speak. all i did was talk about issues that were brought up in the mainstream news media. i didn't even mention his $400 haircut or all the questions being asked about his sexuality.

joe | 04.16.07 05:00 PM

Problem with Edwards is that he's a recycled Quayle.

almanader | 04.16.07 05:01 PM

Marie:

Unemployment is not an entitlement. Unemployment funds are withheld from all employees and contributed by employers for use by those employees in the event of a job loss. Only those who have contributed are eligible to receive, and the vast majority of people never receive the money that they have paid.

And yes, there are two Americas: the America of John Edwards, and the America of those of us who have a real job.

Bob Devlin | 04.16.07 05:03 PM

\Edwards didn't "work to get what he has". He's a slip-and-fall ambulance chaser, meaning he stole it from others who worked for it (and their insurance companies). As far as playing the game within the rules, that's true enough, but he's also part of the cabal that repeatedly stops cold any attempts to make the "game" fair and rational (lawyers). Lawyers like Edwards are nothing short of high-tech thieves.

joeyb | 04.16.07 05:54 PM

MAry, Corporate heads aren't running for President, John is. He is not trying to make our lives better, he is trying to make his life better. He is on an unbeliveable ego trip. I knw, he was my senator for 6 years, showed up for work for 3 of those years. He couldn't get elected to anything in NC now, we know him. Good to see his campaign is imploding. I wonder if Swanson was behind soliciting well wishers to Elizabeth for campaign cash? For $400 haircuts of course!

Informed | 04.16.07 05:57 PM

Hey, Mary: I don't want John Edwards "proposing solutions to make (my) life better" because only I can do that. That's what you stupid liberals don't seem to understand: POLITICIANS CAN'T MAKE YOUR LIFE BETTER. Get it?

Jack | 04.16.07 06:43 PM

The democrats are supposed to be all about the poor, seems this poor man lived there long before the Edwards did, it also sounds as though at one time this was a rural area where you see that sort of thing [junky yards] all the time, we live in a rural area so I see it all the time, maybe the Edwards should have built there home elsewhere, instead they chose to build next to this man, they knew he was going to be there neighbor so they should not be complaining now, if this man is able to sale his property for a million then I say good for him!! Instead of gripping about this guy, these so called concerned democrats, and there claim to care about the poor should have gone over to him to see if they could help him, instead of ridiculing him in the paper.

Debra | 04.16.07 07:57 PM

John Edwards doesn't believe in Jesus. He is a liberal trial lawyer. He hates Christians. He would never want to be like Jesus. He said disgusting things about Christians through two of his press (blogger) people. He might as well have directed them to do it because he agreed with what they wrote. He wouldn't fire them. They had to run and hide when the majority Christian nation smacked them down.

The Clinton people are busy here writing this crap against Edwards. Now I know where her money is going, attacking Edwards in the BLOG HOUSE and why, because she is more afraid of Edwards then OBOMA. So what if Mr. Edwards got some one else to take care of his money, it happens all the time, I'm a banker I should know, not the Hillery BLOGGERS. I'm backing Edwards with my MONEY, not the crap Hillery's toilet brigade is writing. TONT SACCO

tony sacco | 04.17.07 05:04 AM

Mr. Sacco please do not call me a Clinton supporter, boy have you ever got it wrong, I am a Reagan Republican hoping that Fred Thompson decides to throw his hat into the ring. You must be a Rosie O'Donnell fan, your both into conspiracy theories, all I am saying is Mr. Edwards and his wife both new when they built there home on that property who there neighbor was going to be, so they have no right to complain now. An it is very likely the neighbor is a decent guy, and just because he is a republican, as usual the liberal socialist elitist democrats try to make him out as a gun carrying, backwoods, uneducated hayseed.

Debra | 04.17.07 09:37 AM

Just what this country needs ... a President who obsesses over his hair! Meanwhile Elizabeth looks like she cuts her own.

These people creep me out. And yes, I'm a Democrat.
