Hotline After Dark -- The Day After Edition

There was a hodge podge of topics on TV last night -- from immigration to VP Cheney to Paris Hilton but the big political interview was John Edwards on "Hardball":

On Elizabeth's call to Ann Coulter: "Elizabeth made this decision on her own to call in."

More: "I applaud Elizabeth. I think that when people like Ann Coulter -- and it's not just her, unfortunately, it's her and people just like her, Karl Rove and all those people. I mean, when they engage us in this kind of hate-mongering, you have to stand up to them. You have to stand up to them."

He continues: "I feel the need to point out this woman didn't just use it against me. I mean, the things she said about Senator Obama, the things she said about Senator Clinton, they all fall in the same category. And they're calculated to create an emotional response. They're calculated to make people hate. And if you don't speak out against it, then that means you're tolerating this kind of language and it means you think it's OK. It's not OK."

MSNBC's Matthews: "Can you dismiss this as hate speech and negativity and debasing of the political process and at the same time have your campaign use the comments made by Ann Coulter to raise money? It's clearly part of your Web site e-mail campaign solicitation effort now. Two e-mails have gone out now to raise money off of Ann Coulter's attacks on you and your family. Do you think you can do both, attack her and exploit her?"

Edwards: "Here's what I think. I think that we can say to America that we're not going to tolerate this kind of behavior, we're not going to tolerate this kind of hate language and we're going to stand up and we're going to fight. And if we ask Americans, other good Americans to join us in standing up and being strong, there's nothing wrong with that. And that's exactly what we're asking them to do. And I hope there'll be lots of people who will join us in standing up and doing the right thing."

Asked how much they've raised from it: "I don't know the numbers. I hope they go up. I hope we get more and more people who join us in this cause because this is important" (MSNBC, 6/27). [EMILY GOODIN]

Good job by Edwards. Too bad Chris Matthews didn't ask a real question. "Do you think you can do both, attack her and exploit her?"

Well let's see, Chris: Ann bragged to you about how calling John Edwards a "faggot" earlier this year is helping to sell her awful books. But then she boo-hooed about how Elizabeth Edwards was trying to keep her from selling, or even writing, her awful books.

Which is it? Why should people like Coulter, Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh, etc. play victim when Elizabeth Edwards stands up and shows that bullying doesn't work?

And someone should ask Chris why having Ann Coulter on just because "she sells books" is a good reason to give her airtime.

Mr Edwards represent the average male in the US and the West. And Ann Coulter exposes these males who have given power to their wives, while they play of the role of servitude to these unstable women. She also exposes liberals for what they really are, idiots wanting control of others.

Shame on Man Coulter who represents hate which is form of terrorism. Shame on Hardball and GMA too since they give platform to this sort of hate speech. Everyone who supports Coulter needs to look into mirror and think who they will feel if someone wishes death on them or bring a dead child in political discussion or if their spouse was killed in 9/11 attack and then Coulter says that they desereved it. What country are we living in? Is it US or Afganistan ruled by Taliban?

Chris Matthews is a wimp! He was afraid to confront Coulter and her boorish behavior. Why did he and his station give her a forum to act out her schtick? Maybe they miss Imus.

these males who have given power to their wives

I see "the right-wing cult of contrived masculinity" has reared its ugly head.

The above comment suggests that Edwards isn't actually weak, but simply feminizes him as with all male Democratic or liberal political leaders. This comment is a good example of the fake, empty, masculine "courage" and power that George Bush likes to portray.

She also exposes liberals for what they really are

No, she doesn't. She serves a purpose for the right wing: "She takes liberal males, emasculates them, depicts them as "faggots" and weak losers, and thereby makes the throngs of weak and insecure followers who revere her feel masculine and strong. There is no way that the right-wing movement can shun her because what she does is indispensible to the entire spectacle. What she does is merely a more explicit re-inforcement of every central theme which the right-wing movement embraces."
