Weyrich: Dobson Won't Back Huckabee
National Journal Contributing Editor Linda Douglass reports that Paul Weyrich, founder of the Free Congress Foundation and co-founder of the Moral Majority, told her today that he saw an email from James Dobson in which Dobson "denies ferociously that he has decided to endorse (Mike) Huckabee."
"He said it was made up," Weyrich told Douglass. "He has no idea who came up with this, but he is trying to stop it."
Weyrich reiterated to Douglass that Dobson's denial was "in ferocious terms."
Weyrich, who is supporting Mitt Romney's presidential bid, would not say to whom Dobson's email was addressed and said he no longer had the email.
Much has been made this week of the fractured nature of a trio of presidential endorsements from leaders of the religious right. Pat Robertson announced his support for Rudy Giuliani in Washington earlier this week, and John McCain's campaign trotted out Sam Brownback in Iowa. Huckabee, widely regarded as a more suitable ideological fit for Robertson, Weyrich and Brownback, was left scrambling to explain his inability to draw their support.
Dobson, Focus on the Family founder, remains a critical get for the leading Republican candidates. Each is working to cast himself as the candidate who will best represent the interests of evangelical voters. With the fractured nature of this week's endorsements, could Dobson tip the balance of favor among Christian voters to one candidate?

This is a lie. Weyrich is working with Mitt Romney who will do anything right now to get evangelicals to support him, inclduing attempts to buy endorsements from the evangelical leaders. I don't believe Weyrich's story for one second. I wouldn't be surprised if in the near future Weyrich purchases a new home with the money he has received from his new best friend. Sad to see a guy sell his soul for a flip flopper who refuses to address his faith. Shame on you Weyrich and Romney. I pray Dr. Dobson does not fall for your tricks.

Mr. Dobson really has no choice but to endorse Mitt Romney. He has already publicly denounced supporting Giuliani, Thompson, or McCain. Mitt Romney is the ONLY candidate left that has the ability to run a national campaign and beat the democrats. Supporting a 3rd Party Candidate would utterly hand the White House to the democrats because conservatices MUST rally together in this election when the nominee is chosen in order to beat the democrats. Mitt Romney's the best candidate by far despite his recent shifts on some issues. For me, personally, I find it refreshing to see a politician change his mind about something instead of holding firm on a bad belief.

Why does Paul Weyrich feel compelled to comment? Is he Dobson's self appointed spokesman? Mr. Weyrich "Would not say to whom the email was addressed too" and "no longer had the email." How ridiculous and disappointing. Thank you Mr. Weyrich, for so convincingly setting the record straight, you are obviously are a very credible and impartial source. Mr. Dobson is lucky to have a friend like you, and the public is so fortunate to have the Hotline to report this "ferocious" story!

I will be very disappointed in Dr. Dobson if he chooses not to back Mike Huckabee for President.
Dr. Dobson has much clout with family oriented conservatives and it would be a shame if he threw his values out the window to settle for another candidate who doesn't share his values.
Dr. Dobson's choice, whether he likes it or not, will define him and his christian walk to this point. I have faith that he'll make the right decision.

We're spreading the word about this sudden change of heart by Paul Weyrich. I agree with the first post, there may have been some money handed under the table, or maybe Romney promised a huge donation is exchange of an endorsement. Read these quotes below:
December 28th, 2006
"Governor Romney is going to make an attempt to sound like us," said Weyrich. "[But] I don't think he is; I don't think he's the genuine article. And I think he really ought to be closely examined, especially for the flip-flops he now claims he's done on abortion, on same-sex marriage, on any number of issues -- including hate crimes, by the way."
Weyrich, who has been involved in politics for decades, says twice Governor Huckabee had him "on the seat of his chair" during a recent forum. According to Weyrich, the former Baptist preacher "can speak like no other candidate. He is dynamic, he is exciting, he believes in all the right things," says Weyrich in describing the Arkansas governor.

THIS SAYS IT ALL...
That came directly from the Paul Weyrich's mouth 11 months ago. He DID NOT trust Mitt Romney. Now all of a sudden Weyrich has the audacity to endorse Mitt Romney? This is a disgrace. Don't trust Romney!

But who will Weyrich endorse?
There is some ideological and personell overlap between Weyrich's Free Congress Foundation and Rep. Ron Paul. Paul spoke at the FCF's conference this summer and some of the FCF writers also contribute to Lewrockwell.com, which is the biggest pro-Paul site on the web.
Is Weyrich waiting to endorse Paul? Is he in the pay of Romney? Only time will tell, and both of them could use a solid endorsement for Weyrich, who is still a pretty influential conservative.

Mr. Weyrich a "pretty influential conservative"? Only with someone who is not paying attention.

The heavily funded evangelical organizations are in a real dilemma. They cannot risk alienating the business community, regardless of how resonable the positions a candidate takes on the environment, tax policy, or education, unless it calls for reduction in all taxes, or at least those that business would be responsible
However, grassroots evangelicals want real solutions, not hyperbole and they want genuine candidates, which explains the Huckabee appeal and if those organizations such as Focus on the Family or FRC endorse someone like Gov Romney they risk a tremendous backlash from the grassroots, that are already weary of the political emphasis over evangelical messaging

Dear Evangelicals,
You know how many of you said that you would walk away from the republican party because of Rudy?
Well, many others feel the same way about Hucksterbee.

Mike Huckabee is the only Christian candidate with values and beliefs that are in line with those of Dr. Dobson.
They are both solid, well respected men of high character and morality, having both contributed greatly to our families and our country.
