Trouble For HRC, Romney In New Globe Poll
Barack Obama is out front in a Boston Globe survey of New Hampshire voters released today. Meanwhile, in the most stunning revival of the cycle, John McCain is within a few points of Mitt Romney, the once solid frontrunner who with his Iowa campaign floundering must win New Hampshire to keep his hopes alive.
Obama 30%
Hillary Clinton 28%
John Edwards 14%
Bill Richardson 7%
Romney 28%
McCain 25%
Rudy Giuliani 14%
As if the numbers weren't exciting enough for the McCain team, there's this analysis in the Globe story ... Doesn't get much better two weeks out ...
"Republicans talked about the John McCain deathwatch back in the summer," said Andrew E. Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, which conducted the Globe poll. "He's back to the John McCain of 2000."
The Globe indicates that the race in the first-in-the-nation primary state is still wide open, however, with about 40 percent of likely voters in each party undecided.
The survey of 422 likely Democratic voters and 410 likely Republican voters in New Hampshire, conducted from Dec. 16 to Dec. 20, has a margin of error for each party subsample of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

I like Romney, I like McCain. I wish they'd run together rather than attack each other.
I'm leaning toward Romney. He's a new voice, a fresh face. He's seems to be the best all-around candidate. Taxes, immigration, the war, fiscal responsibility, social issues (at least his current stances)--he doesn't seem to have a weakness.
But I *like* McCain. He's got character, but that's not enough. My Grandfather has character in spades, but I wouldn't trust him to run the country. Sorry Grandpa.

Romney has changed his positions on social issues, but if you look at his record you can see that he helped move forward some pro life legislation and supported some pro life positions years ago. He was always a moderate on the issue not some pro abortion ideologue. The top issue in the election in 2008 is not going to be abortion though. It is going to be the economy and regardless of what you think of his social positions he is clearly the best guy to manage the economy of any candidate running in either party. Neither Huckabee or McCain will be able to win on that issue.

If Huckabee takes Iowa, McCain takes New Hampshire -- Romney is toast. Giuliani supporters will start to break for McCain.
Giuliani could still pick up enough delegates to give McCain an endorsement and the win prior to the convention.

This comes down to Iowa. If Shillary loses in Iowa, then those"independents" will vote her way in NH. That will hurt McCain the most and help Mitt.
