She Hasn't Pumped Her Own Gas In Years
SOUTH BEND, IN -- Barack Obama wouldn't debate Hillary Clinton in a flat bed truck. But there she was today, sitting shotgun in one, driving home the argument that her rival doesn't share her concern about the average Joe Six-pack when it comes to fuel prices.
When Clinton's traveling press corps was told late last night that the candidate would be "commuting" to work with a "typical" Hoosier, the questions came rapid-fire. When was the last time Clinton pumped her own gas? When's the last time she even drove? And, most to the point, what was a stunt like this going to prove?
The message of the week, in both North Carolina and Indiana, has been Clinton's plan for a gas tax holiday. So the bit of showmanship was a creative way to keep reporters talking about it -- even as the story line and tepid back-and-forth grew stale.
And like all publicity stunts, it was transparent. The worker, Jason Wilfing, belongs to a union that has endorsed Clinton (though he maintained he is undecided). Rather than Clinton meeting Wilfing at his home, he came to her hotel to pick her up. Wilfing actually lives outside of South Bend in the town of Plymouth, 45-minutes away. Perhaps best of all, he wasn't even driving his own car. He had to borrow the pickup of his supervisor so that Secret Service could come for the ride, too.
"How could I say no to that?" Wilfing said of the invitation to drive the former first lady.
Clinton met with Wilfing's nuclear family - wife, daughter and two sons - at the hotel. Bobbie Wilfing talked about how gas prices have impacted their lives, from the extra costs of driving kids to school to possibly canceling an annual summer trip to Lake Michigan. Who's to blame? Wilfing said, "100 percent George Bush."
"We're ready?" Clinton said after bidding adieu to the wife and kids. The Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup was idling outside, with about a quarter-tank of gas waiting for refueling. Clinton buckled up right away, then drove along with Wilfing, 33, on residential roads, chatting and laughing as they went.
The logistics of the enterprise presented a challenge. Driving ahead of Clinton was a dirty-green GMC truck, with its rear doors lashed open. One network cameraman, shooting for all national outlets, joined local cameraman, two still photographers, and a couple print reporters crammed into the rear to chronicle it all from afar.
Meanwhile, all other outlets huddled outside on the chilly morning at the Marathon station (with some smarter reporters choosing to wait it out inside the mini mart). The campaign had the fill-up choreographed to a T, all the way to which specific pump they would use so that cameras could be in position when they arrived. Within the shot for many was the large sign displaying the $3.75-per-gallon price tag.
After the entire motorcade pulled up, Clinton waited inside just a few moments as Wilfing got out of the passenger side and started the pumping process. With cameras mobbed together, Clinton hopped out of the truck without incident and joined Wilfing at the pump. She seemed very interested in the actual set up, acknowledging later that she hasn't pumped her own gas in years.
For some reason, Clinton chatted with Wilfing so quietly it was as if they were at a library and not an outdoor fueling station. Eventually, a reporter shouted out a question, prompting Clinton to turn and launch into her stump on how the impact of high gas prices has impacted prices across the board for consumers.
"I think it's important we start trying to focus our attention on taking care of people like Mr. Wilfing and his family for a change," she said. "That's my passion in this campaign and going forward, we've gotta start getting our priorities straight. And this is a big wake-up call."
A few more questions followed, with Clinton staying on message, referring occasionally to Wilfing, who stood silently to her side. "This is a very complex problem that somebody needs to start unpacking, and begin to answer questions for people like Mr. Wilfing."
Clinton then shuffled off to go and pay her "exorbitant bill." While inside, she stopped at the coffee machine, struggling a bit to get it working before pouring a French Vanilla cappuccino. She handed the clerk $5 for the $1.23 drink, asking for her support at the same time.
Then back to the car for the final leg of their journey. This time, Clinton got on the phone to do a local radio interview, as Wilfing kept his focus on the road. Later, the car stopped to meet Wilfing's parents, who were waiting on the side of the road. They invited Clinton to check out the house the senior Wilfing had helped build. Clinton asked for a rain check, but said she did want to see some of their "pigs and chickens."
After another short trip, Clinton and Wilfing finally got to work. There, she spoke more at length about her plan to lower gas prices, take on big oil and begin taking steps to pressure OPEC nations to stop manipulating the oil market. She also paid tribute to the sheet metal workers standing alongside her in another pitch for the blue-collar vote.
"These are the people who make it possible for you to live in your homes, go to your workplace, actually live the way that we've gotten used to living in our country, the people who do the hard work," she said. "I don't think we're spending enough time recognizing the contributions of this kind of hard work."

I wish we could tax Hillarys hot air, maybe we could make a dent in the republican deficit.

Hmmmm I wonder if there would be a way for people commuting 6,000 lb pickup trucks to save money at the pump....it's amazing that a working class, whiskey drinking, shotgun shooting woman like Hillary hasn't pumped gas in years.

At least someone cares about the problems of ordinary people. They have gotten shot shrift over the last 8 years. Senator Clinton cares about economy, jobs, health care, education and energy. Senator Obama, on the other hand , is either defending or disowning his pastor.

Yes, that's all Obama wants to talk about, Rev. Wright. When people ask him about his policy plans he says, "Now wait a minute, I want to denounce this guy again."
DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

She has not paid for gas in many years. The Secret Service drives her everywhere and they pay the gas bill.

If you don't know that the huge amounts of money funding the Obama campaign to try and defeat Hillary Clinton is coming in from the insurance, and medical industry, that has been ripping you off, and killing you and your children. And denying you, and your loved ones the life saving medical care you needed. All just so they can make more huge immoral profits for them-selves off of your suffering...
You see, back in 1993 Hillary Clinton had the audacity, and nerve to try and get quality, affordable universal health care for everyone to prevent the suffering and needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of you each year. :-)
Approx. 100,000 of you die each year from medical accidents from a rush to profit by the insurance, and medical industry. Another 120,000 of you die each year from treatable illness that people in other developed countries don’t die from. And I could go on, and on...

DEBATE! DEBATE!! DEBATE!!!
It's time for everyone to face the truth. Barack Obama has no real chance of winning the national election in November at this time. His crushing defeat in Pennsylvania makes that fact crystal clear. His best, and only real chance of winning in November is on a ticket with Hillary Clinton as her VP.
Hillary Clinton seemed almost somber at her Pennsylvania victory speech. As if part of her was hoping Obama could have proved he had some chance of winning against the republican attack machine, and their unlimited money, and resources.
But it is absolutely essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse in November. America, and the American people are in a very desperate condition now. And the whole World has been doing all that they can to help keep us propped up.
Hillary Clinton say's that the heat, and decisions in the Whitehouse are much tougher than the ones on the campaign trail. But I think Mr. Obama faces a test of whether he has what it takes to be a commander and chief by facing the difficult facts, and the truth before him. And by doing what is best for the American people by dropping out of the race, and offering his whole hearted assistance to Hillary Clinton to help her take back the Whitehouse for the American people, and the World.
Mr. Obama is a great speaker. And I am confident he can explain to the American people the need, and wisdom of such a personal sacrifice for them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Hillary Clinton is fighting her heart out for the American people. She has known for a long time that Mr. Obama can not win this November. You have to remember that the Clinton's have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it takes.
If Mr. Obama fails his test of commander and chief we can only hope that Hillary Clinton can continue her heroic fight for the American people. And that she prevails. She will need all the continual support and help we can give her. She may fight like a superhuman. But she is only human.
Sen. Hillary Clinton: "You know, more people have now voted for me than have voted for my opponent. In fact, I now have more votes than anybody has ever had in a primary contest for a nomination. And it's also clear that we've got nine more important contests to go."
Sincerely

You are the very epitome of stupity. Stupid to the point of insanity. Hillary was not ready on day one to prevent Bill Clinton from getting blow jobs at the white house. How can she be ready for the bigger job at the white house. She had all the institutional support yet allowed Barack to out-organize and out-raise her in money terms. Ready on day one indeed. There is an old African adage, that 'if the market will be brisk during a particular day, look at how it begins in the morning'. Ready on day one, yet could not even beat a rookie politician like Barack. That a shame
Nana | 04.30.08 05:56 PM
Take away 20 to 25 million black voters, and take away another 17 to 20 million young voters. Take away another 10 to 15 million educated white voters. And you will be left with the remaining voters from an approximate 110 million pool of registered voters to be shared between macCain and Hillary. And tell me Obama is not a force to reckon with. Name one presidential candidate in the entire history of United States of America with 1.5 million registered contributors. You name me just one who was or is like Barack with that volume of contributors.

Hillary Clinton did try to pass a healthcare program at the beginning of her husband's first term. Her bumbling, stubborn effort to have healthcare her way kept any healthcare plan from being passed. Think of the people who could have had health care in the 14 years since then that she let down. Now she says she has learned from that experience but she is still out there stubbornly fighting to have healthcare her way and her way only.
I suspect she will let everyone down again if she is given a chance. It is one thing to say you have the best plan or the best commision or your fighting for someone but it is quite a different matter to get the job done.
It took the Democratic Party 8 years to recover from the Clinton excesses. Don't make the same mistake again. We're all back to where with started with a promise for healthcare.

Okay. Here's the worrisome thing. Imagine Bill Clinton as Houseboy on the loose in the White House again. Only this time, he has no responsibilities......Look out girlies.
By the way Jacksmith-- if you really cared about the working class you'd be outraged by the fact that Clinton was on the board for the anti- union Walmart for five years. You might also be offended by her support for NAFTA--which Bill championed. If you remember those CLinton days as good-- it maybe only because that was before the consequences of those actions fully took hold.
Can't even pump her own gas--- give me a break.

Who cares about the part about her pumping the gas? The real issue here is that Hillary could not work a friggin coffee machine, which requires pressing one button. How is she going to "obliterate" Iran when she can't even push a button correctly?
And why did she get a French Vanilla capuccino? Working class folks don't drink cappuccinos! She should have just gone down to the local Dunkin Donuts (or do they have Tim Horton's out there) and gotten a real coffee.

Jacksmith,
You ARE and idiot!!!
nick, houston | 04.30.08 10:30 PM
This guy is sorely misinformed if he thinks $3.75 gas is Bush's fault. Demand is higher from China and India, the supply is tight and many places that produce oil are unstable - Nigeria- causing prices to spike even more. The Superduty truck he's driving certainly plays a part in his gas bill.
Mike | 04.30.08 10:32 PM
My wife has never pumped her own gas. Why should Clinton be held to a different standard? Does anybody actually think that the First Babe (whether of the USA or the state of Arkansas) should drive to a self-service station and do her own pumping?
Pink Pig | 05.01.08 01:00 AM
I should add one further question. Is anybody in this interminable campaign going to raise a real issue, as an issue?
I can understand why the Democrats don't want to talk about Iraq right now, but how about health care? Are we destined to hear just one side of a complex question? Assuming of course that anybody wants to talk about it.
Here's a question to think about. Why is it that more than 50 years after Truman proposed to create nationalized medicine in the US (that was what it was called back then), and after dozens of countries in all parts of the world have adopted it, why is it that Americans are still opposed to it? Are their objections principled? Is there some substance to their doubts? Is it possible that wishes don't come true?
There would seem to be a lot of things worth considering, such as the very real (if vague) threat of unintended consequences, not to mention the dangers of corruption, skewed incentives, and a host of other things that might well arise. You're talking about people's lives here, not some bridge in a god-forsaken corner of the country.
Does anybody really think that the same government that banned sanitary toilets and is now trying its best to force us back into the gaslight era, can be trusted to implement an enormous project like national health care? How do you rate your chances under such a system?
Pink Pig | 05.01.08 01:24 AM
Canada, the UK, Germany, France and many other European countries have universal health-care systems that work.
Why can't the U.S.?
There's no problem in principle.
Neal J. King | 05.01.08 04:14 AM
Wow, people out in Indiana are even more gullible than this Northeasterner thought. HRC cares about you in the same way she cares for a favorite pet. You'll live a managed life with womb-to-tomb gubmint intervention every step of the way ... until it's time to put you down, because you are getting too old, or you pooped on the nice white carpet too many times.
A "gas tax holiday" is not going to work, because as soon as the federal government suspends their excise tax, fuel prices will creep up to negate it within weeks. Then, after labor day, when the tax goes back into effect, prices will jump and you morons will be screwed - just in time for winter.
Do you honestly believe that you can get something -- anything -- for nothing? Like I said, GULLIBLE.
Googootz | 05.01.08 04:40 AM
New Jersey prohibits self-service gas stations. There are folks from that fine state who've not pumped their own gas - ever, still. It's fun to watch them try when they're not in their home state... So Hillary! is OK on this one. Now, if she can get gas prices down to 50 cents a gallon...
Trent Meerkat | 05.01.08 05:53 AM
I grow tired of hearing the "Bill Clinton was responsible for all the economic expansion" bit. He most certainly was NOT. While not a personal favorite, Bush Sr. spurred that expansion with those tax increases that lost him a second term. Oh, and by the way, the dot com explosion had a lot to do with the economy at that point as well, and Bill had nothing to do with that.
Hillary Clinton is trying to have it both ways, she tries to say she was integral to Bill Clinton's success while attempting to distance herself from his failures. You can't have both.

You don't "sit" shotgun, you "ride" shotgun. As for gas prices, Democrats are determined to price carbon-based energy out of existence, and they are perfectly happy to wreck the economy in the process. They have nearly succeeded. Why doesn't someone ask Henry Waxman and Tom Davis why they slipped language into the 2007 energy bill which basically prohibits importation of Alberta Canada's oil from oil sands?

"While inside, she stopped at the coffee machine, struggling a bit to get it working before pouring a French Vanilla cappuccino."
Hey, it's the new Hillary talking point!
"I know a lot of you Americans are torn right now. You're attracted to Bush and his incompetence, but you're also attracted to Obama and his elitism. Well, I've got good news for you -- with me, you get both!"
NH Dem | 05.01.08 04:38 PM
Ah, elitism - one of Hill's many rallying cries to rescue what she believes America owes to her: the Presidency.
What's that? Hillary an elitist? Absolutely not. Her undergraduate education at the prestigious private university, Wellesly, and Ivy League, Yale, had nothing to do with her coming from an elite background herself. And even if it did, she's in touch with the working class; not like that other guy - you know: the one with the Islamic name who claims to be a Christian - not that he is a Christian, but if he was, he followed a pastor who blamed AIDS on the American Government and 9-11 on bad foreign policy.
Yeah!
And we don't follow people who go to church with people who think that just because the U.S. Government could infect black men with syphillus (and then let them die) that they could have also created AIDS in a laboratory; we don't follow people whose pastors criticize America's flawless foreign policy. We follow people who go to church with people like Pat Robertson and John Hagee, who blame AIDS on GOD and Hurricane Katrina on homosexuals and call the Catholic Church the Great Whore!
YEAH!
And we don't need any two-bit economists telling us that Hillary is lying just to get the nomination - the elitist swine! Hillary understands us! She understands that we are just as uninformed as she hopes we are, and that we'll settle for the quick fix rather than accepting the difficult truth (you know, how demand tends to drive up prices and all of that).
And you can just bet that Obama guy will have educated people in his cabinet. Why, I'll bet there won't be even one appointment to anyone with less than a college degree! Like they know anything. What does that Obama guy know, anyway? Does he play to the cameras, pretending to down shots and beers with us? Does he conveniently forget his anti-gun voting record for us? No?
HA!
Then there you have it! Who'd want to vote for a guy that clearly won't say and do anything, just to win a nomination?

You all need to get an education. Oil prices are NOT dictated by ONE PERSON. Suppy and demand - simple economics that you probably never learned. Hillary is banking on the majority being ignorant. In a global economy, buying, selling in the stock exchanges dictate oil prices. Put down your beer and get an EDUCATION.
