The State Society of Iowa is teaming up with the local alumni associations of Iowa universities to raise money to bring needed storm relief to their counterparts in "Iowa Disaster Relief 2008" on Monday, June 23 in Washington, D.C.

The combination of severe rainfall, tornados and flooding impacted 83 Iowa counties and more than 700 cities and towns, displacing over 38,000 residents from homes, businesses, hospitals and schools and leaving 17 dead.

Governor Chet Culver, Senator Chuck Grassley, Senator Tom Harkin, Congressman Tom Latham, Congressman Leonard Boswell, Congressman Steve King, Congressman Bruce Braley and Congressman David Loebsack are serving as honorary hosts for the event and area businesses will join the State Society in an active effort to secure funding to aid the 45,000 square miles affected.

Record flooding in many areas of the state shocked businesses and agriculture, leaving three million acres of corn under water and a $2.5 billion estimated loss on crops alone.

"The people of Iowa are in need of our help," said Cory Crowley, president of the Iowa State Society. "Our mission is to pull together as many businesses, politicians, community groups and other organizations as possible and signal powerful, active support for the people of Iowa."

The event will be held on the rooftop of 101 Constitution Avenue, NW from 6 to 8 p.m. The suggested contribution per person is $20 and all proceeds go toward the relief effort. For more information, contact social@iowasociety.org.
