Granite State Bound
Your Hotline On Call editor is en route to the Granite State to celebrate Mike Pride's retirement after 30 years as editor of the Concord Monitor. A one-of-a-kind journalist and mentor to many. Gruff, but loveable, Pride will continue to write for the paper. And more, of course.
Here's a snippet about Mike's plans, offered in a recent column titled, "Not Dead Yet" ...
"My writing year has been a transition into retirement - and I don't mind that word. I'll still be a writer, author and amateur historian, but I'll set my own pace and leave time to tend to other aspects of my life: to travel, canoe and hike, be a better husband and citizen, read more for pleasure, dig into archives, maybe even learn to cook. At least that's the plan."
I'll always be grateful to Mike and the good people at the Monitor. So light posts the next few days. I'll be enjoying an early summer weekend with friends in Concord.

I don't get the "canonization" of Russert. Yes, it was tragic, but it's not worthy of the news coverage it's getting. And let's be honest, he wasn't that great an interviewer either. How many times did Cheney show up on his show to spread his lies without any serious cross-examination.
Russert was part of the problem, and exemplifies this cult of personality that the mainstream media has become. I'm sick of hearing the news "brands" pushing sensationalistic opinion as fact, while there are real stories out there that need to be brought to the attention of the American publlic.
I just want news: no opinions, now shouting matches, no "he said, she said" ratings-whoring, no groomed personalities. Just the facts.
"Journalism is dead. Long live Infotainment." It's pathetic!

And Frank, what does that have to do with this post? Then again, why does Jennifer Skalka think we care about her weekend plans?

I would like to know why hasn't Clayton Powell been considered as a possible VP for Obama. He is very qualified and very respect. This is the man I feel should be considered, if he is interested.

Hey, I care about Jennifer Skalka's weekend plans, even if I'm (tragically) not part of them.
I still hope she has an excellent weekend with Mike Pride et al., and doesn't get caught up in the end-of-Bike-Week southbound traffic clustercheney.
Just because you don't know Mike Pride, John, doesn't mean that many folks across the country don't. Not every post will, or should, appeal to every single reader. Akuna matata. And happy summer.
