Hotline After Dark -- Been There, Done That

CBS' Couric sat down with Al Gore to talk about his 7/17 energy speech and WH '08.

Couric: "Senator [Barack] Obama said during the primaries season, there would be a place at the table for Al Gore, in an Obama administration."

Gore: "Well, that's a very nice thing for anybody to say ... and I appreciate it. I would not take a formal position in any administration."

Couric: "So you can't see yourself being, say, an environmental czar, helping to shape environmental policy or energy policy in a new administration?"

Gore: "Well, it's a really nice idea. I don't think that's the best way for me to serve my country. I think the real solutions to this climate crisis must involve a sea change in public opinion. So that when the American people demand solutions, the elected officials and politicians in all parties will then respond. That's what I'm trying to do."

Couric: "What about the VP slot?"

Gore: "No. ... I have many times said, you know, I have a personal term limit. Only two terms as VP.

After the jump, more Gore, Pelosi has tough words for Bush and Hannity vs. the Obamas.

Couric: "So if he called you and said, 'Al, buddy, listen. I really, really, really need you.'"

Gore: "Well, I repeat. I've imposed a personal term limit of two terms as VP."

Gore, on Obama's trip to the Middle East: "I would advise him to do what he's doing, to go and listen and learn and find out what the latest facts are. I'm impressed with his command ... of these issues, and I'm impressed that he has taken the initiative to go and see for himself and learn more" ("Evening News," 7/17).

"A TOTAL FAILURE"

Speaker Nancy Pelosi was in the "Situation Room."

Pelosi, asked if she will allow a House vote on offshore drilling: "No. I mean, the point is, is we are putting forth the alternatives that we need to put forth. And that is, drill, use it or lose it. ... I have no plans to do so."

On Pres. Bush: "God bless him, bless his heart, the President of the United States, a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject, and for him to be challenging Congress when we are trying to sweep up after his mess over and over and over again" (CNN, 7/17).

NO IMMUNITY

And FNC's Sean Hannity discussed Obama's recent interview with Glamour magazine.

Hannity: "Senator Barack Obama is defending his wife by attacking little old me, Sean Hannity. In an interview with Glamour magazine Senator Obama was asked how he felt about criticism of his wife. He responded, quote, 'It's infuriating, but it's not surprising because, let's face it, what happened was that the conservative press, FOX News, and the National Review, and columnists of every ilk, went fairly deliberately at her in a pretty systematic way, and treated her as the candidate in a way that you just rarely see the Democrats try to do against Republicans. And I've said this before, I would never have my campaign engage in a concerted effort to make Cindy McCain an issue, and I would not expect the Democratic National Committee or people who were allied with me to do this, because, essentially, spouses are civilians. They didn't sign up for this. They are supporting their spouse so it took a toll. If you start being subjected to rants by Sean Hannity and the like, day in and day out, that'll drive up your negatives.'

More: "So let's get this straight, Senator. Your wife campaigns for you, does public speeches, and says things like she's finally proud of her country, and that America is a downright mean country in 2008, and she
should be immune from criticism?" ("Hannity & Colmes," 7/17).

Gore's no fool--he knows a sinking ship when he sees one.
