Novak Hits Pedestrian ...

The Politico first reported this morning that conservative columnist Robert Novak was cited by police after hitting a pedestrian at the corner of 18th and K.

A Politico reporter saw Novak in the front of a police car with a citation in his hand; a WJLA-TV crew and reporter saw Novak as well. The pedestrian, a male in his 60s, was hospitalized at George Washington University Hospital with minor injuries according to the Metro Fire Department. Novak was later released by police and drove away from the scene.

“I didn’t know I hit him,” Novak told Politico. Novak said he was a block away from 18th and K St., NW, where the accident happened, when a bicyclist stopped him and said, "You hit someone." He said he was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

David Bono, a partner at Harkins Cunningham, was biking to work this morning when he witnessed the accident. Bono told On Call that he saw a black Corvette, top up, strike a pedestriant at the corner of 18th and K. He said the pedestrian, a man, had been in the crosswalk as he traversed the street and that the "walk" signal was displayed when he was hit.

Bono said that after being hit the pedestrian was "splayed up onto the windshield and hood." The driver then turned right onto the K Street service lane, and the body rolled left. Bono took off after the vehicle, yelling out his DC license plate -- BY9430 -- to other witnesses as he attempted to catch the car. Bono said he overtook the car just before 17th Street, on K Street. Bono said he pulled his bike in front of the car. The driver, still seated in the vehicle, asked: "What happened?"

"I said, Sir, you can't hit a pedestrian and drive away,'" Bono said he responded.

Bono said he phoned the police at 10:06 a.m. He said he recognized the driver as "a news personality" but didn't know his name.

On Call has learned that the Metro police received a call at 10:08 a.m. reporting that a pedestrian was struck by a black vehicle at 18th and K Streets, NW. Officer Helen Andrews said she's "not sure" if anyone was arrested. "We haven't received the update yet," she said.

Meanwhile, another On Call source who witnessed the aftermath forwarded these photos:

David Bono deserves a medal for chasing down the hit-and-run driver with a bike, and reporting him to law enforcement. While it might be appropriate to warn others of careless drivers, it might also be repsponsible for bringing retaliation toward a careless driver. Robert Novak's DC license plate -- BY9430 might beome the albatross aroung Robert Novak's neck that may become too heavy to bear. I hope the victim is not forgotten by the media.

Novak should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and sued for what he did. let's see if justice is in fact blind and equal in america!

I always thought Robert Novak was a first class jerk for being an unapologetic Israel basher. This incident proves the depth of his depravity.

"Unapologetic Israel-basher"????

The ability of these conservative wingnuts to turn the truth, and therefore the world, upside down just so they can avoid having to re-evaluate it in the face of overwhelming evidence that they are wrong... has now reached a new low. Bob Novak is a man who makes his living apologizing for Israeli right-wing atrocities. Try looking up the term "cognitive dissonance" for some insight into the disorder now rampaging throughout America (and Israel... of course).

Thank you Mycos. There are times when the cognitive dissonance you speak of is truly astonishing with its Orwellian lies. Like again today, for example. Obama speaks to over 100,000 cheering people in Germany, and the right spins this as somehow a bad thing. Yes that's right! God forbid any other country like us! That would mean we are .... weak! yes that's it!

But cognitive dissonance requires that the individual RECOGNIZE that something about their lies is incorrect or disingenuous. I think Republicans are born without that gene, hence the ability to lie, cheat, scam at will with no remorse. I don't think it is cognitive dissonance of Republican voters that has allowed Bush to destroy this country. I think it is a psychological characteristic that is far more sinister and dangerous.

I've always wondered about this topic, so I used The Google and found a couple of interesting links:

Notes:
The victim was 86(!) and not in his 60's. The DC police took his name wrong and his age and knew very little when they left Novak off with a $50 fine.

Also, according to the cyclist (one of several witnesses), even after he blocked Novak's ability to drive, Novak tried to leave and it took a little while for Novak to roll down the window and find out why he was stopped.

I think there is more to this story than meets the eye.

It just doesn't pass the smell test.

I don't know if anyone will read this so far after the fact, but what a bunch of pathetic comments about a guy with a brain tumor. Hey, let's get some pitchforks and torches and go after that SOB.
